I have been following the Kindle vs Nook thread but I am looking at the Sony Reader 600 (or even the 900) and the Nook. I work at a library so I want it for our Overdrive ebooks. I do not care if it has wireless or 3G because I will more than likely not be buying books. I have played around with both and I found things that I like and dislike with both readers. I just wanted to know what people thought about either one (or the 900 if anyone has it).

Thanks,
Kim

I have the Sony pocket reader and love it! I wasn't really sure about getting an ereader but DH talked me into it and I'm so glad he did. I don't think I've read a paper book since I got it.

I find the Sony very easy to use and downloads from the library are a breeze.

I did try out the Nook in the store and liked it, but I got the Sony (refurbished) on WOOT a couple of months ago for a bit over $100 (including shipping). That was the deciding factor for me.

Thanks.

I have herard the same rumors so I was holding off because I think I am leaning towards the Sony reader. I think I like it a smidge more than the Nook.

thanks,
Kim

I have the Sony pocket ereader and love it. I didn't want any of the bells and wistles. I like that I can download pretty much anything and not tied to only one site for books. I [paid $199 last Xmas but I saw it at Wal-mart for $134. I got the cover w/light at Target on sale for $35. I like the size and it does fit a pocket.

I love my Nook and the 2 things that I think made Nook superior than Sony (my opinion only of course) are:
1. The feel/look of the device - I like the sleeker look and the feel of Nook compared to Sony.
2. B&N bookstore vs. Sony - I can go to B&N brick and mortar store to get help if I need to.

Other than that I think both device has the same capability.

Sony ereader has touch screen while Nook only has touchscreen on the bottom part of the device. Some say that makes sony screen not great for reading (glare issue).

Nook however is a bit heavier (about 1.5oz heavier I think) than Sony 600

And nook is a bit thicker as well 0.1" thicker than Sony.

Sony is also a bit more friendly with pdf format. Supposedly you can read documents both landscape and portrait. But I don't have Sony so I can't say.

Some people don't like Nook's touchscreen control. I personally think it's awesome. Then again I'm not impatient to get stuff going. I can't say if Sony's touchscreen control is any better or worse.

If your purpose is strictly overdrive book reading, either one would work.
It'll depend solely on your personal preferrence of the looks, feel and reading experience on each device.

Go to Best Buy and see both devices... maybe one will capture your heart more than the other once you see it in person. :)

Good luck!

Oh and there's been rumors that next gen Nook is coming soon, but nobody could confirm whether soon means this fall or next January or who knows when. If it is this fall, you might get lucky and find first gen Nook out cheaper soon.

I have the Sony and this is one of the features.

I really don't know much about either brand but, B&N had an educator event yesterday, there was an employee giving a mini seminar on the nook. He was very informative and talked about nook study a great feature for students. I think the new technology that they are getting ready to release is color. Meaning if you are looking at a science text or some other book that might have pictures it will come in color rather than just B & W. That's what the employee eluded to when asked about upgrades and what not. I guess I am old fashioned, but I still love the feel (and smell :rotfl:)of printed books. Not saying I would never get an ereader I really think they are a neat piece of technology.

That's the way I felt, until I got my e-reader. I've only read a handful of paperback since I got mine (@6). Conversely I've read over 450 books on my Nook. :rolleyes1 The only reason I've read printed books is either I'm at the beach (I just don't like the idea of my expensive electronic and sand and salt water) or it's a loaner from my Mom.
