I am thinking about getting DS one of these for christmas. He is 11 and is a special needs child. He can read, but he is not grade level in his reading so he can not read the books that he would like to on his own. I had heard that there are audio books that you can purchase that would be great for him. I know nothing about either the nook or the kindle. I would love to have some feedback on pros and cons of both of them so I could see which one would be best for him. :goodvibes

I'm not very familiar with the Nook. I played with it a little at Barnes and Noble.
I have a Kindle though and I love it ! I love how easy it is to use and order books!

If you are speaking of the Text To Speech function, only the Kindle has that. Well, a few other brands do also but not the nook. This is where you basically see the words on the page and a computer generated voice reads to you.

The nook color does have some interactive read aloud books, but those are mostly pre-school level.

If your son wanted to read colorized books such as picture books, magazines, or comics...then a tablet (the nook color, the new Kindle that is about to be announced, another Android tablet, or an iPAD) would be the best choice.

I love my nook, but it doesn't have an audio function...the new ones might. One think I love about the nook is that you can use library books on it. You can't do that with the kindle...and books get expensive after a while. Look for an ereader that you can use with library books.

For what it's worth, the local library likely has audio books for the computer...you might check and see.

Starting this year you will be able to borrow books from the Library on Kindle also and lend books to friends :) My daughter and I both have Kindles and love them!!

Actually library funtion is coming to the Kindle. In fact a small number of libraries already have it and are doing Beta testing right now.

The library lending on the kindle is also wireless so you do not have to attach it to the computer and side load like you do with the Nook, Sony or Kobo.

I love my Nook which is the previous version not the new touch screen. However if your looking for the text to speak then the Kindle is the way to go. Theres not a huge difference in the e-books you can easily download books, share books with friends, read books, and have access to many free books as well as library books on either the nook or the kindle. The color nook has more options but again for the text to speech it does not have. The color nook does however have a Read to Me feature that is only available with limited children books. =)

I have the Nook Color and I :lovestruc it! You can download audio books into it and since you can access the web it has a Pandora app.
