DH bought me a Kindle for my B-day. I read a ton of books, so he thought I would really like it. I was batting the idea around about trying out an e-reader, so I am thrilled with the gift. It is currently on backorder, and I expect to get it within a week or so. I'm just wondering how other Kindle users like theirs, and if there is anything I need to know or should know about using it!

I have the earlier version of the Kindle and LOVE it!

The newer version that you have is supposed to be even better! Did your husband order a case for you? Also, will you be getting the wifi or wifi+3g version? For the newer Kindles, there aren't many 3rd party cases available yet, but Amazon does have their own version and some have integrated lights. The reviews on those are very good.

There a ton of information available on kindleboards which is a message board for Kindle owners and I've found all of my anwers there.

For me, I find myself spending even more time reading since I purchased the Kindle. I simply don't get as tired and love that I can adjust the font size when I desire. There are also a TON of free boks on Amazon along with other websites like Smashwords. You can find more information about these freebies on kindleboards.

Good luck! I hope you enjoy your Kindle as much as I enjoy mine!

ah, he got you the new Kindle 3. I absolutely love mine and in my current opinion it is the best 6" reader available right now.

Things to know, you can start looking around for books right now and one clicking. Log into the Amazon account where the Kindle is registered and if you see a book you like you should be able to go ahead and buy it. When your Kindle arrives you'll be able to charge it up and all your books will be there.

This is one of my favorite blogs that lists free books and low cost deals.

You never know what will go on special. The publishers are in a trend right now where if a major author has a new release one or two books from the backlist will go on sale real cheap - like $1.50 to $3 or so. Faye Kellerman and Jenny Crusie both have specials like that currently.

I love my kindle, older version. I purchase (more like download) many of the free books per week. Then I don't feel bad if I don't like it or decide not to read it. I purchased my cover through Etsy and was able to customize it, so it is a Mickey Mouse cover.

They also recently released a few word games, and I downloaded the scrabble-like one. Very addicting, but helps pass the time when I am waiting on the kids.

Enjoy your new toy! And Happy Birthday.

THANKS RITAE! I just bought Jennifer Crusie's Bet Me for $2.99. :goodvibes

Bet Me is one of my favorite books of hers but her new release Maybe This Time is awesome! I tore through it last week. She is one of my favorite writers and I adore that the women in her novels aren't all 28 years old and unbelievably thin and gorgeous.

I'm toying with the idea of getting one for my dh for his bday or Christmas. Can anyone tell me how the selection is for sci fi/fantasy books? Is there much variety? How often are books made available to read?

Our house is overwelmed with books. (Not just him.. I'm guilty too!) Consolodating into a Kindle or a Nook just seems like a good fit for us. My main drawback is wondering how the selection is. We both tend to like obscure reads.

Also is there a benefit for getting a Kindle over a Nook or vice versa?

Desiree - I'd suggest you head over to mobileread.com and look at their Which One should I Buy forum for help in making that decision.

Barnes and Noble centers much of the nook marketing around in store promotions and Adobe ePub capabilities (ie the library book downloads you read about). Amazon concentrates right now on low prices and the largest catalog of available books. Amazon has the new K3 just released. Barnes and Noble is rumored to have a nook 2 lined up for release soon but I can't say if it will be before year end.

I'm not a huge SciFi Fantasy reader but I do know that there is an extensive catalogue of SciFi books available digitally, as in more than probably any other genre.

Baen Books seems to be a favorite. DRM free (which makes them readable on any brand) and low prices.

Desiree, I know alot of people with Nooks and Kindles. I have a nook. You can go into Target and hold the Kindle and also go into Barnes and Noble and try out the Nook. I chose the Nook and I am very happy. I have over 130 books on it and I have spent $1.05. I think that you will need to see which one works for you. Its nice you can go into a store and hold it and get a feel for it first.

Very good. Thanks ladies! Off to go read the forums. (And that's a good idea about going to those places to check them out.)

I adore my older kindle. I'm a big reader so it's been really nice.

One of my sisters got the new one for her birthday. Her DH took it and has been using it so she's getting another one for her. I'd say that means they love it too.

I am a huge reader. My DH was going to get me the Kindle for Christmas but wasn't sure if I would like it. Most books I get are passed on to me and I read them and pass them on.

I just think I would miss the feel of the book in my hand and not sure I would like it. Did it take awhile to get use to and do you enjoy reading books this way?

KadysMom - Did you pay a total of $1.05 for the 130 books and how did you do that!

I have the older version, and I LOVE it. I can't begin to say how nice it is to go on vacations and not have to lug 3 or 4 books with me. It is AWESOME. I have read so many more different authors because they have such good specials on books. I also have gotten numerous free books, which is awesome. :thumbsup2

What sold me on the Nook was that there wont be a new version (the kindle has had quite a few changes) all the changes are done through software with the nook so no need to ever buy a new one...whereas with the kindle for some upgrades you must buy a whole new one.

But really both are great and save you alot of money with the free books!

I just love my Kindle. Besides the links posted here, I also "friended" on Facebook the Free Books on Kindle group and I get notifications when interesting free books come out.

I really am not sure what you are referring to there. Both the Kindle and the nook release firmware updates (what you call software). The upgrades for the Kindle that require you to purchase the new model are things that are beyond firmware - ie moving from domestic to International coverage or getting the new Pearl Screen. Those are hardware issues and to get the newest hardware you have to buy the newest hardware.

You don't have to buy a new Kindle or buy a new nook. Both work until they die. However there is going to be a nook 2 sometime ... soon-ish and I assume it will have upgrades, most likely the new Pearl screen. It cleared FCC approval last month.

I bought one book for $0.99 plus tax and thats it... I get free books from Barnes and Noble each week. I download from the library and alot of books are lendable on your Nook, so I go on a page we have on facebook and everyone posts their lendable books. You just request it and they send it to you. I LOVE my nook!!!

As far as missing a book in my hand....NOPE! Another reason I picked the nook was for the weight. I bought a cover and it opens like a book, and the weight is comparable. I dont miss a "real" book at all!!

As far as missing a book in your hand, I have a funny story there. I usually read either at work or in bed. In bed, I've learned a very valuable lesson.... not to read hardcover books. Because when I fall asleep reading the book lands squarely in my face resulting in a nice little bruise. Ahh, good times explaining those black eyes to people! :rotfl:
