My Nook has a crack! I haven't even had it for a year (I've only had it 8 months) and have only read 3-4 books on it (still reading through all the "real" books that I've collected!).

So, I'm going to be sending it back. I know I'll be getting a refurbished Nook to replace mine (which is fine) - will it be one of the old ones or the newer one??

This happened to me twice. The replacement process was easy. They will send you an exact replacement of the Nook that you currently have.

On the budget side wait until they send you the new one before sending back your old one that way you can use their packaging to send it back because they do specify that the Nook must be in good condition other than the cause for the return.

That happened to my friend recently (about a week and half ago). She had the warranty and we took it to the store (B and N) and they replaced it on the spot. EASY PEASY :thumbsup2

This happened to me about a month ago also. I agree that the return process was super easy. I had purchased a refurb that was under warranty so I was completely fine with getting another refurb. Just call their customer support number. They were super nice and fast and the exchange was easy!

Yep, this happened to me as well. Now I use the touchscreen to turn the pages whenever possible, rather than hitting the side buttons... and when I have to use the buttons, I try to hit them in the center rather than the edge. Luckily mine was still under warranty for another week or so, so no charge on my side. They do threaten to charge the new nook to your cc though if you don't get it sent in during their allotted time, so make sure that the person you speak with knows you'll be holding onto your old nook until the new one arrives.

You guys have got to be kidding....

This thread makes me VERY glad I didn't go Nook. I have a Kindle that's endured heavy use, lots of flights, tossed into purses, briefcases you name and it looks as good as new and works as good as new.

I am amazed at the "it happened to me too" threads on the Nook!

I'm glad B&N is getting better about their returns. I had a friend who had this happen and the CS rep gave her a hard time. He said it wouldn't have happened if she had used the touch screen to turn the pages like she should have been doing :headache:

Well... one of my co-workers cracked the screen of her Kindle by accidentally clutching it a little too tightly (was distracted by the Chihuahua in her other hand). Maybe hers was an isolated incident, but my guess is that both products have their weak points?

Personally I love my first-generation nook, even though it can be a little fragile. :)

I've read just as many horror stories about Kindles. I don't think its a specific device that has more problems.

Like many others, I also had this happen. BN customer service couldn't have been easier. I also waited to receive my new one before shipping back the old so that I'd still have a Nook while waiting and so that I'd have the box they send for shipping mine back. Very easy!

When you ask if they'll send you a new model, do you mean will you get an upgrade from a standard Nook to a colour? I wouldn't expect anything like that to happen. You'll get the same model you've got now.

One thing I want to point out that surprised me. When you register the new Nook, you will get downloads of all of your BN books, but not only will there be no shelves, but you won't get the full book auto downloading. All that will download is the cover and info about the book. If you want to read the book, you have to manually download each one. It's free obviously since you've already bought the book but it is an extra step that I hadn't expected. Any new books you buy will auto download but any you already have need to be manually downloaded. Just an FYI.

Actually what amazes me about this is I heard the rep dealing with a customer with an issue at BN a few weeks ago.

According to him these things are perfect and industrictible so the guy just got the "one bad unit' REALLY? Based on this it looks like there is a design defect. If ALL of them are having the same issue then BN needs to redesign not just "replace" LOL!

My Kindle is several years old and so far not one issue. I am happy. If I had one that was this new and things like this had happened I am sure I would not be happy, especially since it looks like this is a known defect.

Considering the OP asked about the Nook, then people will respond about the Nook. If people asked about Kindle issues, I am sure people would post about those.

In fact, I know 2 people who have had issues with their Kindles and have had to have them replaced. One got so frustrated that she bought a Nook to replace her Kindle after multiple rounds of issues. She has yet to have an problem with her Nook.

I had this happen & BN CS was a nightmare!!!! 3 months to get it replaced. Mine was purchased from Best Buy not BN directly & apparently that cause a problem in their "system" that they were not willing to fix. The knew it was under warranty, knew it was broken & yet refused to honor the warranty. I filed with the BBB & finally got it replaced. I'm buying a kindle soon. Fed up with BN.

Thank you all for your replies! Since I purchased directly from BN, I'm not anticipating issues.

(Oh, and I know I won't be upgraded to the Color Nook - I was just wondering if I would be getting one of the newer black and white Nooks - they're a bit different from what I bought last year! I'm glad to be getting it replaced at all!) :goodvibes

I DID just get a replacement upgrade from a Nook 3G to a Nook color. I bought my 3G at Best Buy last spring, it had some lines come on the screen so I took it in on Thursday (at BB) to get repaired. I had the extended warranty and they don't repair the Nooks, they just replace.

Well, apparently the 3 G is discontinued and the next closest "comparable" was the color, so they gave me that one in exchange! I did have to buy a new service plan for it ($60), but that wasn't an issue for me.

Best Buy gave me the choice of a credit for the difference between the 3G and a WiFi nook (about $140 difference), or an exchange for the color, since it was the closest price point. I wanted the device, so I took the color (which I LOVE, btw!). :woohoo:

BTW, the color isn't 3G either, apparently they discontinued 3 G all together, but I'm not concerned about that, I have enough on my Nook to keep me occupied when I am out of WiFi range.

This exact thing happened to my nook, too. I had purchased a refurbished one and was SHOCKED when they initially insisted "my" nook was out of warranty based on the original purchase date, Not MY purchase date of the refurbished nook. grief. Eventually it was straightened out and I got a 'new' refurbished nook, one without a cracked page turner... I no longer turn pages with the page turner button.

jme, you were dealing with Best Buy's warranty, not BN's.

I'm surprised to hear people's experieces with BN and refurbs as well as nooks purchased elsewhere. I bought mine from Overstock I think in November when the 3G ones were down below $100 and I had no problem at all. My registration date is what showed as my start date for my warranty and they had no problem with the fact that it was purchased elsewhere. Our experience was super easy. Weird how different Customer Service reps handle things so differently. My CS agent told me that my warranty restarted for my replacement nook from the day I registered the new one. Hopefully I won't have to find out.

Kindles can break just as well. My sister took hers to the Dominic Republic last weeks and it looks like the whole inside shattered. She called amazon and they send a new one overnight.

She actually is not a fan of the kindle and wants the nook color like I have but the kindle was a gift.

WOW, that's bizarre! It is interesting how different CSRs have different answers. I asked the one who helped me why this was happening to multiple people. According to him, when they were first created, this was a design defect. Again according to him (my disclaimer, LOL), they strengthened that part of the cover so the newer first-generation nooks should not have an issue. Who knows if that is true or not; I don't plan to find out... will continue using the color touchpad to turn pages from now on.
