I know there are a lot of Nook fans on this board so I was hoping somebody could answer my questions...We are considering getting my DSD a Nook for christmas...here are my questions...

1. Since she is not at our house full time would it be possible to have 2 accounts on the Nook. One for her to use and one that my husband or I could use when she was not here or if she gets bored with it and ends up not using it.

2. Do we need to use a credit card to create her account or could we just use gift cards.

3. If her mom got her a nook at her house could she access her account on both nooks? We would not be letting her take the Nook home because she tends to be forgetful...ie: we would spend $150 on this gift and it would get lost at her Mom's house and never make its way back here. This is where the credit card question comes in play also...I would not want her to have access to our credit card at her mother's house. She is going to be 12 years old but I do not feel that she would be responsible enough to have full access to ordering books on my credit card without my help. But it would be nice if she could start a book here and still read it when she is at her Mom's house.

4. If you have an account can you access it on your Nook and your Ipod touch or can it only be used on one...just wondering if she could start a book on her Nook and finish it on her Ipod touch.

Thanks in advanced for any help!!:goodvibes

There is a way to have two accounts on the nook but I think you would find it a PITA. You would have to have two e-mail accounts set up with B&N. You would then have to authorize and un-authorize your Nook each time she was using the Nook or You were using the Nook. It takes about 5-10 minutes each time to do this (I've had to do this to change my e-mail address and I did the process in the wrong order :headache:).

I couldn't set up my account without a CC but you could double check this with B&N. You can have up to 3 GC at a time on an account.

It's my understanding that you can have two nooks on the same account. I did it when I had to have my Nook replaced.

Can't help with the ipod touch but I have books from my B&N account on both my PC and my Nook and can access both at the same time.

As far as I know, you have to have a credit card registered on your account at B&N for the nook to work. I then place gift cards on the account for purchases.

You can use the account with multiple nooks, Driods, PC's or any device they have the nook software for. All the devices will have access to buy books on your account though.

Yes you need a credit card on file to even download the free books. Make sure you check out if you library has free e-book downloads(one the great bonuses of the Nook!)

Personally though I woiuldn't be giving a gift that I would make her keep at your house (does she come often?) I would be afraid that she would be in the middle of reading a book- then have to leave it and would then lose interest in it.

I was older when my parents divorced- but my sisiter was still little. She still talks about the Christmas she "got" a video game system that stayed at my Dad's. She only was going there once a month. I am of the if you give someone a present give them the present camp. If you don't think she is responsible enough for the nook get her something else.

Sorry, I really don't know the full answers to your questions either and I don't have a nook here to test.

I know that you have to have a credit card on file to buy books for the nook from Barnes and Noble because the DRM scheme the nook utilizes requires a credit card number to key the book.

BUT --
The nook can read books bought from a few other places however where a credit card may not always be required. The library Overdrive system is a good example of this, although you aren't technically buying your books from there.

What I don't know is if you download the books you want to the nook and then remove the credit card from you Barnes Account or even deregister the nook at that point, are the books already downloaded still readable? I suspect the answer is yes. The Kindle offers a similar method as a anemic parental control.

I have a Barnes and Noble App for my iPhone, but that has a 3G connection. I don't know if the APP will work on the WiFi iTouch or not. If nobody else knows I can grab one of this kid's later today and try for you.

Yep, she is at our house often...she splits her time about 60/40. Our houses are one mile apart so she is able to be at either house without much effort. I understand what you are saying but to tell you the truth she is used to having what is at our house stay here and vice versa for her mother's house. She is an avid reader and has no problem picking up where she left off on books. She even feels more comfortable about this because she is afraid of losing things. Sometimes she goes right from our house to school and often times I pick her up directly from school...bringing a nook to 6th is frowned upon in our school district...I would also be afraid that somebody could steal it from her book bag. I also would not feel comfortable to her having access to our credit card at her mother's house.

As far as you saying do not get her a nook if I do not think she is responsible enough...let's put it this way...I have an ipad...but I do not take it out of the house because I am worried about losing it or somebody stealing it. It is just something I enjoy in the house so I do not think it is a big deal to get her something that she can enjoy when she is in our house.

And finally, her mom is thinking about getting her one also...that is why I am trying to work this out in advance. There will most likely be one at each house...just trying to figure out the logistics.

you did need a credit card to set up the account but once you do and add a gift card you can remove the credit card. I had to remove the cc because it only lets you add so many cards/gift cards and I had three..

the one way to get around it though is to get her a prepaid visa card.

My DH works for B&N so thought I'd answer your questions....

1. You can link up to 6 accounts with multiple devices, but it is designed to have just one account on a Nook, so that would be a pain. However I think you mentioned you had an iPad, you can download a free app that will allow you to read all of your Nook stuff if she was using it at the time. That also goes for the ipod touch, yes, she can access her books there.

2. You must use a credit card to set up the account, but there are ways to put controls so she can't just spend money on it, and it can be loaded with gift card money as well.

3. Like I said, up to 6 on one account, so having two Nooks is not an issue at all.

4. And also answered, just download the app and you are good to go on other devices :)

Thanks for those answers. Very good to have that information on the credit card...I do not mind linking the account to a cc...I just do not want her to accidentally purchase books on the cc.

I am still confused about accessing different accounts on the Nook. Somebody else who had a nook told me that her and her DH shared it but they each had different accounts so they would log on and off on the same nook...is that not possible? If it is possible does it take forever?

It is just not set up to work that way, it is possible, but would mean unregistering and reregistering the device every time, it's not like different users on a computer or something. It would take several minutes to do that, and I definitely would not recommend that. It would be much better to just share an account if you plan on having only one Nook, but the good thing is if she has one for each home, it is simple to link accounts and share the books between accounts on each nook.
