Nook color or Kindle 2?

Ok.

Both my daughters have a Nook Color and boot times seem lightning quick.

I have messed with both of them since Christmas and I did not have any issue with the touch screen and they haven't complained about it either. It works just like my Droid X.

Magazines look great on the Nook Color!

We are very happy with them.

I heard in one early review that it took nearly 2 min to boot up when turned on, that its touchscrean was not very responsive and "page truning" slower than kindle. Sounds like some of these problems have improved. Maybe review was just before launch.

Thanks for all the great replies this is really helping!

I have not experienced any of these problems with my Nook (not a color Nook).

ETA: Your best bet is go "play" with all of them. That's what I did. I swear it took me about a month to finally decide on the Nook. I went to Best Buy and they had the Nook, Kindle, the Sony reader and one other and I played with them all. Then I went to B&N and looked at the color, encountered a very knowledgeable gal at B&N and spent about an hour with her asking questions, etc. I finally chose the Nook solely because of the library access. I didn't want the color because of the battery life, the back lit screen and I'm won't read mags, newspapers or play with apps so it just had too many things I wouldn't use. Let your DD go play with them and make the best decision for her :)

Have the nook color and love it! Love the apps and the backlit screen for reading. It is definitely not slow, faster than my "smart" phone is in many aspects. I have only free books on it--over a 100 now. Still haven't accessed library books yet--on my list to do this weekend.

I agree to have her go and play with the different readers before buying.

Kindle!

The backlit screen is basically no different than staring at a computer screen- eye strain. Also I would worry about glare on the screen if you take it out in the sun. The kindle can be read perfectly in directly sunlight with no glare at all.

Haven't read the whole thread but here's my take:

Just got a Nook for Christmas and love it. I go onto Live-brary.com and rent books and it's so easy to transfer them. I've also bought books on b&n website and they download within a minute or two and there are forums for book lending which you can't do with Kindle. A friend of mine bought the Kindle and she keeps spending $$ on books because she can't borrow them from the library or other users. As for the backlight, if she's an avid reader, I've been told that the color Nook uses a light which can strain your eyes after a while. It's better to get the b/w version so you can read longer. If you're reading at night, they sell cool clip lights for the device.

I have a Kindle and my SIL has the Nook Color. We traded devices to read a book we were interested in and to see the differences. For straight up book reading, I prefer the Kindle. I feel like I am holding a book and it is way less eye strain. My SIL even commented on how well her eyes adjusted to the Kindle screen. I never read in the dark so I don't need it to light up. If you are a magazine reader, the Nook Color would be the way to go.

I'm 90 pect sure she will get the Nook but didn't realize all three were at Best Buy so we will check them out!

One word of caution about the Nook color. My BF and I got it for his 10 year old son for Christmas. We did not research it enough because as great as it is, there are no parental controls on the web browser.

So....guess what the 10 year old was looking at??? I'm not sure if a daughter would be an issue with this though. In hindsight, we would have not bought this if we had better informed ourselves.

(He's been warned and was thoroughly embarrassed but there is still no way to control it except he only uses it in front of us now.)

Other than that, it's been great.

Sure there is a way to control it. Secure your wireless network and don't let him have the access code. That way, he can read to his heart's content, but not surf. There are also ways to block objectionable sites at the network level, but that's more complicated.

Oooh the is really good to know!

My DD knows" everything" and tells me whenever there is anything remotely questionable. I am blessed to have a very candid relationship with her right now :). She knows that in the future if that changes or we feel she is not quite herself we reserve the right to go through any and all electronic devises and her DF has capasity to find "deleted items ".

This should not be an issue but will warrent a discussion.

Thanks!

He's already figured out how to tap into unsecured wireless networks on the Nook and his computer.

Perhaps you should clue in the owners of those networks that they are being sniffed.

How do go about finding out who the owner is? I would love to let them know so they could secure their network.

While it's true that you can't get library books on the Kindle, it now has the same lending feature as the Nook does and there are several forums where people arrange to lend or borrow. There are also many free books available through Amazon and several other (legal) sites.

If library books are important, then the Kindle is not an option right now and the Nook or Nook Color would be the better choice. Personally, I prefer the Kindle. The Nook Color is neat but frankly if I was considering it I'd wait and see if the price of the iPad drops when the iPad 2 is announced soon (rumored to be sometime in February), since for most people (who don't want to get into rooting the Nook) the iPad is a superior device and will work with both Nook and Kindle apps.

Heck, if you want something like that, wait for the Samsung Galaxy Tablet to come down in price a bit.

The most hotly awaited Android tablet is the Samsung Galaxy Tab, a sleek, sturdy slab, 7.5 by 4.7 by 0.5 inches. The glass front is a 7-inch multitouch screen; the back is off-white plastic.

Samsung sweated the details on this thing. The screen is gorgeous. The touch response is immediate and reliable. The whole thing is superfast and a pleasure to use.

...

But the Galaxy doesn’t feel like a cramped iPad. It feels like an extra-spacious Android phone. And the payoff is huge. The Galaxy is much lighter than the iPad (13 ounces vs. 1.5 pounds), which makes a huge difference when you have to hold it to watch a movie on the plane. And it’s so small you can carry it in a blazer pocket.

You can even slip it into a jeans pocket, although you might walk around looking as if you have a pulled muscle or something. The Galaxy is almost exactly the size of the latest Amazon Kindle — and it makes a great e-book reader, thanks to the Kindle or the Barnes & Noble apps that let you read those companies’ e-books.

The feature list on this thing is eye-popping. This, of course, is the classic Apple-versus-Google “proprietary versus open” argument. Apple controls the hardware, the software and the app store, so everything is consistent, high quality and clean (meaning, among other things, no pornography apps). Google doesn’t monitor what goes into its app store, so the Android ecosystem is unlimited, chaotic and more confusing.

In any case, the Galaxy offers all of Android’s traditional high points, including many features the iPad doesn't have, or doesn't have out of the box. ...
