My DD 12 is an avid reader and looking at buying the Nook color. Is this a good choice? I can always count on my Dis friends to give me great feedback.

Thanks in advance for your help!

The main difference between Nook and Kindle is that you can get free library books from Nook but you cannot from Kindle. The Nook color is backlit so you don't need a auxiliary light to use the Nook in dark situations. The Nook color you can read magazines and books with pictures in full color. Otherwise they both have free books from their respective websites, have exclusive contracts with some publishers, etc. I use both the Nook and Kindle on my phone and prefer how the Nook "works" better then the Kindle but the differences are very minor.

How is the Nook for responce time? I have read some reports that it is painfully slow.

I received a Nook Color for Christmas and Love It, Love It, Love It.

There is nothing slow about it and I'm really pleased with the number of free books (Free book Friday!) and .99c books.

No regrets.

Response time for what? I haven't noticed that either Nook or Kindle is faster/slower then the other.

I got a Nook (3G Wifi) for Christmas and love it. I didn't go w/the the color because I didn't want a backlit device and I'm not an "apps" user, but the big seller for me is that the Nook color battery life is terrible. 8 hours I believe where with my regular Nook, I can last for 2 weeks or more (so long as the Wifi is off if I'm not using that feature). I have close to 60 books on my Nook and all but 2 were free. The two I paid for were .99 cent deals :)

I have a Kindle and love it. Plenty of free/cheap downloads and free samples. When fully charged will last about a month. It was only $139. Light and easy to hold.:thumbsup2

I'd go with the Kindle.

No, mine is super fast. I love mine, but I know nothing about the kindle. I really knew nothing about these, but I love to read and my dh bought me one for Christmas, and I love it. I can use the internet if need be, and there are a good bit of free books available.

Dh is in Houston right now and picked me up a Nook Color. There are a few issues of being Canadian and using the B&N website. However a simple google and I quickly found the solution. Dh comes home tomorrow.....woot and am looking forward to a e-reader finally!

I would definitely go with the Kindle over the Nook Color, for an "avid" reader. The e-ink technology causes far less eye-strain that a backlit screen.

I agree with this totally! I love to read, but reading on lit screens hurts after about 30mins to an hour, I have had no problems reading on my Kindle and you can get plenty of free books for the Kindle too. And you can do web browsing but it's not as good for that as the nook, but for google searches it's great! Another thing, if you read outside the Kindle is better, there is no glare on the screen! also the Kindle store downloads books to your kindle amazingly fast!
I've read more books since December then i've been able to read all year!

I agree with the folks talking about the backlit screen on the color, though the regular Nook is also e-ink, and is great for reading in sunshine, etc.

It's all about personal preference. I am an avid reader. Mainly I read in bed at night with my standard Nook. I have to use a book light and it is driving me nuts! When I'm not reading, I'm on my laptop(with backlit screen), usually in the dark and I have no eye strain problems from that. I wish that Nook Color was available when I bought my Nook. I would have picked that for sure.

Both my daughter and I have kindles. Hers is the older one and I have the kindle 2. We both love them. I don't like the back lit screen on the nook color. We both read in bed and have no issues with that and don't use a book light. There are thousands of free and low cost books on Amazon.

I have both the Nook and the NookColor. I love the e-ink feature of the Nook, and thought I would not enjoy reading on my color as much. So not true. It doesn't bother me at all!

As far as speed, my NookColor is faster than my netbook and my phone. :lmao: I can get on the internet in seconds. Love that feature!

I find that the response time on my NookColor is fine; what is problematic is the touch sensitivity of the screen. Lots of time a "double-click" doesn't take right away or has to be redone to get a response. The screen size is an issue, too, especially when reading email, because the zoom controls are right in the same spot on the screen as the next page controls; the device sometimes toggles them almost randomly. I did buy a capacitive stylus, and that has helped a bit.

Reading with the backlight isn't a problem; I can do it for hours. It has a very wide range of adjustments available for the background color and contrast level, so I've been able to find settings that are easy on my eyes.

PS: I should note that the screen is perfectly responsive in "page-turning" mode; that isn't a problem at all. The issue is with web-browsing. It's a known issue that the screen sensitivity is a bit bad in the corners, and naturally that's where the software has placed most of the browser screen control "buttons".

Painfully slow in what respect?

I heard in one early review that it took nearly 2 min to boot up when turned on, that its touchscrean was not very responsive and "page truning" slower than kindle. Sounds like some of these problems have improved. Maybe review was just before launch.

Thanks for all the great replies this is really helping!
