I have decided I want to get an ereader, then thinking budget minded, I think a tablet of some kind would be a better deal, and would eliminate having to take the ereader and the laptop when we travel. My question is, which to get. Does the nook color offer enough web capabilities to be able to check email/facebook/news and most importantly the dis? or should I spend a little more and get and ipad or other tablet?

yes, I do all of the above on my nook color. I can view files also. All At a much cheaper price that the ipad (Sure I would love to have one some day but I dont love the price:lmao:)

I dis from my nook all of the time

I agree. I was pushing for a pad (not ipad, the one from Verizon, much cheaper and supposedly better!) but recently got a nook color (it was a replacement for a broken 3G nook). For facebook, email and dis, it works just fine. you can load apps, pandora, add pics and your own music, watch videos and the color is awesome! The only thing you may not like is that it is not 3G so you have to have a wifi connection to access the web.

So for me the Nook is a perfectly acceptable alternative (for now..lol)!

I use my Nook Color for everything you asked about as well and I love it! I really bought it primarily for reading, but it's great for web browsing as well. As much as I would have liked an iPad, it wasn't in the budget and I really wanted something smaller to fit in my purse.

I have been looking at the Color Nooks also. I have a question that may be dumb to some but keep in mind that I am technologically challenged. I do not have WiFi at home so if I got the Color Nook, I presume I would need to go somewhere that his WiFi to download books, as well as to access the internet. Is that correct?

That is correct DJT. Or get a wireless router for your home computer

If you will use the device primarily as an e-reader, get a Nook or Kindle. If you want to use your device to watch movies, cruise the internet, etc. as well, an iPad is well worth the money.

Well - I have CM7 installed on a micro SD card and that's what I use to run our nook. It can do pretty much everything ... Netflix, all the stuff you mentioned, movies etc etc. I can also get all the apps from the Android Marketplace and even the Amazon App store. (not possible if you leave it just as Barnes and Noble sells it).

It is not nearly as nice as my son's iPAD though. My kids really do use their iPADs as near computer replacements. They even have a transportable keyboard.

The too biggest advantages of the nook color are the size (much better for fitting in a bag) and the price. Right now if you fiddle around a bit and root it or dual boot, it is about the best Android tablet you can buy for that price.
