I have been trying to get books on my Nook. Our library is constantly out of all the current books, in fact it is usually out out of most popular authors all the time, with over 10 eople on waitlists for them.
Any ideas on where I can get free current books?:confused3

I would not worry too much about the free ones.

If you are interested in science fiction, go over to www.baen.com as Baen has several free books.

But I found a book called 500 Science Fiction Stories on B&N. It was $2.99. I am finally on page 6,000 of almost 14,000 pages. I recognized some of the stories from years past. I have also recognized most of the authors. They vary from short-shorts of ten or fewer pages, to short novels of over 100 pages. And I've only skipped about three or four stories that I started and could not stand.

Legally, the library is going to be the only place you can get those books for free. There are plenty of free and inexpensive books in the B&N Nook store.

Most free ebooks are either out of copyright classics or self-published slush pile crap. There are occasionally books worth reading, but you won't find bestsellers or your favorite authors for the most part.

Sometimes you can get cards for other libraries that have better ebook selections. In my area, there are some towns that will allow you to have one for free, but in others you may have to pay a small fee, and it will let you use their ebook collection. Call around to the bigger libraries.

I'm a librarian, so I do recommend just getting on the waiting list for the books at your local library (those waiting lists come up faster than you anticipate since not all the 10 people on it will actually borrow the book) ... however, in addition, there's several website where you can trade e-books with other people for free from your own library.

Ebookfling is one such site, you get one "credit" for every time somebody borrows one of your titles, and every time you borrow another person's title you use one credit. I've got a few credits I need to use atm that I picked up for filling out a survey, etc ... they also post extra credits on their facebook page.

I am thinking I may be better to
just puchase what I'd like. I keep picking books, I don't really want to read, because that's all that is left.

Why not put yourself on the waitlist for books you're interested in? Read them as they become available. It's pretty doubtful that they'll all become available at the same time so you'll have something from the library to read most of the time.

I would also recommend "liking" Nook on Facebook if you have an account. Barnes & Noble has a free book every Friday. When you click the link, there's always a post below that lists other new free books that are available. I've gotten plenty of good books for free this way from B&N. Between this and books that come up at the library, you shouldn't have to buy books unless you go through a book a day or are very particular about genres (I'll read and enjoy almost anything).
