Non Surge Protector?

Surge protectors aren’t the only issue— DCL prohibits all of the following.
  • Extension cords, power strips, multi-plugs and surge protectors
Some people have had success bringing multi plugs, others have been confiscated—sometimes people have reported the same multiplug was allowed one cruise and confiscated the next one, so it could just be a matter of who is inspecting luggage on a given day or whether it escapes notice. The general rule of thumb seems to be if it only has USB or USB-C outlets it is ok, but if it also has 3-prong outlets that may or may not be ok.

I have used this on 9 cruises, DCL, MSC, and NCL, since 2021, with no problems.

Seems comparable. And this one has overload protection - don’t know if that would create the same unwanted effect as a “surge” protector (or just semantics for the same thing).

This has been our experience as well. We just travel with a USB tower now and use that. We haven't found a big need for actual extra plugs anymore as most of our devices are USB anyways

Yes, that's why I got an inexpensive one. Fingers crossed, but if they take it, I'll have a back up of USB-only chargers.

If they take it you get it back at the end of the cruise. I have had the best luck with USB only hubs (13 DCL sailings with one and no issues yet)

USB only hubs = OK. Anything with a traditional power outlet = prohibited. Whether some have "gone through" or not, is irrelevant... it's called luck... and DCL third party screeners being consistently inconsistent. And it is no longer just DCL, RCCL recently announced changes to their "power cord" policy as in... any extension cord or power strips are now banned. My simple rule... if something is marketed on Amazon as "cruise approved"... then it's not... and I say that half jokingly

know this is old but have had a A multiport charger with normal plugs the fall of 2023 and again on the late Spring of 2024 and i had no issue and asked specifically when embarking the ship. if this was ok and said yes. it is so confusing (2024)

So while going through the scanners while getting on ship we had 2 of these and was told it is ok and not prohibited by 2 staff.
(one ask the in charge at the time) this is so confusing

Where you able to buy an equivalent onboard?
We didn’t look into it. Do they sell electronics on the ship? We’ve brought it on 2 other cruises, one DCL. I think we just got unlucky. You could just try to bring it. When we went to pick it up after the cruise, they had hundreds in a variety of bins. They couldn’t have all been from our cruise.

It’s understandable that they might object to all multiple full voltage outlets, to limit the number of things plugged in.

But it’s real annoying if they take something like the Epicka travel adapter (and similar), which only has one AC outlet in addition to several USB outlets.

We’ve always brought a multi-plug that has USB slots as well with no issues but with all the uncertainty recently, we switched to a USB tower instead. As another poster mentioned, almost everything we need to plug in uses a USB anyway so we didn’t really notice the change. Our DD was taking a class during our last cruise so had her laptop, but the few plugs around the cabin were still enough for her to plug her laptop in and keep the tower plugged in at the same time.
