I need some suggestions on Characters that dont talk. Are all the 'head' characters silent? Donald Mickey Minnie Goofy Sofia etc? How do you explain to your children why they dont talk? Trying to prepare my kids.... and keep the magic alive :)

yes the head characters are the ones that do not talk....however I don't know how you would explain it to your kids....oddly enough my 4 & 5 year old never asked why they couldn't talk :confused3

Unfortunately, my DD 6 has been watching Youtube videos of DL and parades etc...and already asking why they dont talk...I said it they might not be allowed to use their magic voices, but that I would ask :p

I've always said that they save their voices because they would get tired talking all day. Not sure if that is the right answer or not ??
DD asked on the last day of our trip when she was 3 and I said that and just last week (5.5 now) she asked again and I said the same response. She seemed satisifed but then also asked why their heads were so hard and big. I was stumped at that one and I think she just became side tracked by something else when I didn't respond right away...

I told my kids that some of the characters only talk when they are on TV, and they seemed ok with that explanation. On our most recent trip, I noticed my DD6 wasn't talking to the characters, but she was smiling and hugging them. I asked her why she wasn't talking, and she said "they can't hear me." She thought that since they couldn't talk, that also couldn't hear!

Our first trip DD6 said "they're just people in costumes right?". She figured it out on her own because they don't talk, eyes and mouth don't move and they're huge! (Besides the fact that they look like costumes) I told her yes they are. But the princesses on the other hand were exactly as they expected - lovely ladies in beautiful gowns and so they found them truly magical.

I'm pretty sure if you ask the CM that stays with them, they would provide a magical answer. I'm sure they get questions like that all the time and already have some well thought out solutions.

Have you seen Enchanted?

When Pip is in his "cartoon" world he can speak, but when comes to the "real" world no one can understand him any more. I used that movie to explain to the kids why they don't talk

My kids always just knew they were just costumes-
They had seen other big costumes elsewhere-
It just made sense to them and didn't take away any of the magic-
How else are you going to explain why Woody, Buzz and Jessie are so big?

The movie Enchanted helped us on this one. Characters came from the animated world to the real world. they looked different, Pip the chipmunk can talk in the animated world but not in the real world. So basically some of the magic that transforms them from a cartoon to real does not get everything. It has worked for now.

You might want to use the "save their voice" excuse if you later go see Mickey and the Magical Map or the Newsboys in DCA as the Mickey there blinks and moves his mouth.

We have used the example from Enchanted as well. That kind of explained why they look bigger or different. We have also used the saving their voice excuse. One of my dd, when she was 6, asked why Tinkerbell wasn't small in Pixie Hollow. We told her that she was small, and that we all shrank once we entered. The next year she asked the same question, and I gave the same answer. She stopped, thought and said "no. I don't think that's true." I was so sad for a minute because I thought she was realizing that the characters are just actors. Then she says, "don't you think its easier for tink to make herself big? Then she doesn't have to shrink everyone". Yes! And the magic is kept for another year!
