Non-Smokers

I was standing next to a concrete ash tray with a large sign on it, indicating the smoking area. A woman came up to me and loudly proclaimed "you better put that out immediately. There are police everywhere and you will be fined $100." Well, I stepped quietly to the side, pointed at the sign and she stormed away. The truth is, there were no fines being imposed, security was just making people aware of the smoking areas and this woman was just trying to scare smokers. She must have been on a "mission".

As a non-smoker I find such behaviour as what that lady did despicable. Does she run after jaywalkers to let them know they will be fined?

If you lit up right beside her and were covering the sign, she might have reason to be perturbed. But busy-bodies just grind my gears.

She may not have seen the sign but a giant, concrete permanent ashtray and the fact the spot was clearly marked on fair maps should have been a clue. I do believe she could see the lit cigarette decal posted on the ashtray.

She actually jogged up to me from half a block away to make her "announcement".

I've never been able to breathe around cigarette smoke. I even had to go home from a sleepover once when my friend's mom was smoking inside with us kids. I could hardly breathe for the rest of the day and the following one. So keep in mind, some of us aren't coughing for no good reason.

That said I'll just avoid DSAs as best I can or hurry through them. I'm surprised Disney hasn't just put together a couple of lounges that filter the air into music from the animated movies and flavors it chocolate scented. You know, since it's Disney =)

Chocolate air, I can get behind that. :rotfl2:

I don't smoke but I don't agree that smoking should be banned. DSA's should be located in spots where the smokers can't possibly bother others.

Well, I am a smoker who follows the rules. Just came back from 6 days and didn't see a single person smoking in a non-DSA. On the other hand, I saw a LOT of non-smokers taking up space in DSA's and then having the nerve to complain about the smoke.
By the way, the exhaust fumes from the trolley about choked me to death!

I know it is a bad habit and you hate it, but smokers are being considerate of you by following the rules and smoking only in the designated smoking areas. Please try to be just as considerate to smokers by NOT camping out in a DSA because of it's shade or seating. There are plenty of places to sit at the parks but very few DSA's. And please don't complain about the smoke if you are in a DSA.

:thumbsup2 Amen. :thumbsup2 :tink:

Sadly I am a smoker...but one who hopes to quit. Have tried many times but each time I fail my smoking habit becomes worse and I smoke more....ugh

So I feel I should weigh in on this.

I ALWAYS follow the rules on smoking at Disney (and in life really) and can name several spots off the top of my head. (Adventureland by dole whip, docks by thunder mountain, between space mountain and CoP in tomorrowland, on one of the castle ramps.... Epcot in Italy (my favorite cuz wine is near by), on either side between FW and WS, near imagination, near Norway.... in DHS by tower of terror.... in AK by Everest, and near pizza safari?)...you get the idea, I was just there in April and would make stops and plan my routes and in between fast pass times at these areas..

I haven't seen anyone smoking outside of these areas personally...and trust me if I did I would be FURIOUS because if I cant smoke there, then neither should they. The vapor e-cigs scare me to death because inhaling chemicals where the liquid itself has warnings galore has made me not even want to consider those...and I am totally on board for them not vaping in lines etc either.. Plus drinking that liquid is toxic and requires you to induce vomiting? Yea id rather stay with traditional smoking than inhale that...

When I am at say the back side of the castle location and having a cig and taking a break I would see people walk by and would even go so far as to refrain from "taking a puff" until they went by because I want to be courteous to them and their kids if any.....I usually only use this one at night and at that time there are still people going by and the walkway is really close to where you can smoke.

I tend to agree that the Adventureland DSA is a tad close to the Dole Whip stand...It seems way too close to such a popular dessert stand, but areas to sit and enjoy that aren't close. They could easily shift it over closer to the tree house and open that area up to the non smokers...

This also goes beyond the theme parks. The resorts, well at least the value ones as those are the ones I have been to in the recent years, have even harder places to smoke. I just stayed at All Star Music and there was one little smoking area in the complex (that I remember) and its fairly inconvenient for most of the rooms. Yet I still used it and would go get my coffee in the morning and enjoy one there or stop there before getting to my room. Of course I thought I was okay sitting there in my designated spot but got accosted by some drunk woman asking me if I was really smoking and decided to tell me the dangers of it as her friend held her up from falling down...classy

I totally get the fact that non smokers don't want to smell it or be around it. Trust me I do. It is a very very bad habit, that for many people (like myself) is so hard to try to quit and even may want too. Even ex-smokers love to tell you how easy it is and how you should do it and give their two cents. But those who are following the rules, trying to be considerate to others and just want to enjoy their Disney experience shouldn't be chastised. Those breaking the rules, however, go at it blast away because ill stand next to you and help.

What makes me really weary though is it always seems the Everest area to smoke at always has strollers with parents smoking above them....I feel guilty smoking around that child even though I'm sure their parents are causing more harm than I am...

I think Disney would be making a mistake removing smoking areas all together. They are great a building walls I think they should just make some better permanent areas that are semi closed off so you cant see it (theming theming theming) and the walls would provide some extra wind barriers to make the non smokers more comfortable as well..

Please don't hate us that are following the rules and are thinking of your comfort even when we are doing the right thing....we do exist!

Like PP, I'm a smoker trying to quit. I don't smoke anywhere near my kid. At Disney, that means I have one or two a day, at the resort, at night after she's in bed, at the furthest DSA on the resort grounds. In the park, I have no problem with people in the DSAs (yes, sad for the people who bring their kids into them so they can smoke, but otherwise, whatever). Honestly, I think some of them are not well-located to be "out-of-the-way" but can't complain about that besides to the Mouse himself... However, I VERY vocally address people who I see smoking outside the DSAs. As I said, I don't smoke near my child - would never expose her to it, and when other people do I get pissed.

I've been a hard core smoker and a non-smoker. I've been shamed for smoking while in DSA's, as in "you know how bad smoking is for you, right?" And by people who weren't the pictures of health themselves - I would NEVER go up to someone who was obese, eating crap food and a huge soda at a restaurant and tell them "you know how bad eating like that for you is, right?" Leave me alone if I'm in a DSA - I'm following the rules.

That being said, I'm a non-smoker now, and happy about it for this Disney trip, because I never did feel comfortable smoking around kids - even in a DSA - I would try to hide my smokes in them, so kids couldn't blatantly see me doing it. And my own kids don't know I ever smoked. They will when they are a little older so I can be sure they know how bad it is for you.

lol This would actually cure many of the problems... and they may sell more food if they did this too.

I think they should build about 4 full scale Rapunzel towers in each park to be the DSAs.

That would be great! I would love it legs might get tired from the steps. But I guess they would have to put elevators in to make it ADA complient. But I bet that would be a great picture oppurtunity! Then the non smokers would complain about that!

Actually I was gonna make you climb up a lock of blonde hair.

I have very rarely seen a smoker not smoking in the right areas and when I do I think that maybe a language barrier is usually the problem. I know that you'll get the occasional defiant smoker but I think that that is very rare.

I agree that non-smokers shouldn't be giving smokers a hard time in the DSA's. I think that smokers should have places to smoke and that they should be clearly marked.

Agreed. I'm a non smoker, but I sometimes wander into a DSA without even realizing it until my air supply is sucked away from me. LOL There are signs, yes, but it's not like they are that obvious. I bet most non smokers that are sitting in a DSA are just oblivious that they are in one.

This is not a new problem, nor is it unique to WDW.

For profit businesses must find a way to balance the needs of ALL guests.
making X% happy by banning smoking means losing Y% of visitors

Cruise lines are a great example. Carnival has the most permissive smoking policy (and continues to dominate) .. Whereas Renaissance Cruises completely banned it (and appears to be going out of business)

Much as it feels good to complain, I don't believe WDW will be making big changes anytime soon

(since we're all outing ourselves, you can put me in the x-smoker pile)

Off topic, but funny you say this. Because we've cruised on Carnival a lot and I've never had an issue in public area with smoking. Yet we just went on an MSC Cruise, and they allow smoking everywhere in public places outside. But ban smoking inside, even in the casino. Yet I had the most issues on this ship because you'd be sitting at the pool trying to enjoy your day and everybody next to you would be smoking. :/

Edited... What is Carnival's policy? I don't even know what it is. I know they allow smoking in the casino though.

Wow I love that Apple + Bear = Cheese Pizza....

I have never once heard of Renaissance Cruises but I remember Carnival from since at least started college (2003).

I have a hard time believing that the smoking policy is the main reason for this. Likely Renaissance tried to capitalize on non-smokers but most people never look to see if a place allows smoking if your a non-smoker.

This coming from a non-cruiser and the 1 or 2 times I have looked for a cruise line the first 4 you are bombarded with are Carnival, Disney, Royal and the Norwegian one.

FYI date of founding:
Carnival - 1972
Norwegian - 1966
Disney - 1996
Royal Caribbean - 1969 (later founded a parent company 1997 to buy out other cruise lines)
Renaissance - 1989

It just shows that Renaissance was the new kid on the block and didn't have a mouse backing them....

While I do think most smokers follow the rules and smoke in the appropriate areas seems to me in past few months I've noticed a few more smokers in the non-smoking areas who appear to be oblivious to the rules. Most obvious was a few weeks ago when standing in long line waiting for ferry at TTC and smelled cig smoke. Looking around saw a few feet away what appeared to be older guy and two younger people-father and 20 something children?- just puffing away while people were standing all around them. Thankfully they did stop when the ferry arrived and people started boarding.

Another time couple weeks ago walking around World Showcase and again smelled smoke and a guest just walking along smoking.

So smoking does happen outside DSAs but like I said before most smokers follow the rules. Thanks.

I don't think their smoking policy has anything to do with it either. Carnival "dominates" (if you can even call it that) because they are the most affordable cruise line for families, out of the major known ones you listed.

I'm trying to price out a cruise on Royal Caribbean for June of 2015, and for a family of 4 with 1/2 off the second fare, it's still $4,600 (for a balcony).

We recently cruised on MSC cruise line and it was really affordable (kids sail free!!), but they had some issues, and I recently read that they are pulling their ship out of the States because they weren't getting the response they had hoped. It's only been here since November. :/
