Non-Conforming is the new conforming

In the past couple years and with gradual increase, I have seen so many people say they dress the way they do just to be different. I look around and about 20 other people in that area are saying the exact same thing...all wearing the same exact clothing. From that, I watch tv and notice even more people dressing in such a way to be different. Obviously you aren't going to be different if 10 million people are dressing in the same, unorthodox way.

Besides fashion, music is also another factor. People will say they listen to a certain style just because they want to be different. Then, the music becomes popular and even more popular because so many people are listening to it to be different...that isn't different!

I guess I'm just tired of hearing people claiming they are non-conformists...half of them don't even know what it is to be non-conforming.

I have no idea what non-conforming means!! Anyway, I don't really do things to be different. I'll dress a certain way or listen to certain music if I like the clothes or band. I think thats why you can see me in Abercrombie & Fitch clothes, listening to FFTL. (At my school, that's like I commited a crime.....)

I dress differently compaired to a lot of people. I wear mismatched outfits with bold colors, lots of jewlery(think 1985), and I stand out. But I don't dress that way so I will stand out. I dress that way because I love wearing exactly what I want to and not worrying about what is in style or what the new designer just put out. Everyday I have someone come up to me and say, "I love that. I wish I could wear that. I'd look stupid if I tried it. But you look so cute!" And I always respond, "I do look stupid, but I don't care. so you think that I don't."

I wouldn't call my clothing non-conformative. I would call some of my political views and ideas non-conformative. I would call my artwork non-conformative.

So for the stuff that matters, yes I am unconventional. Clothing doesn't matter.

i dress different but not the kind of "different" on tv. ive wore leggings before but i dress tacky because it boosts my self esteem. im non corforming but if someone listens to the same music as me i dont listen to it any more. i just hate being like other people.

well idk.

i like diffrent music than alot of people in my "clique". but idk if im non-conforming. i usualy just wear jeans and a hoodie. idc that much about what i look like when im coming to school. i guess that could make me diffrent.

[non-conforming people arent that bad...]

I just wear whatever I want, and listen to whatever I feel like listening to. And basically, I have no problem with what anyone else does if they're doing it because they want to. But, when people start to act a certain way just so they stand out, well, I think that's stupid.

I don't want to be different.
I don't want to be the same.
I dress how I want to dress, I listen to what appeals to me. I don't go out in search of the best band that no one knows of. Why? Because a) eventually they might become popular, b) if know one knows who they are but me, who am I going to discuss things with? I just like what appeals to me, whether it be crappy music, unheard of music or mainstream. Forget what others say.

As far as dressing goes, it's the same thing. I wear what looks good on me, and what I like. I'm not going to dress like a goth because some people might think it's cool or because in my school there are more prep's running around than goths. There's not point. Yeah sure, I shop mostly at AE, yeah sure that's what all the popular people in my class are wearing, but I don't really care that much. I just like my clothes, if they were all wearing Chanel I wouldn't want to just all of a sudden want to wear that. (I know Chanel is unrealistic, but you catch my drift?)

Thats one of the biggest things I love about emo kids. They'll say they have their own "style", then you'll look around and see a bunch of other kids who look/dress/act the same exact way.

I dress in jeans and a t-shirt. I really don't conform to anything. One day I'll go to school looking like someone in a rock band, the next day, someone on the football team.

i know people who wear clothes so they can attract attention. i dont. my usual outfit is jeans/shorts, t-shirt, hoodie(if cold enough), and flipflops or tennis shoes. when we go to nice places, i have to fight with my mom bcuz i feel comfortable in jeans. well, i sorta do wear clothes so i attract attention. but thats only in volleyball! so i am noticed how good i dress and play! :rotfl:

If I see someone wearing something I think is cute of course I'll want one.
I wear footless leggings under my dresses and colorful tunics under my tee shirts.
I put on too much eye makeup and cut my own hair.
I guess if that makes me a conformist, then I'm a conformist.

I think people need to relax.
Its just clothing.
Everyone is inspired by something.
Who really cares if other people wear it?

I actually had "emo" in mind when I started this thread, heh.

The other reason I started the thread was because after my refusal to do what everyone else did at a class meeting, I was told by some that I only did it to go against everyone else...that I was trying to be non-conforming. I was told by others that what I did was great. The reason I did it was because I strongly disagreed with the concept and was appalled that it would even be considered. I was, apparently, the only one to think that...or least the only one to stick up for what I believed. (I heard a few people saying they did it because they didn't want to look stupid by not doing it...but they didn't really agree either).

Now, I'll tell you all, I'm a non-conformist. I don't conform to what today's society throws at us as being "cool" and "trendy" or "in-style". I listen to the music I want, I dress the way I want, I write and draw the way I want and I will sure as hell act the way I want to, heh. I will not conform to society, that isn't me. If what I do happens to be what is "in" then so be it. But that certainly isn't what I strive for. I know what is good and what is bad for me. I have my opinions and stick to them. As long as I can keep those principles, why should I want to conform? I have my own personality and if I don't exemplify it, who will? I am now and will continue to be someone who marches to the beat of her own drummer...I don't care if you join me in the march or not...that is YOUR decision.

I'll tell you what, I'm aware (as is everyone else) that what you wear projects an image of your personality. That said it doesn't always mean it projects the RIGHT image. All I wear is skirts and dresses. Very seldom will you see me in a pair of pants, maybe exercise pants or gauchos. The reason is because I can never find pants to fit me right and frankly I am more comfortable in a skirt, and I love the variety/patterns/colors I can get with skirts, so that is all I wear. This makes some people think I am a girly girl. Whatever, I'm not ashamed of being a girl or anything, but I'm not THAT girly, just normal. Obviously this makes me "different" than most people, if you know me. But that's not the reason I do it.
As for the emo kids, most of them are just doing it because they think it's a cool fashion and WANT to fit in with that group. They may say it's to be "different" from society, but surely they must realize that society in general is made up of SO many different groups (such as the one they have chosen to be part of).
What gets me, and my DH, is how someone dressed really extravagant (like punk or goth) will be all like, "what are you staring at" if people stare at them. Well HELLO! You wanted to look different didn't you? If people are staring, you've succeeded so stop wondering why!!!

I dont neccisarily conform clothing wise b/c i dont know anyone else in my school who wears what i do but its still the fashion trend so i guess it is conforming in a way to but whatever i dress how i like....and music wise im a DJ so i kind of have to conform b/c i have to play what everyone likes although i prefer techno, house and trance which is not conforming. i guess im just caught in the middle lol

I hate that. I had a goth/punk/scary phase and I was hardcore. I mean, all black, dark hair, chains. everything. But I expected weird looks, and I loved every second of it. I never regret dressing that way, I still love the look, even if I don't wear it anymore.

You don't have to like the music you play as a DJ, heh...though it helps. Technically, by doing your job you can't be considered as one who intentionally strives to be like everyone else. You're just doing your job.

Why would your mom be upset over that? lol...I don't see anything wrong with it...I mean, it isn't like you are wearing something that is too revealing. I wouldn't wear that outfit...but that is just me. Though I do like the skirt...heh.

Also...clean up your room, young lady! :lmao:
