Has anyone heard any kind of news report about the conditions at the Audubon Zoo? My brother works there and we've seen Jack Hanna talk about the wildlife, but no coverage yet about the zoo animals or any surviving facilities. Any word that you've heard????

Ducklite was saying that after Andrew that Audobon spoke with Miami Zoo and got a comprehensive plan in place and that regardless the conditions outside of the zoo that they would stay at the zoo. Last she shared was that the animals were doing well.

Oh, thank you so much!!!! If you hear anthing more, would you mind posting it or PMing me? I know he is concerned - he works with the swamp animals and is really attached to them.

I saw footage yesterday of some giraffes at the zoo. They looked much calmer then the rest of NO and they were eating something. The local news said keepers were there with them.

My daughter works at the Memphis Zoo, and in talking to a co-worker who knows and talked to a freind at the NO Zoo yesterday, told me they only lost a few river otters.
But this is third hand news so take it for what it's worth.

Actually it wasn't Miami Zoo, it was representatives of several zoo's and animal rescue/disaster response organizations. Miami Zoo might have bene part of teh team, but there were many others :)

Awwww, not the river otters. They're such happy and playful creatures. :(

I'm glad that all the other animals are probably okay, though.

I heard it was two flamingo's. Eitherway, they did a GREAT JOB!

BTW--A little irony--the American Association of Zookeepers was supposed to have their annual conference in NOLA this week. My friend is a zookeeper and was supposed to attend.

agreed Anne, they have done a great job. My daughter also told me there are only 12 people at the zoo now, so they are woefully shorthanded. They are also having to defend the animals in the zoo from the animals outside the zoo ( human ones mostly).

Hmmm...hungry large cats or agitated large primates...add looters...could be interesting. My money's on the cats and primates. I was going to say animals, then I realized that would cover the gamut...

Although most zookeepers will tell you they'd root for the primates over the big cats! Primates are INCREDIBLY strong and VERY smart. In the wild the big cats generally keep their distance. (I'm not talking about the smaller simians, just the large primates.)
