So my hubby suprised me with a timeshare....

But it wasn't a dvc. He researched other kinds of timeshares, and decided that even though he told me he was getting me a dvc, that it would be a better compromise and due to our vacationing habits a better deal.

DVC resorts are a trade option so that is the plus side.

I am still really grateful that I finally have a timeshare even if it wasn't my first choice of which kind.

Maybe a DVC will come in the future when he realizes how great timeshares really are. Until then I will have my fun with this one. I am already planning, and oddly enough this place covers a trade out to the place I vacation every year no matter what, so now not only are DVC resorts covered, my vacation that I would have had to put $1,000 out of pocket to go to is also a basically cash free option.

Just curious, which timeshare did you go with?

Good luck trading into DVC, it really depends upon the trading power of your timeshare. Did your husband buy into a different Orlando area timeshare, if so, DVC trades are blocked.

Nope he bought into Williamsburg Plantation (in Williamsburg VA)

Congratulations. If gas prices keep going higher, at least you bought close to home. :)

I see that Williamsburg Plantation is on DVCs approved II list of resorts, so you will likely have good trading power.

It looks like very pretty resort.

It is a beautiful place, I've been to the area before, great for history buffs and just overall great scenery.

I hope it has pretty good trading power, there are only 7 timeshares in the area so I'm hoping that he made an alright decision for a first time purchase.

Welcome to the greater family of timeshare owners! Now head over to the Timeshare User's Group (TUG) website at http:\\www.tugbbs.com for learning how to best use what you have! :)

It's just down the road from Marriott Manor Club. I know the Manor Club owners are big on booking the week with July 4th if they plan on using it to trade. Followed that saga last year on TUG. :rotfl2:

By the way, I hope you bought resale and not developer. You can save a ton of money by buying resale. If you bought from the developer and are within your 7 day rescind period, I'd back out of it. You could buy this place for pretty cheap on Ebay and still own some DVC points to boot. Go out to Ebay and take a look at the auctions - active and completed.

Congratulations....at least you have your vacation ownership and hopefully will get some good trades with DVC!

Congrats on your purchase! We bought 2 Marriotts before we finally purchased DVC so there is hope! We have gotten some terrific trades with our weeks thru II; Hawaii, Aruba and OKW for later this summer.

You are looking at apples and oranges comparing WP to DVC. One is a point system and one can only be booked for entire week at a time, if I am not mistaken. Many timeshare owners own both types of systems. You just bought your week long one first!

I also highly recommend TUG. I have learned so much to maximize our ownership. With a week type system you usually do better planning a year in advance unlike DVC with the 11 month and 7 month window. Go over to TUG and you will quickly learn the ins and outs.

So, let me get this straight... this was a surprise for you but you didn';t get what you wanted? Yikes- what happens on your birthday , do you get a lawnmower or tool kit?;) Try getting him something YOU want for his birthday or the next holiday- maybe you can balance this thing out.

I know right!! Well he is good as long as he is picking something from the jewelry store or COACH.
If he strays from there things get sticky!!

Actually I will be getting a DVC now.
Since signing last night some true colors have shown through, and we weren't told the truth about several aspects of the timeshare. We are in VA so we have 7 days to cancel and we are going to be cancelling. Hubby has now decided that at least with Disney you know what you are getting and there is no hidden business or trying to buy you. They have more of a take it or leave it attitude, not I will tell you what you want to hear to get your signature on paper.

Unfortunately a common tale with timeshare salesmen. At least you'll get your DVC!!

I rescinded once in VA and called the Va State timeshare regulators. They said make sure you send it EXACTLY as your contract says--so if it says by mail--DO NOT SEND FED EX!! For VA, the date rescinded is the DATE mailed---it is worth it to go to the post office and send it certified return receipt (not necessary--but the best $10 or so you'll ever spend) and make a copy of your letter and keep a copy of your receipt and keep the return receipt when it comes back--sometimes, the TS office claims they never got it, etc. But, it's no big deal if you have proof. They are used to a certain % canceling and usually (after they tried to persuade you to not cancel, get a better deal, etc.), they matter-of-fact cancel you.
I also STRONGLY suggest you read TUG for a month or two, even before buying DVC--it's a wealth of knowledge--there's a DVC sub-board--a number on TUG have both DVC and other timeshares-there are pros/cons to all timeshares, including DVC and there are good non-DVC ones---TUG will give it to you straight. good luck, Elaine (ps-- I also like DVC's above-board marketing and no baloney--it's just a bit pricey if you want a 2 BR for the whole week).

Oh, I'm so glad you were within your 7 day rescind period. :) Follow it to the letter and do what others here have suggested on the certified mail.

We own two other EOY (every other year lock-off 2 bedroom) timeshares besides DVC points, but we bought them resale for at least a 1/4 of what the developer sold them for originally. We use those usually to trade into Orlando bigger units (2 bedrooms mostly). There's nothing wrong with owning others, just buy VERY carefully. We love our DVC points and we like to stretch our points and usually use them Sunday through Thursday for onsite stays - :) It's so nice to pick up the phone and call DVC and book what you want when you want it.

I'm pretty upset that all of this is happening, and it has left a bitter taste in my mouth about week long timeshares, but I still won't be opposed to one in the future, just not with this company, I would probably check into Marriott or the likes.

We are waiting on a call from Judy( our guide) to get things rolling with a DVC. Disney has to strong of an image to uphold so I know buyng with them will be no nonsense.
