No VGF availability at 11 months????

IMO, part of your difficulty was stating your vacation on a Tuesday (really, any weekday). Lots more competition for those mid-week nights from members who are beginning their stays before you. The most popular check-in day for DVC stays is Sunday. I don't think it would have been quite so hard/stressful for you if you begin your reservation on a Friday or Saturday. If you decide to "walk" next time, my advice is to start on a Friday or Saturday. Good luck and enjoy your stay next October. :)

So does walking a res just mean booking one day at a time?

At 11 months, you can book for seven days. Walking a reservation means you use that seven days to get a head start. You book your first day as the last day of a seven day reservation at your first opportunity. Since the first day will be the most difficult, you could get a longer head start on it by booking as soon as any consecutive seven days are available. Then, each day, you can add one day on the end and drop one day from the beginning until your desired reservation is complete.

there's no real need for daily calls, though.

if i have booked 10/24/15 to 10/31/15 today, no one else can book 11/1/15 (for example) until 12/1/14. so i can wait till 11/30/14 to call and walk that reservation from 10/30/15 to 11/5/15 (for example).

but you would have to call MS to walk the reservation since you cannot make those kinds of changes online.
