No tip

What ticks me off more than a messed up order/food late/forgotten meal is a waiter/waitress making excuses and blaming anyone and everyone else in the restaurant for the poor service. If the waiter screws up the order, take responsibility and own up to the mistake! I'm more inclined to tip a decent amount if they admit they were at fault.
It seems like we run into this problem more and more, hence eating out less and less.

You're so heartless, Gumbo. You occupied a table of hers for over an hour and didn't leave a satisfactory tip! Who cares if you got shoddy service and food! The woman deserved to be paid for her time!

LOL I HOPE you are joking!!!! I am a waitress myself and I would not have tipped in that situation either. The waitress should have told them why their food was taking so long and let them decide if they would like to order something else that would not take an hour.

I'm always aware of the bolded when I go to dinner or happy hour with my girlfriends and we can get to talking and take up a table for awhile. At least she could have had another table come in that time we took it up.

We always tip more for that.

Um, heck no! I too hope youre joking! If the server and kitchen did their job right, Gumbo and his spouse would have been out of there A LONG TIME AGO and they couldve turned over the tables quickly in order to get a tip from both Gumbo & another customer. Because they took too long to make Gumbo's meal, not only did they FAIL to turn over the tables quickly, but the customer (Gumbo) waited a ridiculous amount of time (more than he wanted, from what he had stated) as well as the server got ZERO tip. Its not his fault he occupied a table longer than necessary!

The server & kitchen only have themselves to blame.

I too was a server once, I wouldnt have tipped either. If i had tipped, it would have been minimal.

But yes, I'm joking. Gumbo did nothing wrong.

Sorry but im not very good with subtlety. A simple nod doesnt tell me someone is joking or not. Had you followed up with an LOL, then I'd know! :)

We recently ate at Red Lobster for their lobster fest. The place was packed! I ordered lobster bisque instead of a salad and it took forever. DH had polished off his salad long before my bisque got there. The waiter came by more than once, promised to comp the bisque, then waited in the kitchen til they fixed it.

When the bill came, the waiter had comped my whole meal, which was close to $30. DH pointed out the mistake to the waiter, who had only offered to comp the bisque, and we certainly didn't expect my whole meal to be comped, but the waiter insisted. oh durn!

You can bet he got a nice tip.

I blame the Internet more than anything. The facepalm gif was more in response to my joke falling flat.

I'm just glad Gumbo knew where I was coming from, or else I'd feel bad.

Maybe if you posted a gif of Mr.Bean for example, it wouldve been more obvious! :rotfl2:

If it was me, I would've left a 20 percent tip on the credit card and complained to the manager. That way the manager and server know you're not complaining just because you didn't want to skip on the tip. The manager deserves to know that you received very bad service and to have a chance to rectify the situation, IMHO.

Will you go to the restaurant again?

Why would you leave the tip? Just make the complaint.

I only left a $5 tip at Chef Mickey's. DH did not want to leave a tip at all but I had all these cute little tip envelopes made up and it was our first meal.

Our waiter stood and watched DH spill his drink. He was taking the drink order for a large party seated near us, so we figured he'd bring a drink back for DH soon. Well, he brought the other party's drinks and high-tailed it out of there. When we were about half-way through our meal we finally saw someone busing tables. We told him we needed refills and that we hadn't seen our waiter (I think he had the whole section we were in.) Well, that guy disappeared, too.

DS(5.5 then) wasn't drinking his drink. Goofy came around and tried to engage DS but he wouldn't get out of his seat. Goofy got DS's drink and acted like he took a drink. DH actually drank DS's drink but DS still thinks Goofy did it 3 years later. The other day, I told him the truth. He said "Wait, why was Daddy wearing a Goofy costume?" I gave up! :goodvibes

After we had been finished eating for about 10 minutes, our waiter brought us refills and our check. He talked to us for a few minutes and he gave us some advice that was pretty good (can't remember now). I had calculated 18% tips for all of our meals and had the tip envelopes separated out for each day's ADRs. I took out the other $15 that I had planned to leave for our waiter and stuck it in my pocket. Looking back, I should have done something more about getting refills earlier in the meal but I was trying to have a pleasant evening. :)

Why would you leave the tip? Just make the complaint.

Because I was a restaurant manager and server for years, and the server would have to be flat-out rude (not just inattentive) for me to not leave a tip. Once a server, always a server, and I have a soft spot in my heart for people making just $2.13 an hour. And as a former manager, I know that the people who usually complained did so only because they hoped we'd comp the meal. Unfortunately, people who have legitimate complaints often don't say anything.

As a matter of principle (one that I could afford at only $5), I would have paid the bill, tipped and THEN complained, so the manager would know I didn't want anything other than to bring a problem to his/her attention.

And just wanted to point out, I did not say that the OP SHOULD have tipped, only that I would have.

I got it, too! I've read too many "how dare you take up a table" threads to have missed it!
