Well, I can't remember the last time I did this, but we left no tip at lunch. DW had the day off and came to meet me. We sat down in the restaurant about 11:40, ordered fairly quickly, didn't get our food until 12:35. Personally, I think that's a long time to wait for 2 sandwiches, 1 of which was the special. In the interim, we saw numerous people come in after us, eat, and leave before we ever got our food. The explanation from the waitress was that DW's brisket was the holdup. Kitchen was busy and as they didn't have brisket sliced, they kept kicking our order to the bottom of the list until they caught up. Waitress came by to check on us once. When the food arrived, I told her to bring 2 boxes and the check. I wolfed down enough to get through the afternoon, boxed the rest up, left $25 on a $24.92 bill.

Usually, I feel bad enough for the wait staff that I still tip well even when the kitchen screws up. But, that combined with her not checking on us nor checking with the kitchen after the holdup was too much. Food was pretty decent, what I had of it. But, I could not bring myself to tip. First time in forever.

You did the right thing. I always leave no tip if I have awful service. I don't understand why people just tip to tip. I give them a tip based on the service that was provided to me. Isn't that the way commerce works?

I applaud you for not caving into societies mores and hopefully that server either picks up their game or is canned.

I can sympathize. Busy restaurant, lots of sandwiches, and a waitress who wasn't paying attention.

I might have sought out the manager. The waitress obviously wasn't taking care of you, but the real problem was in the kitchen.

I agree, but I honestly do think it was the waitresses job to explain the issues so you aren't just sitting there waiting and wondering.

It's the waitress' job to take care of the customer and to fix any problems with the order, but it was the kitchen that messed up the order. I think the manager would want to know there's a problem in the kitchen.

If the problem was with the Kitchen, sorry I am not buying it, I personally think the waitress more than likely screwed up and was using the kitchen as a easy excuse. Waitstaff know their tips are based on service no matter whose fault it is and I have seen on many occasions when the server goes to the kitchen to find out what the problem is.

Well, you did leave an .8 cent tip! :rotfl2: But seriously, sorry you had to experience crummy service.

You ordere, you saw your waitress once in the hour you sat there. The food comes you have it boxed and leave. Waitresses problem even if it did originate in the kitchen. She had control to change the outcome to a positive one. Too late after an hour of waiting for lunch and seeing her one time.

No tip - bet she knows why also. Sometimes lunch is a nightmare in a busy place!

And, FTR, I can't remember the last time I didn't tip. This would be one of them.

Sorry you didn't get to really enjoy the lunch out today.

Good for you. I've gotten bad service from waitstaff but I always leave a tip because I feel bad. I wish I could just leave no tip when the service is really bad but I just can't.

You did right, I probably would have have considered leaving but I guess you figure any second and it's coming out. The bad thing is the restaurant still got paid for your meal and can only be hurt now by the poor service if you never go back.

We had a horrible experience at Red Robin once. The waitress was rude to the kids and we waited for about an hour for our food. We did have our apps and other people got us refills. When our food arrived it was cold so I had a chat with the manager. She comped our meal and since we didn't have cash I left to go get some. Yep we were going to leave her a tip. I figure it might not be her fault since the place was packed. At the end of the meal I made a comment about how busy the place was and she went off on me. I had another chat with the manager. Turned out we were the only ones complaining about her. My guess she was fired that day since we were #3 on the comp meal list that day.

Springs should be showing up any time now, I'm sure she has a google alert that notifies her of any tipping threads! :rotfl:

While I do feel like you were justified, I also want to know if you complained to the waitress or the manager while on site. I would be finding someone ~30 minutes after ordering. IMO, that's more than enough time even if they dropped your food while they were bringing it out to you. :rotfl2:

We've not left a tip only once. It was at Applebees (I know, I know should have known better). DH went I there one Thurs evening, the place was less about 1/3 full. The section we were put in only had 1 other table. It took almost 10 min for the waitress to come by and get our drink order. We should have just left then. We placed our drink order and food order at the same time. Didn't order anything complicated. We finally flagged our waitress down after 30 min asking about our food. We hadn't seen here since she brought our drinks. She said the kitchen was backed up. :confused3 She came back about 5-10 min later with our food. After we finished eating it was another 20 min trying to get the check and that was only after flagging her down again since she hadn't come back by since our food arrived. There were no apologizes or excuses.

It was so bad that when other people were sat in our section DH and I joked with each other that we hoped they weren't expecting to get served anytime soon.

We said something to the waitress when the food came. It was 30+ minutes until she explained the issue, but then an additional 10-15 before the food came. That was the nail in the coffin for me.

I am guessing she forgot to put in your order and then forgot about you. Since you asked about the food and got it 10-15 mins later, it probably wasn't made until right before you got it.

I wouldn't have left a tip, either.

I'm sorry your lunch with your wife was soured, though. I know when DH and I manage to have lunch together during the week it is a nice break for him.

Almost forgot, I ordered potato salad and got fries.
