No surgery for us........

Well, after being rescheduled two weeks ago by the hospital for my son's open heart surgery, we were bumped again! He was supposed to be the first case of the day, but was bumped for a 2 day old infant. We got there in the early afternoon and waited, when they informed us that the first surgery was taking longer than expected and my son's would not be happening. The bad part is that even though he needs this surgery it is considered elective at this point in his life, so we can't just get back on the schedule. They are not taking electives until December. DH works retail, so that will be too difficult. It looks like we will have to wait another year.

I keep trying to put it in perspective that he is pretty healthy right now and we are lucky that we have a choice on when it will be done. There are a lot of other children that need help right away, but it is hard. It also doesn't help that there is only one surgeon covering 1/4 of New York State. Sorry this is so long, but I needed to vent. It has been a stressful week.

Hercamore, we tried going to Pittsburgh last year, the same thing happened. They postponed and the next available date was too close to the start of school. He was starting kindergarten at the time so we scheduled this year. We actually tried Pittsburgh again, but it took forever to hear back from them with a date, and my cardiologist suggested we try the hospital closer to home. We knew this could happen again and it did. Oh well, things happen for reasons, it is not his time to have this done. They have come a long way with perfecting a non-invasive surgery, but at this point he is not a candidate. Maybe someday.

Oh no! That is so diappointing!! I am glad that your son is healthy enough to have his surgery on an elective basis, but having to postpone the surgery when you are all set must be very disappointing. {{{{Hugs}}} to all of you.

I am soooo very sorry for all that you and your family are going through. I am a nurse that works in surgery, with adult heart patients. I know all too often that emergencies bump scheduled cases, and I do wonder how those families handle the emotional roller-coaster. If it is not to invasive of a question, what kind of surgery does he need, it amazes me that you now seem to have to wait 2 years from when it was originally deemed necessary. I too would not be so patient. You do have an amazing calm perspective and I pray for strength for you and your family.

Prayers for you. The same thing happened with my mom when she had eye surgery. She kept getting bumped and at one point, I couldn't take it anymore and basically just told the doctor to either do this surgery, or he'd really see me mad.
