Help me understand how this works. I couldn't get a studio at VWL for June 3-10, and had to go with studio a few days and switch to a one bedroom. Tonight when I went on line, there are studios available thru disney.com.

What's the deal?

Disney owns a small percentage of the inventory which it rents out as regular rooms. In addition, Disney gets points and rooms when members trade thier points for regular hotel rooms, cruises etc..... So if a VWL gave up 400 points for the member cruise that's a few rooms for Disney to rent....

I believe they retain a minimum of 4% of the total inventory

Cheers

I think they need to make this a bigger part of the prepurchase information. This is the second new thread I've seen on this today. I thought everyone was told about breakage and Disney inventory. They need an article on this in Vacation Magic.

It wouldn't matter. Even if we had an article, a year later folks would be back with the same question. It just comes up every now and then and most folks don't pay attention until it impacts them!

This is prominent in the prepurchase information. Unfortunately, and this is in no way aimed at the OP who asked a quite innocent question in a very nice way, a lot of people do not read the documents and get their questions answered before they sign on the dotted line. That is evident along so many dimensions in the recurring threads we see on the board. I also understand the frustration of not being able to get a points reservation when there is cash availability, even though that is the way the system works.

So if I were to wait list the week I want, and Disney can't rent this week for cash, will I then get the room with my points or will they leave it vacant?

Officially, they leave it vacant, but sometimes Member Services is able to pull some strings at the last minute (but doing a full week may be harder in this regard--the situations I am familiar with were same day reservations for one or two nights).

I have gotten lucky with them recalling a room from cash, but when I have it's been really LAST minute. (Like less then a week.) Plus I am only usally asking for one or two nights... Your problem is that you won't know until the LAST minute. I don't think next week will make a big difference. Did you waitlist??

They will sometimes be able to pull back breakage inventory. But I don't think they'll swap over developer inventory. However, there is only developer inventory at SSR. Any points owned by DVD at the sold out resorts is declared inventory already and if the room is available, you would get it. They do reserve rooms with their points but cannot hold the inventory itself without using their points to do so.
