No Smoking....what a joke!

Whenever possible, smoking outside a designated smoking area should be brought to the attention of a Cast Member; Guests should not take matters into their own hands. Granted, much of it is relatively fleeting - people walking around with cigarettes - but in the case of the poster above who regularly encountered the 'cup-as-ashtray', that could certainly have been reported to the Front Desk (and should have; if they don't know about it, Disney can't fine it :teeth: )

For the record - when I asked a Housekeeping CM at Pop where I could smoke, she said "anywhere but the rooms". Then her Supervisor happened by, and she double-checked with him. He corrected her, and showed me several DSAs convenient to my room.

as a smoker, I have found numerous DSAs in the parks. not hard to find, and I should start a thread with my favs!! we know them all VERY well!:rotfl: we are very hapy with the DSAs in all the parks and I, too, get very unhappy with people who don't abide by the rules.
as far as the NEW rule... well, not allowed to debate that, so I won't. but if you are going to totally eliminate smoking rooms, then you have to give smokers someplace to go.(or eliminate tons of business) It would help greatly if DSAs were covered .. even after the storm is gone, the few benches are still wet... for quite some time.
the DSA somewhat near the 50's pool at POP had a walkway avoiding it; I don't see how it bothered anyone.
funny it was mentioned. when we first arrived at pop, there was a DSA WAY to the left of the food court (left yet of the lobby entrance), but people "cut through" there, and gave looks of disdain. halfway through our trip, barricades went up.... you had to PURPOSELY walk into the area, rather than "cut through" it. the DSA was somewhat to left of the lobby entrance, and quite a bit away from the food court entrance. there was ample opportunity to enter the food court without entering the DSA area at all. so there was no way it could bother someone unless they CHOSE to walk through it.
an earlier poster mentioned consideration for all. I couldn't agree more.

I'm quit smoking about 12 years ago and am not one of those very angry people that attack people smoking. I could care less.

I'm surpised when I hear of people so sickened by smoke - how they handle every day exhaust from cars?? or buses?? or any polution?? I'd hate to live that way.

I just got back from POP and only saw smokers in the DSA, the only problem is that there is a big one right outside the food court and in the middle of the 50's. So I smelled more cig smoke this trip than I ever did before when the resort had smoking rooms. Hey people wanted all rooms to go non-smoking so the smokers had to go outside. I think I liked it better before.

I was thinking the same thing. If people are all out smoking now in those areas isn't it going to be more obvious than before?

When we were at OKW in July enjoying our beautiful balcony :goodvibes , DH and I could smell the pungent odor of a cigar wafting from the balcony below us. Neither one of us can stand the smell of cigars or cigarettes, so we just loudly engaged in a conversation - "Do you smell something?" "Yeah, it stinks, but no one could be smoking, right?" "Right, smoking is not allowed in the rooms or on the balconies, and it would have to be reported" - Insert sound of pushed back chairs, footsteps and opening/closing of room door below.:rotfl: Didn't smell smoke anymore!
My other beef with smokers is the ones in the parks who walk through the crowd, lit cigarette in hand trying to hide that there is a trail of smoke pluming out behind them and into the faces of non-smoking children:mad: If they can't find a designated area, why don't they check the park maps or ask the CM's who are around everywhere??? I can't believe people can't wait the few minutes it would take to find the designated area before lighting up. A little common courtesy would go such a long way - it's their choice to smoke, I don't have a problem with that - but it's not our choice to inhale second-hand smoke!:sad2:

Amen !! Couldn't say it better!!

The DSA's at the resorts need to be clearly marked. At Pop - they are not.

Also - the one DSA near the main buiding's entrance needs to be MOVED! The horrible smell and smoke as one enters that buiding is not acceptable to anyone. (I am a smoker, but couldn't stand anywhere near this DSA. At the times when I was walking to the main buiding and not having a cigarette, the air quality near this DSA was absolutely nauseating.) What are the Pop managers thinking??? :confused3

I agree with others who have stated that the smell is WORSE since the DSA's started. Previously, it was spread out throughout the resort. Now it is contained in small areas.

When we stayed at All Star Sports for a couple of nights, we noticed people gathering in an area just outside the food court to smoke. I assumed it was the DSA. I wasn't too thrilled that we had to walk through a pretty thick fog of smoke each morning to get to the food court, but I guess smokers have to smoke somewhere. The same thing happens outside buildings here in NYC -- people can't smoke in the office buildings, so they converge at the building entrance and you have to walk through a haze to get to the building door. I agree with the poster who said maybe it was better when people smoked on their balconies and at least the smoke was dispersed throughout the resort.

Several Smokers suggested smoking on balconies ! With luck and listening to non smokers complaints they will reconsider!!

we just got back from SSR and did see some problems with smokers there, but it was more the location of the smoking area that was the problem. The buildings have one main entrance on the front and guess where the smoking area was located?
Right by the entrance into the building. There were recepticles on only one side, but the smokers walked around the area with their lit cigarettes, so most of the time, they pretty much took over the whole walkway. Even when the smokers stayed near the recepticles, the smoke blows. So if there were any smokers out there, there was no way to get into the building without going thru the smoke. Putting a smoking area where people have no choice but to go thru it is asking for confrontation.

Here is another thing to ponder, (we all have seen these emails)....how did any of us ever make it to adulthood??

when we were kids, we rode our bikes for hours a day WITHOUT helmets, we were outside playing for hours a day WITHOUT pagers or cellphones, we had to come inside for the night when the street lights or alley lights went on, we could not go outside after school until our homework was completed, and lastly, i am sure others can think of more, we had to satisfy our daily chores to earn that weekly allowance of a big $5 a week to spend it on penny candy at the local candy store.

The kids of today will be our leaders of tomorrow. I am glad i'll be pushing daisies by then.

People, how did we EVER make to adulthood ????????? :confused3

In the past when we complained about not being able to use our balcony because of smokers smoking on their balcony, we were told that non-smoking meant the whole room was non-smoking.
Unfortunately, we found out that smokers who asked were often told they could not smoke in the room, but could do so on the balcony. I know other non-smokers were told what we were told. When they put more emphasis on telling people what they think they want to hear instead of the actual rule, people end up even more upset because everyone sees the others are not following the rules they were told (not realizing the other person was told a different rule for the same situation.)

I'm surprised when I hear of people so sickened by smoke - how they handle every day exhaust from cars?? or buses?? or any pollution?? I'd hate to live that way.
I also don't see what the big deal is. I don't smoke and I've never smoked but it doesn't bother me one way or another. I don't see the big deal when you outside. Forest fires occur in FL too and sometimes that's all you can smell.

Thank you to those people trying to keep this thread on topic. This is not the place for social commentary. This is the last warning before the thread is closed.

Just remember if this turns into a debate this thread will be closed. If you care to debate the smoking policy please move your discussions to the community board. Thank you.

BUt I guess the rude generalized comments about smokers are ok ????
Talk about a bias on these boards!!!!!!!

I would have thought the subject line of the OP would have been enough to close the thread.

Disney doesn't enforce the no heelie rule and probably looks like they will do the same with the no smoking. Unfortunately, for those who don't smoke, the DSAs are in areas where non smokers are likely to walk.
I, for one, liked the smoking buildings because the smoke was contained. I smoke but not inside the room.
On my last trip, I smoked on the balcony but this was before the new rules were enforced. I got dirty looks from people on the Boardwalk, 3 floors down.

ummmm I'm thinking it may be a good idea to lock this thread. It's getting a little nasty in here.:scared:
Just my opinion.

Didn't you think the OPs subject line was just asking for trouble? :confused3

For a poster that's only been on the boards for a few months and has less then 100 posts, you have no idea what you are talking about in regasrds to Safetymom. Safetymom is one who gives posters leeway, gives warnings instead of points and is helpful to anyone that has a question. She could have shut this down from the get go but she didn't. I didn't see where she called you a liar but I did see where you called her a bully.

I reported your post as being rude

oh...and I'm a smoker and didn't see it as a bash against smokers, only Disney

Be careful ries mom, I posted a similar thought over a month ago and was repemanded by Safteymom. My comment was argumenative and sarcastic the only thing I said was " people complained when we could smoke in our rooms, now they complain about the DSA's, what's next, I can't were shorts becuase I'm heavey set and I offend those who are'nt?" give me a break!! Outlaw Cigarretts then. Then raise taxes 10 fold to cover the difference, let me hear you complain about that!!!! FYI The cost of a pack of cigarretts in this country is roughly 90 cents per pack the rest is TAXES. You do the math!!
