Just got two of these in my email:

Dear Emily,

Thank you for booking a Disney Cruise Line vacation.

As you may be aware, our ships are primarily designated as non-smoking ships. However, we recognized that some Guests smoke and strive to make a comfortable and enjoyable environment for all of our Guests.

From time to time, we make adjustments to our operation based on Guest feedback and are making a change to our smoking policy. While Guests have never been permitted to smoke in their staterooms, effective November 15, 2013, Guests will no longer be permitted to smoke on stateroom verandahs. Each ship will continue to offer open-air public spaces designated as smoking areas. Information on designated smoking areas can be found on our website at https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/planning-center/my-cruise-plans/faqs/health-safety/smoking.

Thank you again for sailing with us. We look forward to welcoming you onboard.

Sincerely,

The Cast and Crew
Disney Cruise Line

Just thought I'd pass it along!

Looks like a mass email went out seeing as the amount of new threads :)

Personally, since our last cruises verandah enjoyment was killed by a chain smoking couple directly next to us, I couldn't be happier :)

WOO HOO!!!

:cool1: I was worried about this with our Alaskan cruise, and I am so relieved that Disney has changed this policy :thumbsup2

Is your cruise after Nov 15th (sorry I'm mobile so I can't see signatures so I don't know if its in yours) just wondering since our cruise is Nov 9-16 and I didn't get an email. Not that it matters I'm just curious. I like getting emails from them.

My cruises are next May and September and I got the same e-mail tonight. It looks like the OP's cruises are 2 months and 6 months out.

Ours is in Dec and no email. Doesn't really matter to me either, but just curious as to why only some folks got them.

I'm not a smoker, never have been. However, this is where I know for sure that my mom will never cruise with us. My brother went in May but that'll be his last now, I'm sure. They wake up during the night at least twice and go outside to smoke. ((They don't smoke inside the house.)) I don't see either of them being willing to walk down to wherever the designated smoking area is during the night. Oh well.

The emails are for March 2013. We cruise in Oct before the policy goes into effect.

DH enjoys his coffee and a good cigar early in the a.m. on the verandah (or out on our patio at home). When I let him know of this drastic change, we may be canceling our upcoming cruise. :confused3

We may be canceling ours as well. My DH might have made do with the electronic cigarette but they have banned that too. Since we have to fly to San Juan anyway, we may just spend the week there. I'm sure the non smokers will be thrilled.

I posted this on one of the other threads but it may be more fitting here as this seems to be more smokers so here goes....

i'm a non smoker but have never been bothered by smokers so I never saw the issue. i'm not going to argue the point but not sure how anyone figures the smoke just sits around and the breeze doesn't blow it away.
anyways...I do have to wonder if they will see a drop in veranda reservations. I know some non smokers will say that they will now be able book the verandas but I think the true test will come over the next year. a lot of smokers will spend less money and get an ov or inside now because the veranda is on no use for them. from everything I read on the smoking threads its made to sound like half the cabins were smokers. again, I sure never noticed though.
could mean big discounts on verandas......its a wait and see game.

I guess I should add a drop in sales period! I wish you all luck but don't count it out yet. give it some time. its the $$$ that will talk for you.

let me also add, non smokers make a lot of noise, while I tend to see the smoker wanting to quietly just be able to do their thing, leave me alone, I wouldn't bother you and you don't bother me. so it could be a case of Disney heard the non smokers but it will come down to the $$$.

I'm a non-smoker but my hubby does enjoy an occasional cigar. He is going to be a bit upset knowing he can't enjoy his cigar on the veranda he paid extra for. Why can't disney just block off a section of verandas for smokers and place people around them who don't mind the smoke in the open air around them. Just my two cents.....

Honestly the problem with that would be people would not be able to get the rooms they wanted. There are many people who try to book the same rooms every cruise, if they were non smokers and that room became part of a smoking section they wouldn't be happy same for smokers when those rooms would be all booked. Unfortunately not everyone is going to be happy with any change. I have already seen people complaining about the outdoor smoking areas here and on FB. AFAIK these have always been smoking areas, however the focus will shift to them because that's the only place it will be allowed.

Maybe I am in the minority, but in my day to day life I rarely see or know many smokers.

Personally, I think it is a great idea for DCL. Sure smokers are smoking outside, but the smoke is invasive.

We were at the beach the other week. A family was right next to us in an oceanfront cottage. He came out to the beach, sat down, lit up and it was blowing right in my face. Really? He began to read. I got up and moved my chair.

Then, I thought. What if I had 10 huge speakers and some really loud music. I turned it to the highest volume... so loud the sand was vibrating. I turn the speakers toward the smoker. No difference really.

The more companies that won't accommodate smokers the less people that will smoke.

Love it! I can now book a verandah!

You can have the verandah me & my DBF (she's a smoker) won't be booking on our next cruise.

With changes, there is always someone who's happy and someone who's not. But you'll never catch me wearing shorts in the MDRs! Hee hee!

I'm so excited about this change! We have the Walt suite booked for our 10th anniversary on the Wonder and we had been entirely pleased about the whole thing with the exception of reports on these boards that we probably couldn't use the verandah as my DH is very sensitive to smoke.
I believe this brings Disney in line with the rest of the cruise industry, from what I've read on here. Could someone with more cruise experience than DCL let me know if that is true?

Yes, yes, yes. Celebrity stopped verandah smoking years ago. Also, no smoking inside, including the casino. How wonderful to be able to actually sit out on the verandah without sharing smoke with your neighbor. The smoke doesn't just stay with the smoker or on the verandah. It also travels into the next room whenever you open your door. Azamara also has a very strict policy. We don't see any drop in revenue for either Celebrity or Azamara. They are both very successful lines.

Hooray to Disney for finally catching up. :cool1:

this is fine by me! nothing like opening your slider first thing in the am to take in a beautiful day and wham, hit w a smoke cloud.
I quickly realized last cruise I wound up in a designated smoking area on a cruise walk around and I was happy to leave the area and make note not to revisit, however I cannot skip the stateroom!
