NO situation - a question from a UK Diser

Sorry if this seems to be a dumb question but who are the people doing the shooting, looting and raping? Are they drug addicts or just "bad people"? I can't get my head around why anyone would do this at anytime let alone at a time when you really need everybody to be sticking together.

I've been watching Fox News on and off over the last few days and the situation seems to be worse each time I switch on. They knew "Katrina" was coming so why didn't the authorities lay on loads and loads of buses to evacuate the people who didn't have the means to get out themselves? I know it's easy for me to be critical when I am thousands of miles away but the pictures are truely heartbreaking and the stories just so harrowing.

I hope and pray that the situation improves quickly - people dying of thirst in America in 2005 is just unthinkable.

I am shocked and saddened by all of this too. Its unbelievable the way people are behaving. to anyone affected by this. Wish there was something I could do to help.

They are normal everyday people on the streets, people so tired, hungry and thirsty that hysteria has taken hold. I'm sure the majority had bad pasts, but I think even someone who's never commited a crime before could be driven to do so now. It's terribly sad and I'm only a few states away and couldn't imagine that going on here, we are in the year 2005 and in the US, this is not the way it should be.

I agree that its so sad... I can understand the people who are stealing to get food, water, or whatever is needed to survive, but these people who are stealing tvs, dvds, etc.. what in the world are they thinking? Its crazy!! I really think part of it is that they are in shock, traumatized, etc.. I realize there are bad people wherever you go but so many people are just trying to survive.. My heart goes out to each and every one of them.. I dont know what the people are thinking though that are killing, raping.. Just sick.. I just dont understand why our government isnt doing something.. Its hard to believe these people are just dying and they arent doing anything to help them.. I was telling my boyfriend last night that you could see the military at the superdome.. do you really think they are eating and drinking something? I dont.. But why arent they doing something to get these people food and water? I hope there is an end to this soon and they get these people out of there.. I dont think many of them are going to survive much longer.. It makes me truly wonder what Bush would do if there was a huge loss due to terrorists, etc or if something like this happened here.. It makes me doubt my country in times like this... that they would be here for us.. and that this could easily be me and my family.

When you are under stress your true character is exposed. I don't know the people who are doing these bad things, but I'm guessing a lot of them had "history" before. Unfortunately, there are plenty of tourists, old ladies, sick people, & babies who are trapped in there with them, at the mercy of hoodlums. Since the police evidently cannot restore order, anarchy reigns; the bad guys are taking over because they can. The fact that there is not water, food or medical care, coupled with the tremendous heat, means that tempers are flaring and people are desperate. The bad guys get badder and their victims pay the price.

What Idon't understand is why nobody is doing anything about this situation. I mean how long does it take to get control, and get those poor people out of there. It's hard to believe that nobody in authority has any sort of plan to manage an urban disaster! I never thought that i would see scenes like the ones I've seen being broadcast from The US! I can't imagine what you all must be going through watching your fellow Americans behave like this! I can see being driven to loot when you have to survive, but shooting at hospital patients and raping women and children what's that all about!
