No-See-ums--Yuck!

In all my trips to WDW, I have never come home with more than about one mosquito bite all week- and that's kind of rare. All my extended family, and it's rare that among us we have more than one or two bites.

Other places, yes, but not WDW.

that's not to say I have never seen bugs at WDW. I think Disney does do a good job of controlling them.

One thing that amazes me is how few flies I've ever seen at AK or AKL with all the animals and all.

I was just reading another thread where there were reports that flies are extremely bad right now!!! Hmmm, love bugs (normal), no-see-ums, mosquitos, flies!! Sounds like all the snakes and froggies packed up and left Disney and now there's no natural pest control!! :faint::scared1:

Perhaps they have popped out in the last two weeks, but I was there at the end of April, and I didn't really see any bugs at WDW.

The only place we saw bugs was at Universal. We ate outdoors behind Three Broomsticks, and there were a bunch of flies. Otherwise, Universal was also clean.

TB sells a big multi-person platter, a great deal at $50, with plenty of decent food for at least five adults, IMO. It has a pile of veggies! The downside is that they serve it on a big metal tray. There's no place to put the tray when you are done. Folks leave leftovers on the tables until - ? who knows? I saw at least four tables with leftovers sitting out.

The other thing we saw- quite interesting- was a family of ducks being chased by a turtle. All of a sudden, the mama duck was racing through the water with her brood in a frantic zig-zag pattern. Luckily, they all made it to the far shore before the turtle could catch up. A considerable audience cheered for the ducklings!

I've gotten bitten by them on a couple of different trips when we were staying on the beach further south in Florida. The rest of my family was untouched. Luckily it's never been a problem for me at WDW.

I later read that eating bananas can cause them to be more attracted to you. It recommended you avoid bananas the week before you go and while you are there. I have to say the time I got the most bites was the first time; we were at Sanibel Island and I was eating bananas on my cereal every morning. No one else ate bananas that week and they were not bothered at all.

I think when people refer to sand fleas they are the same as no-see-ums. When I had the bites they were bad for a couple of weeks after I got home. Not fun.

I hope you feel better soon OP! Thanks for the heads up. I'll be staying at Kidani in a couple of weeks.

For those not familiar, no-see-um are like a tiny gnat that bites. We live in a humid climate and get them, Avon Skin so soft actually works as a repellant. We probably had the sweetest smelling soccer team in the area. We used to coat our selves in Skin so soft. I don't know if Off works on them or not.
Hope y'all can enjoy your trip, I know I prefer to get bit by a no see um than a biting fly, those REALLY hurt.

I don't remember which trip but my legs were eaten alive after being on the Poly Beach watching Fireworks. I had probably over 50 bites covering my legs and I was miserable. I tried anti itch creams, benedryl, and anything else I could think of but they were still swollen, red, and itched like crazy for weeks after our trip.

I finally read about trying Apple Cider Vinegar on them and it worked. I bought raw, organic ACV and soaked 2 dish towels in it. I then wrapped the dish towels around my legs and left it on for a while (don't remember how long) and then let it naturally air dry. It is smelly but they went away and I finally got some relief!

We are going to Clearwater after our 5 days at Disney next month and I am praying I avoid getting bitten again! I haven't stepped foot in Disney sand since I had the bites although we did stay at AKL and I never got bit.
