No room at Teppanyaki, is it worth going standby?

I tried to make a dinner reservation for Teppanyaki, 2-17, PM, needless to say they are booked. My DH thinks we should go anyway and wait for seating. Has anyone done this? Was it successful? How long did you have to wait? We have 2 small children with bedtimes around 8:30pm. Thanks

I've never actually eaten there but from the looks of the menu and some reviews I've seen I might say no. Do you have a place like this where you live? A Teppanyaki Grill?? Somewhere like Benihana? If you do it sounds pretty much like the same thing. With little ones did you think of maybe a character dinner at the Garden Grill?? Ultimately it's up to you JMHO

We like Teppanyaki. You might try calling Disney Dining when you arrive to see if someone cancelled. I wouldn't wait around hoping for a seat if they tell you now nothing is available. My time is too precious.

The wait for this place without an ADR, and with two small children could be horrible. If you decide to do this, have a back up plan.

Hi, You can try calling the night before or morning of the 17th. I sometimes call for ADR's once we are in WDW and usually can get what I want. If not, show up a short time(15 min.) before they open for Dinner and see if they can seat you. We have done this at Chef Mickey's with good results! But with 2 young children I would advise a backup plan also. Good Luck! Joan

I have actually been sucessful going right at the start of dinner time or lunch when the restraunt opens. Of course that was last Sept. before all of the dining plans. I also checked in around lunch to see if they had anything available for dinner. It is worth a try. Good Luck.

Personally, I would not try it. I have found much better food at several Japanese steakhouses here at home. When at Disney, we like to go places nor available at home.

But, if your heart is set on it, I would call that morning and try, but make a back up ADR in case.

Teppanyaki is WONDERFUL!! I would highly suggest calling the day before or the day of, you might get an opening (we did!) I would not miss it, the kids will love it too!

I have to disagree with OP who said it is comparable to a Benihana or Gasho locally, it is nothing like our local Japanese restaurants, much, much better...don't miss it!

Alot of places aren't accepting walk ups anymore. If you don't have ADR's then you won't be able to eat there. I also agree with the other posters that the wait time could be long. We generally have to wait 20-30 minutes even when we have ADR's.

My family really likes Teppanyaki but personally I wouldn't do walk up with such young kids with early bed times. A long time ago when my kids were 3 and 6 we really wanted to eat at Ohana so we took a later reservation than we should have. Our kids were so tired they hardly ate, DS spilled his drink, and DD wouldn't participate in any of the fun activities. It wasn't their fault, they were just young and tired. It was hard for DH and I to enjoy the experience.

If I were you I would pick a different restaurant and get an early ADR time so you can all enjoy the experience more.

When my kids were younger, that was their favorite restaurant. We have done it several times, and the only time we had a problem was when we got there after 8pm.

If you decide to try, I would get there early. They will give you a little pager, so you can go and walk around the Japanese Pavilion for awhile. My kids always enjoyed looking at the Japanese toys in the shop below the restaurant.

Just plan for an alternative if it's not available.

I agree that it is overrated and overpriced. They have an 'attitude' there of we are booked every nioght so we do not care. They do not take the DDE card. When we went last time they stuck my 2 yo on the corner of the table (not a real seat) we had no room to move and he could not rach the table to eat. They did not seem to care and would not move us.

This place is usually mobbed. I would guess that you will not get in.

I wouldn't recommend Teppanyaki anyway. I agree with most of the other posters here that it is way overated and very expensive. I have eaten at many different Japanese steakhouses and this one was by far the worst.

If you want to eat at a Japanese steakhouse, there are many other choices near Disney which will be less expensive and serve better food.

My dh and I ate there on 2/15/05. We arrived at 4 o'clock and were seated imediatley. We thought the food was awsome!

We've eaten there our last two trips (10/05 & 12/04) and were not impressed with it at all. It was very blah, nothing to write home about. I love Japanese food, but as others have said, Teppenyaki is very overrated and overpriced!
