No Request was too Extreme: A Post-Deployment Disney Trip *Completed

Delilah is already SO busy and she's only crawling, not walking. So I'm already thinking our October trip is going to be the most challenging one yet! She will be 14 months old. Reading these posts and picturing myself chasing after a toddler is making me exhausted already!! lol

Oh man, Via Napoli!! I dream about that pizza. I'm with Alex on the desserts. None of the ones at the restaurant grab me. I'd rather get the gelato cookie sandwich from the cart outside!

I don't comment on a lot of things but I've been silently following your trip report but when I saw this suggestion for the Kebap I had to comment.... this is a must! I did a German exchange in high school and I think I ate one of those every day. So So good.

I've lurked other reports you've done and I think this is the first time I'm commenting.

This trip looks awesome so far and I'll keep reading for sure!

Gotta love toddler energy. My youngest is currently 18 months and he's just nonstop! And nothing like his older sister. It was much different taking him to Disney at this age versus our daughter at 2.5.

Thanks for reading!

Evie is more laid back than Landon ever was, so I'm hoping she'll be a little easier to deal with at Disney when we go back. Landon went to Disney at 14 months, 16 months, 20 months, and 22 months and they were tough! I think if I had to do it again, I would have just waited until he was older. They are just so much energy at 1!

Best wishes for your new adventure in Germany! When you venture into the bigger cities, Berlin for sure, try a doner kebap! I still dream of them. It's like a gyro but a bit different. At least with the European train system you can travel pretty easily. I loved that. Then I tried Amtrak here - yeah no. (Not east coast)

Looking forward to reading more! So glad you got your family together in your dream resort!

I've actually seen a lot of doner restaurants around! There's one that's been highly praised about 20 minutes away from me, but I haven't managed to try it out yet. I'm pushing it to the top of my list now, though! Once I do, I'll come back and say what I thought.
I just have to pick one I think I'll like. Alex and I have tried this Italian restaurant next door and every single thing I ordered was just MEH while Alex's dishes were amazing. I have terrible menu picking luck!

I know, for me, the hardest trip we took with Landon was when he was 14 months old. He had just mastered walking and didn't want to be carried anywhere. It was a lot of chasing him around. I hope for your sake Delilah is a little easier! Maybe since she has Paxton, she'll want to follow him and/or sit next to him in the stroller.
One can hope, right?

Now I don't feel like such a wierdo about the kebaps! I stayed in such a small village when I was there that I forgot they had them in the more populated areas. I was in southeast Germany very close to the old border with east Germany.

A doner food truck opened near my husband's office a couple weeks ago but the toppings were all wrong so that squashed my jealousy. Must have white and red sauce - must!

Munich was my absolute favorite - the glockenspiel is magic at night.

My son did well at Disney a month ago, but he did get overheated because it was Orlando in May. It didn't help that he destroys stroller fans. Three park days - two new stroller fans destroyed by day three.

Sorry you had food envy at the Italian place - that is the worst!

Okay, Alex and I had some friends take us to a popular doner restaurant last night. And they were amazing!!! Alex and I raved about them the whole way home. I don't know what kind of sauce/garnish they put on it, but my goodness, it was tasty. We can't wait to go back. You guys were completely right about them!

Florida in the summertime is rough on kids. They get overheated so easily, and it's not easy to keep them hydrated if they don't want to drink.
Wow...stroller fans are no match for your son! That's crazy.

I can't wait to visit Munich! It's on our list.

February 27th, 2015 Part 4:

After our lunch at Via Napoli, Alex strapped Landon into his stroller and we began walking back towards the Norway pavilion. Since Alex hadn’t ordered dessert at lunch, we needed to get him something sweet to munch on, and the Kringla Bakeri has always been a winner in his book. Plus, the long trek over was just what Landon needed to give up the good fight and go to sleep.

Alex emerged from the bakery at met back up with me (where I was doing laps with the stroller) with a Viking Chocolate Mousse.

f1 by Alicia Wolchick, on Flickr

I had a bite, and it was really good.

Without meaning to, Alex and I have started this mission to try all the snacks at Norway. We’ve had the School Bread many, many times as well as the Troll Horn, and my personal favorite the Kringla Sweet Pretzel with Almonds.

Basically, if you’re in the World Showcase and have a hankering for something delicious, I couldn’t recommend the Kringla enough. :goodvibes

While Alex took over stroller duty and ate his dessert, I stepped inside the Stave Church for a peek around. It was really crowded inside, and there was a huge congregation of teenagers blocking most of the exhibits, so I didn’t get to see much.

f2 by Alicia Wolchick, on Flickr

I left shortly after snapping that one shot; it wasn’t worth my time to constantly tell the same folks, “Excuse me, pardon me, could I just squeeze in there for a sec?” Not when I had a sleeping child waiting for me outside.

You don’t squander that kind of opportunity in an exhibit.

At least not alone you don’t.

I left and rejoined the boys, and we set off towards Canada, stopping to shop a little in the stores along the way. Alex and I didn’t have a set plan in mind, one of our favorite things to do in Epcot is simply wander through the pavilions and try and find something we’ve never seen before. The World Showcase is one of those places that we always swear we’ll try and spend more time and yet never do, so we figured if we tackled the place a little at a time that’d be better than nothing.

And that’s precisely something we cannot do with kids that are awake, so what better time to take advantage of that easy going exploring?

When we made it to the Canada pavilion, I suggested we do something super risky.

“Why don’t we go watch the movie? We’ve never seen it before, and I think Landon far enough gone that he’ll stay asleep.”

Alex was skeptical, but he figured I knew what I was talking about and agreed to go.

f3 by Alicia Wolchick, on Flickr

We made it about 5 minutes into the film before Landon started stirring in his seat and got to be so loud we had to rush out of the theater.

Dumb decision on my part.

I knew better than to do that, but I had a moment of Disney weakness and my judgment lapsed.

Landon had only been asleep for about 45 minutes by that point, which was certainly not a long enough nap. Alex and I had to start power walking through Canada and into the UK pavilion to try and get him back to sleep. If he woke up then, we’d have a miserable and cranky toddler on our hands for the rest of the afternoon.

It was on our mission that we discovered the back garden area housed in the UK pavilion. It was absolutely gorgeous, and the perfect spot for pushing a stroller.

507643

507644

So perfect, in fact, there were two other parents doing the exact same thing.

We were our own little Nascar race, all going in one big circle, passing the slower walkers, making pit stops to change out parents…

Alex and I each took turns on stroller duty while the other went and looked in the shops. We’d never been inside before, had never even seen the Winnie the Pooh meet and greet area, so it was fun to browse the shelves and examine the different teas and pop icons for sale.

507645

When the two of us felt safe slowing the stroller down, I asked Alex if we could go check out the fairly new (at the time) ice cream shop in the France pavilion. I had read Dugette’s trip report about getting a snack there, and I remembered joking with her that if we were ever in Disney at the same time, we were going to ditch the kids with the husbands and go split an ice cream there.

So for tentative taste purposes, I needed to try one out prior. Just to know what flavors I wanted, of course.
:rotfl2:

L’Artisan des Glaces had a pretty impressive selection of ice creams available, and the smell of the shop when we walked in was heavenly.

507646

The most touted about item on the menu was the Croque Glace: choice of 1 ice cream flavor in a warm brioche with a chocolate or raspberry sauce warmed and sealed.

I’d heard nothing but rave reviews about the dish, so Alex and I picked the mint ice cream with chocolate sauce and took our snack to an empty table to eat.

507647

The ice cream itself with the warm chocolate sauce was phenomenal. I could have eaten a pint of that stuff. However, the brioche itself just wasn’t to my liking. It wasn’t that it was bad, I just didn’t enjoy the flavor of the brioche, and I felt it took away from the ice cream. I think if I were to try something else from the shop I’d go for a macaron sandwich. It was also extremely messy to eat. Near the end the warmth from the sauce completely melted the ice cream, and it was dripping from all ends. We were very grateful we had baby wipes with us to clean up our hands once it was finished.

Right about the time we were disposing of our trash, sounds from the stroller started making their way to our ears. The kiddo was awake.

Alex wanted to make our way back over to Future World in order to take Landon on an attraction he would enjoy, so we got the boy out and let him walk with us out of the World Showcase.

No sitting in the stroller. If Landon’s eyes were open, he felt his feet should be on the ground.

I was able to see some more topiaries along the way.

507648

As well as several Disney birds.

507649

507650

One of the best parts of the Flower and Garden Festival, the flowers in the water, were already out and on display, giving me the chance to enjoy them as we walked.

507651

Epcot doesn’t get much prettier than that.

507652

It was already 3 o’clock in the afternoon by the time we passed under the monorail ramp. Where had the day gone? It certainly hadn’t felt like we’d spent that much time in Epcot. It was like we blinked and half our day had vanished.

I hadn’t even gotten on an attraction yet!

Time to remedy that.

Up Next…Divide and Conquer

Like you I had heard rave reviews about the Croque Glace and my fiance and I tried it when we were at Epcot in May and I was so disappointed. The pastry part just seemed stale to me. I'm glad I tried it but I will stick to my cronut with soft serve on top!

It's funny how things change when you go to Disney with kids. Spending huge chunks of time without doing an attraction is suddenly the norm! But it's nice to spend some time wandering and discovering World Showcase. We did that on our trip in May, and it's not something we usually do. I found that garden area in UK and hadn't even thought about that being a good stroller napping spot!! I'm keeping that in mind for October.

We almost got that brioche/ice cream thing from France, but in the end we had both spotted other treats we wanted instead.

YES, those flowers around the water and under the monorail track...just gorgeous!! Seeing pictures of that precise spot is what made DH and I decide we wanted to visit for Flower & Garden for the first time ever.

Ah, the challenges with a sleeping child and how to not wake them up but still not just do nothing ... I've spent many an hour in the car in the driveway with a child asleep in the back

Too bad you didn't get to see the Canada movie but sounds like you got out of there in time to remedy the situation

We were our own little Nascar race, all going in one big circle, passing the slower walkers, making pit stops to change out parents…
- haha, I can totally see that ... and the other parent with a water bottle to keep the "driver" hydrated without having to stop, etc.

So I must admit we loved the Croque Glace - but it was super messy, especially with the heat you can get in EPCOT

I enjoyed mine, but more for the trying-something-new aspect vs. I'm-getting-this-every-trip. I also didn't really have problems with melting messiness, to my (poor) memory, as I was wolfing it down before the rain started and I didn't finish (was full and rain came). I'm totally onboard with our hypothetical meet being to share macarons too. :goodvibes

I agree that I think the pastry was too stale.
I have tried the cronut before, but I'm not a big sugar and dough fan. Just too sweet for me. However...I think I'd like it a lot more with soft serve. Everything's better with ice cream.

Before kids, Alex and I spent all our time in the parks riding rides; we never would have imagined going to Disney and not trying to get on all the coasters. Now, though, if we do 3 attractions, we consider that a win. I think the World Showcase is easier to wander around if you're the type of person who enjoys snacking and/or browsing. I'm good with looking in the shops for a little while, but too much time in them and I get antsy. (Unlike, Alex, that kind of afternoon is right up his alley.)

Those flowers on the water are almost iconic to me. It's one of the first things I imagine when I bring Epcot to mind.

Now that Evie's older, I've also discovered the challenges of keeping the older child quiet so as not to wake the younger one. I wish I had a dollar for every time I've told Landon, "Go play with your train/puzzle/cards until I put Evie to sleep....I'll give you an episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse if you stay quiet for the next ten minutes."

I'm not a huge fan of messes so I'm sure that had something to do with my overall opinion on the dessert. Fortunately, there are a lot of other treats at the shop I'll get to try.

I think that's the same flavors I got. :goodvibes

See, we even have similar dessert preferences. Perfect dessert sharing buddies. :rotfl:

I think our next trip would be sometime in 2018, probably in the summer or the holiday break. We'll probably go back around then to visit family before Landon starts kindergarten. The thought of waiting 2 years for a Disney trip just baffles me; I'm still trying to get used to not living 6 hours away from the place. :rotfl2:

Caught up... but way behind on commenting. Nice day in EPCOT despite the lack of attractions. I'm glad you at least had a chance to check out the displays in the Stave Church since it has been replaced by Frozen now, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm late joint but really enjoying your report. Thank you to you and your husband for his service. I'm so glad you had this nice relaxing trip together. Landon is so cute and has so much energy. It's been a long time since I had a little one at Disney so this is all new to me. My youngest was 3 the first time we took her. The Poly is my dream resort too. Maybe someday. . . . I think Epcot has the best snacks. I could use all my snack credit there.

I understand what you mean by that one special trip. We had it last year when my middle child got married at Disney. I haven't posted a trip report in years but really thinking about doing one just to relive it.

Looking forward to more.

That looks amazing!!!

You know, I had the schoolbread once and it did not blow me away. I LOVE coconut, but the pastry I got seemed stale. I would definitely give this a try.

I'm glad Landon gave you a little break, but too bad about the Canada movie.

That is seriously funny about the stroller "races" in the UK garden.

Cute display with the Mickey shaped ice cream balls.

Mint + Chocolate = YUM!

I totally understand, would never have expected a comment, but I appreciate it. I do think you're right and the Stave Church is now Frozen land.

Landon has always been a big ball of energy! We're constantly looking for things to do with him to get him tired enough to sleep!
I could easily go on a Disney trip and just eat at Epcot! So much there to choose from.

A Disney wedding, yeah I bet that was pretty memorable! How amazing!

If you get a stale one, they are pretty boring. But when you get one that's fresh and has a lot of that cream filling...it can be mighty tasty. Although, as a fellow coconut lover, this dish doesn't have an overwhelming coconut taste. It's so understated that my anti-coconut husband eats it.

Mint and chocolate is probably one of my favorite sweets combo!

February 27th, 2015 Part 5:

The next item on our agenda for our Epcot day was some stuff Landon would enjoy.

One of the most important aspects in vacationing with a 1 year old; ALWAYS pick stuff he would enjoy. Setting yourself up for failure, otherwise.

Figment has always been a hit with Landon, so that’s where we were headed.

508197

508198

As it turns out, Landon actually liked the queue better than the attraction. The screens were far more interesting than Figment and the imagination lab. Of course, neither of the two could compare to the exit area with its light up floors and music machines. Landon ran around so fast that Alex could barely keep up. He wanted to dance in circles, then he wanted to hit the piano keys, and then he was determined to take off to the gift shop and pull all the plushes off the racks.

We were only too relieved when the kiddo had ran out of new and interesting trouble to get into and booked it for the exit.

508199

Run, run, run!

What was next?

508200

Oh, more running? Okay, then.

We let the speed demon drag us around for awhile longer, then we steered him over to our final Fastpass of the day.

We’d met Pluto earlier in the morning, it was time to say hello to the rest of the Fab Five gang. (Minus some ducks…)

The Fastpass line had about a fifteen minute wait, but the time passed quickly. There was a sweet mother and daughter in front of us and a group of adults directly behind. The four guys and girls had a kick talking to Landon and asking him if he was excited to meet the characters. It sounded like they were just beginning their trip and were embracing their child side. I only wished more guests were as fun loving as they were.

Alex and I were a little apprehensive about letting Landon meet Mickey and Co. after how shy he was with Pluto, but we didn’t want to waste the opportunity. After all, it’s not every day you get to meet those cool friends.

So, what ended up happening?

508201

Well, I wouldn’t exactly put the occasion in the WIN column…

If I bury my head in Dad’s shoulder like an Emu in dirt, then maybe Mickey can’t see me.

Goofy got eye contact, at least:

508202

Alex handed him off to me for Minnie Mouse in the hopes that maybe he’d be more comfortable in my arms. (Huge downside to deployments: the little ones tend to gravitate to the parent that didn’t leave for a few months after the military parent returns. Landon was still in that phase during the trip.)

508203

Minnie Mouse worked a smile out of Landon.

However, that was about it. I asked him if he wanted to get down, and boy oh boy, did he start clinging to my jacket for all he was worth. That was a resounding no.

Once the meet and greets were over, Alex and I had a small debate as to what to do. We had both gotten our fill of Epcot (for the day, you can never be completely done with the park) but where we went from there was the big question.

Alex really wanted to go to Disney Springs to check out the new shops. (Way back then they were new, at least.) However, my early pregnancy body was kicking in and I was feeling a little under the weather. I was listening to my body and knew I needed to rest and re-energize myself before the following day’s adventures.

What to do, what to do…

“Why don’t we split up? You take a bus to DTD, and I’ll take the monorail back to the Poly with Landon.”

The suggestion was completely foreign to us. Alex and I had never gone on our separate ways for any length of time while at Disney before. I can only recall two times. Once, was when him and his siblings had to rush to use Test Track Fasptasses so they left me to enter Epcot and shop alone. That was only for about an hour, and that was no different than all the other times we’d taken turns riding coasters.

The second time was when I took a nap in our room at Pop while Landon and Alex explored Art of Animation.

I don’t even count that, though, because they were a stone’s throw away. I could’ve texted them and they’d have been back in five minutes time.

This…this was totally new and foreign to us. And it wouldn’t have been a big deal except Alex was a little worried about leaving me alone to deal with Landon and the stroller and all the items in the storage bin.

It took me the entire walk from the Fountain of Nations to the front of the park to convince Alex to go.

It was still gray and dreary out as we left the park.

f1 by Alicia Wolchick, on Flickr

I knew Alex would be bored silly sitting around in the room, and it was going to be hard for me to relax with him prowling around, all antsy and cooped up. And while I’d never actually used Disney transportation alone with a toddler before, I knew I’d be fine. The fantastic thing about staying at the Polynesian was the fact that I only had to hop on and off a few monorails to get to my final destination. No folding up the stroller to get on a bus, no buckling Landon in a car seat to drive anywhere. Disney did all the work; I simply had to manage keeping the boy in his seat for the short trip home.

Alex finally gave in and took a bus over to his shopping nirvana. I did just fine getting Landon back to the room.

I might or might not have walked right past our longhouse when we got to the Polynesian.

It was so conveniently located that I messed it up.:rotfl:

Oh well, who doesn’t enjoy walking around that resort for a bit, anyways?

Back in the room, Landon settled in with the Timon and Pumbaa safety guidelines on the tv. My kid can’t be the only one who loves to watch that, right? Meanwhile, I set up shop at the desk and fiddled around on my laptop for a good while.

508205

I was also texting back and forth to Alex. He was doing me a huge favor and was buying my mom a gift from me.

Vera Bradley had just released some gorgeous bags in a hot pink color. They had subtle Mickey heads on the outside and one of the bags was large enough to carry an Ipad in, which my mother had been saying she needed since she had just gotten one for Christmas a few months prior. (Which is coming in handy now that I’m here in Germany. FaceTime is our best friend!)

My mom had done so much for me while Alex was deployed that I wanted to get her something nice as a thank you, and my husband was gracious enough to pick one out and buy it for me.

Hey, I took care of his son for 6 months…it was the least he could do.:rotfl2:

Around 6 o’clock, Alex was finished with his shopping and ready to head back to the Polynesian, but I asked him to stop by Earl of Sandwich and grab us some dinner before he left. Unfortunately, the bus ride took much longer than he anticipated, so it was after 7 when he finally arrived with the food. Landon was more than ready to eat!

508206

After the meal came bathtime and bedtime.

That was it.

Nothing left, right?

That’s what I assumed as I sat in bed and put Landon to sleep.

But then we heard it.

The unmistakable sound of booms in the sky.

:hyper::hyper:

Wishes!

I yelled at Alex to throw back the curtains so we could see outside.

And what greeted us?

508208

We had a beautiful view of the fireworks! Right from our very own room!!!

Best

Trip

Ever.

I'm exhausted just reading about Landon's energy. That's a lot to keep up with.

It's funny how toddlers respond to characters. You never know what to expect, I'm glad he warmed up to Minnie a little.

Good for you, braving Disney transportation alone with a toddler. Doing it on a monorail was the best way to do it.

I think my middle child got the same bag as you got your mother on our last trip. It's just so perfect and so cute. I think she got it at the Disney store at the airport in Orlando.

I love Earl of Sandwich! I'm sorry it was cold by the time it made it to you. But seeing Wishes from your door was the perfect ending to the day!

Joining in! Your room at the Polynesian was epic. Also, that photo of Landon in the stroller w/ the mouse ears and glasses (your avatar pic) is truly the sweetest picture! Looking forward to reading more!

Just found this TR and am all caught up. It is great so far and I cannot wait to read more. Huge thank yous to your husband for his service!

Following here! Just binge-read your trip report, what a great trip so far. :D Like others have said, thank your husband for his service to our country.
