Hi everyone! I'll be visiting aulani/Oahu in may with my friends, but we are only 20 so renting a car is extremely expensive and maybe even impossible as the age limit is usually 21-25.

We want to visit the north shore for just 1 day, what would you say is the best way going about this? Should we just splurge on the car rental underage fee from hertz? (If there are other car rental companies that rent to 20 yr old please let me know)

I've officially ruled out taking The Bus as that might take hours.

I'm assuming you'd only want to rent the car for the one day? Alamo is the onsite car rental place at Aulani, so if you need to rent from Hertz, you'd also have to figure out how to get there and the cost of that as well.

You could look at taking a taxi. You can easily get a cab from Aulani and have them drop you off somewhere in Haleiwa, near Matsumoto's or an area that has a lot in walking distance. It's about 30 miles from Aulani to Haleiwa, and the taxi fare estimator is showing about $100 cab ride if metered. So $200 round trip. You may be able to negotiate a flat rate, or even find a sedan service for a flat rate. It would be pricey, but not sure how this compares to the fees you'd pay with the car rental company.

I would look to see if the on-site Alamo would rent to <25. A one-day rental plus an <25 fee split amongst friends might be the cheapest way to go. I'd also look into touring companies. Looks like Aulani offers North Shore excursions for around $100 pp.

or Uber/Lyft...but really an excursion is the way to go. A car/taxi can get you in and out of Haleiwa, and you will be able to walk to everything in the town. However, you won't see what you are thinking of when you say the North Shore: the famous beaches, the shrimp trucks, etc. https://resorts.disney.go.com/aulan...ies/excursions/aulani-north-shore-experience/

thanks for the advice everyone! i think i will stick to renting the car. like ehrawn said i want to see the beaches, food trucks etc that i believe will be most convenient if we rent a car.

According to Oahu Revealed book, both VIP and Paradise will rent to younger folks. I have no personal experience but they may be worth checking out.

I think you are smart to rent the car, it is really different up in the north shore area and we always find we are longer than we planned to be just because we are enjoying ourselves so much. If you are tied to an excursion, you might find you want to stay longer and cannot.
