No raised seal on certified. birth cert?

I sent away to the SC Office of Vital Records for my sons' birth certificates. I requested certified copies. I waited 2 months and One child's came today. The thing is: there is no raised seal. There is what looks like a red stamp and it says something about 'examine under black light for authenticity.'

Has anyone run across this? Think the immigration people at the ship will give me a problem?

I may get them passports anyway-that's what DH and I use, but $120 is a lot of money for their passports for one cruise.

That's a good question, as long as it is an "official" seal you should be alright. Maybe some other South Carolinans that have cruised can help. This may turn into another if you have any concerns you should get a passport. It is the safest, but can understand the issues. The fee is $70.00 per child now. Don't forget both parents have to be present to apply if you choose to do so.

I can't believe it -- I had the SAME thing happen a few months ago with Florida! I sent for my birth certificates -- two certified copies -- in October. $39.00 later, I finally got them in February, and there is no raised seal. I called them and I got a woman with an incredibly pompeous attitude who told me that that's the way they do it now -- it goes through the printer like that and the official seal is good enough.

I was so concerned about whether it would be accepted, I might have to take my old beaten up original one. Then she proceeded to tell me that for another $29.00, I could write to the Jacksonville office and get a certified copy from the Governor. I thought that's what I paid for the first time!

When I took it to the Motor Vehicle last month to renew my license, they questioned it and said the seal was not prominent enough. But I don't want to pay $90.00 for a passport right now!

Although you may have this info already, the page has an email link at the bottom. You may want to email them, and inform them what the certificate is for. You may get a better answer.

Another idea would be to call DCL and ask about it, as I am sure they deal with FL certificates all of the time.

As long as it is a certified copy of the birth certificate you will be just fine. We just used our kids birth certificates last week (in my haste I forgot to pack their passports but thankfully had pre-packed their birth certificates) and they are small credit card sized and laminated in plastic and they weren't even looked at twice.

All U.S. and Canadian citizens must travel with proof of citizenship, which is a valid passport, original, state-certified birth certificate and picture identification, or a certified naturalization certificate with a picture identification.

We are in Georgia and my brother misplaced his birth certificate so he went to get a copy of his. You have to look very close and at an angle to see the raised seal. It's on multi-colored paper, kinda like a watermark. It says it is an original. It sounds like most, if not all, states are doing them differently now.
