No prescription drug coverage!

I take 3 generic drugs, none of which are optional. They are simvastatin 10 mg, ranitidine 300 mg, and omeprazole 20 mg. I used to get them all filled via mail order for the 90 day supply and would like to keep getting the scripts filled 90 days at a time if I can without prescription coverage. We live in a rural area and it is a drive to the nearest pharmacy.

Simvastatin 10 mg isn't on any $4 list that I'm aware of. It isn't oppressively expensive but it isn't $4 either.

Ranitidine 300 mg is on Wal-Mart's $4 list - $4 for 30 pills or $10 for 90 pills.

Omeprazole 20 mg is over-the-counter Prilosec. In almost all cases, without insurance, it will be less expensive to buy over the counter.

I would suggest searching online for prescription discount cards. There is no guarantee of how much money it will help you save, but it is better than nothing. Sometimes the discount is zero and other times it is pretty substantial, depending on the drug.

And as a PP suggested, call around to local pharmacies and ask specifically about the simvastatin. I don't think it should be more than $25 a month but I haven't priced it out in awhile. In the absence of any other option, you could explore an alternative statin with your physician. Pravastatin and lovastatin are both on $4 plans (at least certain strengths are) - for my money, I would choose pravastatin, but that is just me.

Great News! Called Sam's Club and Wal-Mart to get prices. Then I called our local grocery store that recently put in a pharmacy. I explained that I no longer have any insurance for prescriptions and wanted 90 days supplies if I could. Then he asked if I had the county discount card. What? I explained I am not eligible for any county program (thinking Medicaid). He said, no, this was just something the county did for people without insurance, some kind of savings program. No eligibility requirements. So, he ran my scripts under the program and here is the bottom line:

All 90 day supplies: Simvastin 10 mg. $21.82; Omeprazole 20 mg. $19.07; Rantidine 300 mg $11.94

WOW! That is cheaper than over the counter! Yes, I could get the Ranitidine for $1.94 less at Wal-Mart, but why would I drive 1/2 hour to save that little?

Calling the doctor's office now to write out 90 day scripts.

I know the $275 seems expensive, but that's about right for insurance these days. I would have kept it.

As of January 1st, I have no prescription drug coverage for myself. DH and 2 DS's have both been switched to Medicare Part D (DS's are disabled and DH is retired). We dropped our private insurance as it was $275.00/month plus a 20% co-pay. Anyway, now I am looking to fill my generic medications, but cannot find any site where I can compare the cost of these drugs I take. All I can find is the cost within an insurance plan, which I don't have. I have checked out Wal-Mart's $4 drug list, and only one of my meds is on it. I just want to have an idea of how much these will cost me to refill. I used to have the 90 mail-order scripts with the old insurance, but can't do that anymore for obvious reasons. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

If on medicare retirement I have Humana PPO and have it taken out of my social security check and the cost is determined by your area (mine is $49.00 a month on top of the $99 to medicare) and have had now for four years and it pays all that medicare does not. Now on precriptions some name brands with out generics cost more. but all in all really like it. You can do mail order but I prefer not to.

I don't have prescription coverage at this time and my Dr. recently gave me a prescription for Celebrex (no generic) because even though it's a lot like ibruprophen, he said it was easier on the stomach. I went to get it filled (at Target, but probably would be the same at most pharmacys) and asked how much without ins. and they told me $276.00 for one month She actually said, "Are you ready for this"? I said, no thanks, will take my chances on Motrin. They are really out to stick it to those without prescription ins. who need the best rate the most

I was on Celebrex for years with great results until my insurance denied it due to cost. My doctor changed it to Meloxicam Tab 15mg (Mobic Tab 15mg) and it works pretty well. Its a generic so its really cheap!
