Going back in 2013, and I want to eat at Kona and CCooks, and Ohana even though we won't be staying at the Poly, but I read rumors that they will be shutting the place down in 2013. Yikes. So bummed. Is it true?

Don't know where you are getting these rumors, but I have heard absolutely nothing about closing the Polynesian resort.

There are such rumors - closing the resort for a total refurb. It's been being discussed on the Tikiman site for a few months - since his last trip there in the fall, I think it was. Just rumors though - no facts. Certainly nothing I would even think about it until it was announced.

I'm betting though something is up with it. I'm sure Disney wants to put a DVC in there somewhere. But can you imagine how much higher the prices of the rooms would be if they did do a total redo of the Poly. They are astronomical now, but with complete new construction. Yikes. But, back to the topic, I want to eat there in 2013. Dang gum it.

They are already building a DVC at the Grand Floridian. There are no current plans to build one at the Polynesian.

There is no current way to confirm as this is just a rumor and there is absolutely no official corroboration by Disney.

I can't imagine shutting down an entire resort and all their dining options. It seems like that would be a huge loss of income for Disney...

they don't shut down entire resorts, they do one building at a time or like with the contemporary, one floor at a time. The only time an entire resort was shuttered was after 9/11 and they shuttered the carribean beach for awhile but that was mostly do to the low attendance at the time. taking one enitre upscale resort out would be very costly for disney indeed especially when its designed around long houses, also the restaurants were all upgraded and redone about 4 years ago. and as far as dvc goes, there isn't room at the poly for dvc unless they took over several existing long houses.

I love the poly the way it is. I hope they don't do anything to it exept maybe a gym and a hot tub.

Total rumor. However, I have heard about it from several different sites...could be bits & pieces of something forthcoming, or whisper down the alley!

The rumor is that due to the structural issues with GCM, and water issues with several of the longhouses, the only way to correct the problems is to pretty much tear it all down & start from scratch. I can't see that being feasible...but you never know...

Tikiman does seem to have a few "ins" there & has great info on his site. Could be all made up though too!

I think it would be awful to have to tear down the resort or drastically renovate because we all know it would be done cheaper.
The buildings with the huge rooms would all be smaller. One of the fun quirks is to find out which building you are going to end up in since they have so many differences in size, bathrooms, locations etc. That would end.

I will be very bummed if this rumor and the rumor about the Cali Grill both being closed for the better part of 2013 are true (we were hoping to do a splurge trip at a Monorail resort in April of 2013 but will probably not do it if all of the Poly restaurants AND Cali Grill are closed during that time).

I realize there are still good dining options at GF and WL, but IMO, part of the fun of staying at a Monorail resort is being able to eat at least one nice dinner at each of the 4 resorts closest to the MK. If I'm going to fork out the $$$$$ to stay at a Monorail resort, I want to have the full experience.

I suppose the new Be Our Guest restaurant in MK will provide a new dining option not currently avaliable but this doesn't make up for 'Ohana, Kona and Cali Grill all being closed at the same time (and I have my doubts that it will be as good as any of them, instead, probably more like a second CRT).

It hasn't been that long since some renovation were done on the main building, so have my doubts there would be any changes there now and they didn't shut down the restaurants then. Now, it's different story for Cali-Grill - have heard from many sources and several cast members-servers that it would be closed, completely renovated and almost assuredly coming back with a new name - but still upscale - so that is probably true.

As PPs have mentioned, this is all just rumor right now. Nothing about a Poly renovation has been announced by Disney at this time. But my understanding is the GCH does have major issues that might not be able to be addressed while the GCH is still being used. Speculation is it would be cheaper and faster to tear it down and start over. And it would be difficult, if not impossible, to operate a resort with the main building where the front desk and all restaurants reside out of commission for an extended period of time.

I cannot fathom them completely leveling the Poly including all the longhouses and starting over, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it closed and while the GCH undergoes massive rennovations.
