That sound you heard was a busy signal. It means that I was already talking to someone on the phone. No, I don't have call waiting, and I'm not going to get it to appease you. I'm not going to click over to another call while I'm talking to someone; I feel that would be rude to the person I'm speaking to. So if you get a busy signal when you call, call back later. Thanks.

ITA!!

You know, DH and I have found it necessary to cut out a lot of unnecessary expenses. The first things to go? Call waiting and Caller ID. So not necessary for us. The next thing to go is the answering machine. If I don't answer, I'm not home. If it's important, call me back later. I'm enjoying the return to a life with fewer intrusions.

:lmao: My son called a friend once and thought he had dialed a wrong number. He just told me "I got this weird sounding noise" to which he hands me the phone since I wasn't sure if he misdialed and got the "your call can not be completed as dialed" high pitched sequence they use (considering I'm still known to forget to dial 1-area code... on occassion). I just started laughing when I heard the busy signal.

The funny thing is we don't have call waiting EITHER but I guess he was so used to things going to answering machines or it just ringing forever that he had no clue what a busy signal was.

I told a teen volunteer one day to make a long distance call using my long distance pin code. I explained that she would hear a "fast busy signal" and then enter the number. I've never seen someone's face go so blank so fast.

Thats hilarious! :rotfl2: Jo

Almost all Cellphone have free voice mail! Kids these days are so connected, half the time they text rather than actually talk to the person!:confused3

I'm right there with you. When I "upgraded" to Comcast it apparently came with call waiting. The first time I heard the high pitch beep I didn't know what it was as I never had it - I think it is rude to interrupt a phone call. I promptly called them to cancel the call waiting and the lady thought I was nuts!

You know, you can choose whether or not to take the other call, or not. With caller ID, you can see before picking up if it's a call that you need to stop what you are doing to answer it. Call waiting allows you to take a relatively unimportant call and still not miss the very important call.

These options truly are value added features.

I couldn't live without call waiting.

But that being said, I don't feel the need to be reachable all the time either. I don't have voice mail set up on my cell phone. If it's that important, you have my home number, or my work number, or my husbands cell number.

No call waiting or caller id for us either. No intention of getting it.
The buttons on our phone are wearing out and I have been keeping my eye on new phones, but all the cordless models have a caller id screen, which I think looks bad and we wouldn't be using anyway...

I wish I could undo the call waiting on my cell phone. I will never answer it, so it is useless.

I didn't think that I would ever want call-waiting either until we were trying to sell our house several years ago. I was on the phone while the realtor was trying to call to set up an appointment. I guess that I was on pretty long because when he showed up, he said that he had been trying to call for over an hour. He asked if he could show the house. It was a mess but I let them in anyway. The very next day, I called and had call-waiting added to our line.

The couple that saw the house as a mess ended up putting an offer in 2 days later. The husband loved our screened in porch and the wife loved another house. The other house sold the day before so they choose ours. Had I not let the realtor in that night, we might still be living there. ;)

We also have caller ID that I don't think that I could live without now. Even though we're on the Do Not Call List, we still get those calls. It's nice to be able to ignore them and not worry that we missed an important call.

I always check the caller ID before answering the call-waiting. If it's a doctors office or school, I switch over.

I'm not calling you back because there is a three hour time difference. I'm going to bed. You can call me back tomorrow but I know you won't because you are too cheap to call long distance.

You don't have to answer the second line, really you don't. I have it and I love it. I recall while growing up that I needed to get in touch with my mom to let her know something, she was always on the phone, it never failed.

With three kids I insist o having it. I would hate to be on the phone having a long conversation about something and them need to get in touch wit me and couldn't. Also if I need to get a hold of them while I am out, and they are on the phone, they can tell their friend to hold on. Sometimes it is an emergency. One time DFIL had a stroke, I was on the phone with a friend hadn't spoken with in years, if I didn't have call waiting it probably would have been a couple of hours before we found out.

I do think it is rude to switch over to another call unless it is an emergency. Both hubby and kids know that if it is an emergency and I don't switch over to them, they just call right back and I know to answer the 2nd line. I would gladly give up some other form of technology before I gave up this one.

I don't understand why the attitude about call waiting. Sometimes needing to get through to someone is an extreme emergency.

With having 3 kids in school, I could not be without call waiting. What can i say,I enjoy my chats with my friends sometimes during the day. What if the school needed to get a hold of me, what if my husband had to get a hold of me for something important. Now a days you can see who is calling while talking, so you can decide whether to answer it or not.

But, for emergency purposes, I would never be without call waiting.

No, you misunderstand. I'm not too cheap to call you. I'm not calling you back because I'm sick of your self-important, holier-than-thou attitude. I have free long distance and plenty of roll-over minutes to use! I guess that's why we've drifted apart so much.

I know I don't need to answer it. But I find the clicks, beeps, whatnots that tell me there is a second call to be very distracting. They derail my train of thought, which bugs me. Background noise I can ignore. There's just something about the sounds right in my ear.

Anyone who needs to get me in an emergency has my cell phone.

Hey, I'm happy for anyone who has call waiting and likes it. That's great for you. As for me and mine? We'll pass.

We are never on our home phone long enough to even care about call waiting. We actually got rid of it. I hate when I call people and they put me on hold to answer another line, so why would I do it to others? It doesn't bother some peple, but it bothers me.

My kids teachers/school have our home phone #, my cell # and my husbands cell #. If it's an emergency, they'll call the next number.

In my house there are 'phone rules'. Many people don't have any 'family respect rules' set and that's where the problem comes- not with having caller ID...we do not answer any phone while we are sitting at the table eating all together. my husbands brother drives us nuts, because half of the time while he's eating with us or his own family- he's on the dang phone. Then, he complains about 'people always being able to contact him at all times'...IT'S CALLED AN OFF BUTTON!!!

People are too 'phone crazy' now days period!
