quoting from the Vacation Magic

"On a recent visit to Disney's SSR & Spa, I noticed a building called the Cinema. Will movies be shown at this resort?
There are no plans to show movies in the Cinema. Similar to The Spa at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort, Disney's Lake Buena Vista Golf Course, the Cinema and the Performance Center located at the resort are not operated by the resort of by Disney Vacation Club."

okay anyone else surprised by this?

if DVC is not running these things who is????

I'm not surprised. Both the Spa and the golf course were there prior to DVC building SSR so why would they be operated by DVC?

That's kinda surprising regarding the Cinema. Don't they hold the weekly DVC meetings in that location? Does that mean that DVC is paying someone else to rent the facility?

Why would someone want to own that Cinema--particularly if there was no intent to offer any sort of scheduled entertainment.

I could understand Disney/DVC wanting to wait until the resort grew further to offer any regular entertainment at the cinema, but the ownership issues just don't make any sense.

I read that too. It's really too bad.

I just think it makes sense for DVC to take over the whole property...not just chunks of it. LBV Golf is/can be an attraction on it's own...so maybe it makes sense to keep it separate. However, the cinema and the performance center buildings are a big part of the common guest areas of SSR. They should be an official part of it and should be taken advantage of. Why bother having a Broadway - "main street" area if there's nothing to do there?

The cinema and performance center are obviously owned by some part of Disney. It can't be that difficult to put them under the DVC umbrella.

I'm certainly no expert, but I think Disney did not think this through. I hope they have other plans for these buildings and they are not just going to sit there empty. While I do like it in its current form, SSR could easily be a *much* better resort with a few more unique amenities.

I read this statement and it stood out like a sore thumb. I was wondering why they even bothered to call everyone's attention to the fact that DVC isn't running the Cinema. Maybe they were getting questions from members?

The idea I had and still think it could be used would be for DVC to show Classic Disney Movies, not first run to compete with AMC. I think an easy way to get some prospective DVC members to take the 2 hours for a sales presentation would be while their kids are watching a Disney movie right there on site. Then in the evening, it could be used much like the campfire program is done at Fort Wilderness. And there has been talk of the need for an onsite childcare center, that would be it either supervised or not. I too am disappointed in what I read in Vacation Magic about Cinema.

I thought that was odd, too. Potential for problems? Who takes care of it then? Weird, right in the middle of it all.

I would love to watch classic Disney films onsite while on vacation!!!

Maybe there is hope for its future use :)

While "Spa" is part of the resort Theme and name, it is operated by an outside corporation (same with Grand Floridian Resort and Spa).

The Cinema, Golf Course and Performance Center have never been described as being part of the resort and are not included as part of the maintenance responsibility of the SSR owners. The LBV golf course has been there, independent of any resort, long before SSR or even DI. The Cinema and Performance Center were built and maintained as part of the DI. Both were poorly attended for their intended use. Whatever WDW entity controls these at this time certainly has some $$ arrangement with DVC to use the Cinema on a regular basis and, if special programs are ever planned (like what was offered at the Member events of summer 2003), I'm sure these buildings would be available for such events again and DVC would pay for that privilege.

In the meantime, I would think that SSR owners might be reluctant to have to purchase the structures ... AND ... assume the additional costs of maintenance/staffing responsibilities- even for something like evening movies attended by a few children for free. I'm sure if enough owners indicated the desire to assume extra (and ongoing) expense , Disney would be willing to consider such a move.

Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it! :smooth:

Disney classic movies are all locked in a vault. Have tried to look for a classic movie on DVD lately? Only a few are availible until they get put in the vault.

I would love to see a movie night, even if they charged a buck for members, they would make a killing on popcorn.

$1 cost of popcorn equal $40 profit.

Yes...nightly popcorn proceeds alone could pay for operating expenses and maintenance!

I'll wait to pass judgement on the resort amenities until details about Phase III are announced. Since they are supposed to start building in the Spring, I'm hoping we hear something soon.

FW campfire program each and every night - shows old Disney movies - generally the animated ones.

those were the ones we were talking about showing at SSR.

so if you want to go see a Disney movie and don't mind seating on the ground - just go to the campfire program - it is pretty neat for it does!!!!

The LBV Golf Course is operated by owned and operated by Disney Sports Attractions, the same division that runs the Wide World of Sports. The Spa is owned by WDW Hospitality, the same division that owns all non-DVC WDW resorts, but is is operated by an outside company. The Performance Hall and Cinema are owned and operated by Disney Event Productions the same people responsible for the Convention Centers as well as the World Showplace at Epcot.

I was told by my guide that the reason they didn't show movies, was that they had an agreement with DD, and they want you to go to DD to see the movies.....

I then asked about the icky new boats (okw - ssr - DD). I said that the seats were uncomfortable.... no response, so sent an email to DVC.

and was told that they boats are too expensive to replace. I then sent another email saying I don't want the boats replaced necessarily, I'm just asking for the seating on the boats to be replaced.

So they do listen to us... but they just might choose to ignore us. I think a lot of people may have been requesting movies, and rather than say they want us to go to DD, threw this response out to see if it'll satisfy.

Peter thank you very much - but that is a very confusing system - well to me anyway!!!
