No More Straws At The YC

Because they are significantly more expensive, have problems with keeping integrity and don't work with some drinks (shakes, smoothies, etc) very well. It would be nice if they were consistent though and just gave us some alternative, even if not perfect. We're going through this same problem in Seattle. I tend to bring my own now if I know I'll need one.

I have to wonder if this isn't a ploy to drive sales of the refillable mugs. They have lids. Supposedly Disney is SELLING reusable straws. In this era of "The Stock price is the MOST important consideration" Disney, I can see them selling you a drink but there's an up-charge if you want a cup. Perhaps a CM will circulate around the the restaurant with a ladle and fill your mouth.

Sometimes the real motivation behind eliminating things because of the environment is that it will increase the profit margin for the company that is inconveniencing their customers. That "Save the Environment" hook is a great marketing ploy for Disney.

Toilet paper is "Bad" for the environment. Is that next??

The mess from the no lids is going to be epic. Housekeeping and janitorial services are already having trouble keeping up. Those lids are there for a reason. This is going to prove to be a problem.

And this is coming from a person that uses reusable straws at home. They should sell refillable mugs that are larger than the 4 ounce size that is currently available and put a carabiner on the handle so you can attach it to your belt loop. That will look totally fashionable. Imagine the hordes of sweaty tourists clunking along with their refillable mugs strapped to their hips. Don't worry though, there is still one more hip left to carabiner a roll of toilet paper to.

Speaking of handles remember when the geniuses at Disney decided to remove the handle from the refillable mugs? I think we know what the latest idea from this genius is...... no Lids/No straws.

Think of how much more money Disney could make if they eliminated forks and knives and made you eat with your hands!!! Yeah sure, soup might be a challenge but there is always that CM with the ladle!

Community ladle.... YUMMO! That will really set off the people who are triggered by the community soap dispensers in the El Cheapo resort rooms.

Yeah... I'm pretty sure at this point that there is a manager running around Disney saying "If we eliminate the chocolate coating on the Mickey Bars we can make 4% more profit and I can get that juicy performance bonus that's in my contract... SCORE!!!!"

It's really time for a change at the top in Disney management and a return to true Disney values. This squeezing the guest for more and more money has long past reached the stupid stage.

THis will be a huge issue in the parks. No real refillable mugs there to use!

In the resort I plan to bring a mug. I don't drink much in the parks, but I can guarantee that this will mean we will just end up drinking water with lunch and keeping the bottle to refill unless I can figure out something that will nto be too messy or awkward to carry around.

This is all about the $$$$$. They will be more than happy for you to bring your own straws. And like a previous poster said, will we eventually have to bring our on toilet paper?

The plastic straws and lids are not recyclable. (I cannot spell that word!) I am not a fan of the policy, however I think that there is more there than just saving money. Disney's efforts into sorting every bit of trash and waste are IMO commendable, and this policy, along with the reduction of plastic bags, is part of their commitment into conservation. I was in Aruba last December and you will nto find straws or plastic bags in very many places. No lids either. Paper straws are not a given, and many people are simply either bringing their own paper straws. Purchases in the stores I visited necessitated buying a cloth bag, or at times I was provided a small one free of charge.

I think that while this policy is not well managed yet, it is one that we will see more often as more businesses commit to using less plastics that are not able to be recycled.

Well there is no doubt that this may have a benefit with conservation, and that is great!!!!!! But you have to remember that Disney is doing this with a product that cost them money and not with a product, like those awesome balloons in the Magic Kingdom, that makes them money.

I firmly believe that if Disney could remove those balloons they would. There was a lot of complaints when we stayed at AKL because balloons are not allowed there, and the whining in DAK can still be heard from guests who want one. Can you imagine if the other parks had removed them? I would not want to be on the receiving end of those emails!

I am not wearing blinders in regards to Disney and their bottom line. They are a business, and as such they will make decisions that impact them in the least negative way possible. I am also not a fan of the new policy, I am one of the worst spillers in history, and cannot walk and chew gum, let alone walk with an open container. I am that person you all are talking about when you discuss drunks in Epcot. I am stone sober, but you would not know it if you are following me. I just do feel that in fairness to Disney we need to see this from their POV, and then find a work around.

Ninja Mom- While I was laughing reading your post, I then became serious again because I think you are right! Anything Disney can do to save $$ and squeeze more $$ out of us, they will do. And calling it environmentally friendly makes it sound magical!

Well written once again:thumbsup2

All that plastic from straws and lids ends up in the ocean because it doesn't recycle....plastic bags as well. Cigarette butts are also a problem. I applaud Disney for trying to do away with some plastics. You can always bring your own straws or reusable drink containers.

Fact 3: The 5 most common items found in coastal cleanups around the world are all single-use plastics. They are: plastic cigarette butts, food wrappers, plastic beverage bottles, plastic bottle caps, and plastic straws and drink stirrers.

WHile in Aruba we were on a snorkel trip, and the captain made it clear if anyone tossed a plastic beverage cup over he would be tossing that person in to retrieve it. He said they look like jellyfish to the sea animals.

Well there is more than just the balloons, but I will meet you half way and see your point here. You know I have never gotten one of the balloons in all my trips. But I really think the lid issue might backfire in their face. I no longer have any very small kids, but I can't imagine being there with a small child and no lids. But if you have no straws, you can't use a lid either.

As I said upthread, I am not a fan of this policy and think it is going to generate one big mess...literally.

My SIL was in a coffee shop- not in Disney and they had no plastic coffee stirrers. There were pieces of spaghetti instead. I will bring our refillable mugs next month in case we want a soda or iced tea. I am a grown woman, I rarely spill stuff but I still want a lid on my drink! My kids were big spillers so I can imagine the messes that will be.

Straws were on tap at the Beach Club marketplace this weekend, fyi. But regardless I now take straws with me everywhere when I travel. I like soda & I don't drink sodas without a straw.

Good to hear! Since I'll be at the BCV, I'll check there for straws before I head on over to the YC for foo0d. Or hopefully, since I'm also on an ECV and would, like others, probably spill without a lid/straw, they'll be provided for me.

I've been purchasing real toilet paper for the last few years when we make our trip to Publix. DisneyTP in the villas is paper thin and leaves road burns. It's nasty.

How bizarre. Spaghetti??? Why not just use wooden coffee stirrers? Those seem to be the most common type anyway.

Just so you know, Disney reverted their decision, and balloons are now allowed at the AKL since last year.
