No more smoking or vaping in the parks

Disney has reversed the smoking change.

"Due to overwhelming negative response from the public, we have decided rather than move smoking areas outside the park, We will examine better smoking area placement within the park so that non smokers are not affected adversely."

Well there you have it from the mouse's mouth.
That should make smokers less annoyed I guess depending on where they place them and at least some non-smokers happy if they just go to a strict enforcement. I know that was a major concern was people thinking smokers would just ignore it and smoke all over the place.

Where did you find this info?

I sure hope that is an April fool’s joke. If not, if they move the DSAs more out of the way in the parks, I’m fine with that too. But, I’m sure that won’t be good enough either b/c then it’ll still be too far.

What?? No they did not! Hahaha!!!

I still stand by that they should give a 6 month notice and it should be banned.

The End.

Love,

Me

This has nothing to do with April Fools Day, right?
Actually many of the guests had no idea until they actually attempted to use the service, only to find it unavailable. Disney didn't do anything to notify their customers ahead of time.

I wouldn't say Disney is customer oriented. But I do agree, visitors are definitely customers and not guests these days.
I mean they could have asked at check-in.
I read it was in the early '90s it was being limited. To what extent I didn't see it mentioned.
Yeah, I hadn't grabbed any of my reference books when I posted before. Based on the book, though, I believe DSAs are newer than 20 years.

Thank you sincerely for the realistic point of view! When I started smoking, way back when cigarettes are were still broadcast, the warnings were really mild "...May be hazardous..."

I've got no problem with older smokers, because they got sold a bill of goods. When the 80's rolled around and it became obvious they killed people, I really started having a hard time seeing friends my mine who just decided to start smoking. I just didn't understand the attitude. I mean, they started to, what, rebel against the CDC? Did they think cancer was Fake News?

Granted, I understand lots of sugar is bad for you too, and so is alcohol. And I consume both. So I'm kind of a hypocrite about this. Although one could argue that moderate alcohol consumption won't give you cancer, and may be good for you, um, depending on the study.

Good to know though around 20 or so years is still a long time for any policy to be put in place. Our world changes so quickly these days lol.

(Smacks self across forehead) Of course, now I understand. Research trips, book based on research, make travel arrangements, arrive at destination and it's the guest's responsibility to inquire -- Do the monorails still work, run, and what hours are they available? I see you've still got that Magic Kingdom park across the lagoon I've got tickets for, if I can find some means of transport to the other side, will this ticket still allow me entrance during park hours? Will I be able to gain entrance to the attractions during park hours?

ETA On one hand my response was exaggerated and hyperbolic specifically to make a point, yet on the other hand on second thought it actually isn't.

I've also read here about Disney abruptly cancelling ADRs people had booked. You know, the "ressies" that can be booked up to 180 days ahead, secured with a CC to insure the "guest" shows up? Well a restaurant could have an issue and need to close to repair something. Yep, but that's not behind the cancellations I'm referring to. Well maybe larger plans changed or nearby construction will require the restaurant to close down, maybe even permanently. Yep, that could happen too. But that's not what these cancellations were about. Nope, Disney decided well within the 180-day mark to close the restaurant to hold a private event. If I remember correctly it was inside 30 days when the information was released to guests.

If it's acceptable to suggest that a guest could book a resort, show up and be the one responsible to inquire if the monorail will be available as featured in their promotional materials for that hotel, everything planned about a WDW visit is indeed built on quicksand.

If my memory serves, by the first time I went in 1997 they had rolled out a no smoking policy for indoor areas and ride queues (even the outdoor ones) but you could still walk around the parks with a cigarette. I think that was still the case in 2005 when we went as a family for the first time, because I remember my husband ranting about inconsiderate smokers who were walking with lit cigarettes on crowded walkways (still one of his pet peeves b/c it "makes all smokers look bad").

You could be right on the 2005 part. I also went in 2005 but I can't really remember that sort of detail honestly. Mostly I remember still rockin' a fanny pack

I probably wouldn't remember either if it wasn't such a pet peeve of my husband's. To walk around somewhere like Disney (or a park/beach) smoking is to hold a glowing little ember at just the right height for over-excited kids to run/bump into it, and he was really surprised that Disney allowed it. He much prefers the DSA model, where smokers are out of traffic and parents know to keep closer rein on their kids.

Maybe not in Canada, but in NJ it sure was in the 70's. I started then despite being bombarded with the health risks.
It was known in Canada, in BC at least. My mum told her parents (my grandparents) that she was pregnant with me, and that if they wanted to see their grandchild, they would have to quit smoking because it was a major health hazard. This would have been 1976-77. According to the stories I've been told my grandmother, so excited to have a grandbaby, took all the cigarettes and destroyed them that day. Cold turkey. Never had another one. My mum had given them 7 months notice to do it, but apparently they quit that day. My dad did the same to his parents, it took them longer, but I think they were heavier smokers than my maternal grandparents.

April Fools, right?

Growing up in the 70's and 80's my dad was a chronic smoker who smoked whenever and wherever he felt like. Our house/car/clothes/hair etc. literally stank of smoke and no amount of washing would get it out. I grew up breathing second hand smoke and thinking nothing of it. Fast forward to 1997 when I had my dd, the grandchild my parents had waited over 10 years for. She was 2 months old and I remember picking her up from their house and her tiny pyjama smelling of smoke. He did not smoke around her but it was still there. Something snapped and I literally cut him off from his grandchild. I told him to stop smoking or to forget the baby as he would never again be in the same room as her. After 50 years of smoking he threw his full pack away cold turkey and has never again touched a cigarette. To this day, 22 years later, we tell dd that she indeed saved grandpa's life as I am not so sure he would be around today. It can be done with help or without if the willingness and the incentive is strong enough!
My parents did the same thing in 1977 to my grandparents. All of them lives into my early adulthood because of it.

After a hiatus from the boards, I came back to start the early planning stages of celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversary, just the DH and me and the GF. This ban is a 100% deal breaker for me and that stinks. Its a shame the rule breakers ruin it for the rule followers, and I place blame at WDW itself for not policing their own rules. Dang it. Looks like a NCL cruise for me and my honey.
