Just another thought from those of us who are very green and work hard to protect our environment.
Not everyone brings home the plates, so that is a lot of wastage as I am assuming that they are not recyclable. Also, not sure what type of plastic the plates are made of, but re-using them, although good for the environment, may not be good from a health and safety perspective. As well, the cost of these plates, is probably more than a paper plate, which is recyclable and will use less materials to make them. Plastic is not good for the environment at all.
It is sad for the company who makes and markets these plates, but from a cost perspective, these plates add little value to Disney's bottom line, so it makes sense for them to elimintate them. They have added recyclable and green napkins and straws at AK, so perhaps they are going to change the product to something that is more environmentally friendly as the Mickey plates are meant to be used once and disposed of. Sure they are cute, but I honestly can't imagine that picky kids (I have 4 picky nieces) are going to eat more or less depending upon what type of plate their meal is served on. If that is the case, then surely you can bring your own plates from home, since you have no problem lugging the Mickey plates around the parks anyway in order to bring them back home to re-use later.
Sorry that this is a hard change for some of you. I hope you and your kids are still able to enjoy WDW.
