No more Mickey kids plates

I'm not sure about health concerns in reusing them. We have been reusing them for several years. I throw them in the dishwasher and use them daily for my kids.

I can appreciate the "green" aspect, but I still will miss those little Disney touches. Will it impact a vacation, of course not, but we did enjoy them and will miss them.

I think if you don't make a big deal about the plates --
I don't think the kids will even know any better.
You would think that kids would be happy about
being at Disney not a shaped plate.

My kids just had their mac n cheese on those plates today. I aree that they are part of the "magic" of disney and such a cute touch. It just made it a little extra special. The plates bring back memories for the kids when they use them.

When those of you who bring them home are saying you 'collect' them, you are talking about disposable plates, right?

It is a thicker plastic. They might be intended to be disposable, but they are NOT disposable in appearance or the way they hold up.


To me, a disposable plate is paper. A plastic plate might be intended for one use by a manufacturer, but for me to throw away (or buy) a plastic plate, well, it's really really hard for me to do it.


The Mickey head plate/bowls (kind of like a spork is a fork and spoon, these are plate/bowls) are terrific and have held up VERY well, despite hubby putting them in the dishwasher with a dry cycle repeatedly.

Awwww man! That stinks! I do have a nice collection of them..... but I'm gonna miss those plates.

I hope nothing toxic leaches out of them when exposed to the extreme heat of the dishwasher - if they were meant to be used once and tossed, then they may not be safe for continued use.

I just have a hard time believing Disney is hurting for any cash, but this is sad

They have added recyclable and green napkins and straws at AK, so perhaps they are going to change the product to something that is more environmentally friendly as the Mickey plates are meant to be used once and disposed of.Tiger

I think you might have misunderstood me. They have added the biodegradable straws/napkins at AK only (unless this has changed in the last few months as we were there in May) - straws were never allowed at AK up until the change as the new straws are biodegradable, so there is less worry that animals can be impacted as is the case with plastic straws and lids.

You can bring your own straws to AK, but if you are seen with them, they will tell you to put them away or throw them away. If security sees them in your bag during bag check, they will take them away anyway. Same as with balloons - if you go to AK with a balloon, you must check it into Guest Services until you leave the park.

The paper straws at AK are actually really decent straws.

Much better than the paper straws from years ago that barely made it through your drink without colapsing, these hold up well.

But I loved those black mickey plates and clear covers to match! Bummer! And from a kid-standpoint, my son will not eat anything off his plate that has touched another part of his food. He even uses separate utensils for the different foods on his plate! I know he will grow out of it (his brother did) but it really made eating at WDW much easier - everything fit into it's own compartment! No arguements! This year ... there will be arguements ....
