They changed the story line on the Safari ride! Well, now there simply isn't a story line at all anymore! What happened to this?? No more poachers, no more jeep with Little Red being saved at the end......sigh...

I also miss the part where the bridge felt like it was going to collapse. I just hate change in general! At least they didn't dare take out the Hapa Duniani song halfway through. I love that song!!

I miss seeing the bloody carcass of the mother elephant when you were getting out of the truck.

That's not a joke, they really had a bloody elephant carcass at the end of the Safari! But too many children were traumatized by seeing a dead elephant after seeing so many real elephants running around. The kids didn't "get" that the dead elephant was fake. So Disney removed the dead elephant animatronic.

I think it would say something like "....help me......help me...." as blood dripped onto the ground.

Wow-I don't remember that at all! I don't go to WDW enough, so I miss some of these things.

In 2007-9, the trucks were extended with an extra row of seating, allowing for more capacity. Also, the safari script/story, along with the Wilson/Jobson story has significantly changed. There is less of a story about "Little Red", and more about the animals in the reserve and the need to find a lost elephant at the end. This led to a somewhat confused plot in which guests are searching for a lost "mother elephant" and eventually find her baby which, according to the story, had already been safe the whole time.

We were there yesterday. I'm so glad it was just about the animals and loved the information shared rather than the goofy poacher story.

Me too. I understand the need to inform guests about poachers, but not on a safari. There is so much that can be discussed in regards to the animals we are seeing. I do think that information is important and can be shared without a story line that actually detracts from what Disney has worked so har to promote. Animals.

I'm sorry but that seems messed up for a safari ride
I thought so too. I know what Disney's goal was, but Holy Uncomfortable! I did not like any of that storyline and was glad that my DGD, who was very young, missed most of it.

More late breaking news.........."If You Had Wings" is no longer in Tomorrowland!!!

Haha.....Now that's a ride I miss! We don't have the luxury, like you, to go to WDW all the time. So, when something changes, I genuinely would like to know what happened.
I remember going on that with my dad and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. He passed away, but those memories I hold on to and they come alive when I'm there.

"But -- truth be told -- Kilimanjaro Safaris has never really played as well as the Imagineers had originally hoped. Which is easy to understand. Given that -- just weeks prior to the April 1998 grand opening of Disney's Animal Kingdom -- Disney execs ordered the removal of one particularly gruesome setpiece from this attraction.

What scene am I talking about? That moment in Kilimanjaro Safaris where your ride vehicle was supposed to just happen upon the enormous corpse of Little Red's mother, Big Red.

The way I hear it, the children of cast members (Who were visiting DAK as part of that theme park's Cast Member Only previews which were held back in early March) just lost it as soon as they saw that enormous fake mother elephant lying dead in the grass. These kids then cried loudly all of the way back to Kilimanjaro Safaris off-load station. Which (obviously) was not the reaction that the Imagineers had been hoping for as the action-packed finale of this attraction got underway.

Of course, the more sensible of you out there are probably already asking: "Why the hell did the Imagineers put a big bloody fake mother elephant corpse next to the Kilimanjaro Safaris ride track in the first place?""

Probably for the same reason that the Jungle Cruise has featured a pride of lions gnawing on a bloody zebra carcass since 1971. My guess is that the Imagineers didn't see much of a difference.
