No more ladies night.....

Gee, I wonder if this will lead to our paying the same for a haircut as a man (when that's all that is done, cutting the hair) and the same for dry cleaning of shirts as a man (when the only difference between the shirts is the direction in which they button).

Women have been overcharged for those two services for quite some time.

I agree. Gender based discounts should be abolished. Call them something else.

Gender based overcharging should be abolished too.

So women (mostly college students) can't drink for free, get drunk and be taken advantage of by the predatory men who frequent ladies nights. Exactly what is the down side?

not nec. a bad thing re the drinking, but when the discussion leads to other discounts being looked at as discriminatory and are discontinued - that was more what I was thinking.

As I understand it, the reason for the price disparities between men and women for haircuts and dry cleaning is because, in general, it takes longer to cut womens hair, and women's garments are more likely to need special care (due to the fabrics). It's not always the case, but often enough that a price disparity can be justified.

(For similar reasons, men pay more for life and auto insurance, and women used to have to pay slightly more for health insurance. I think the new health care law mandates that women and men pay the same rates for health insurance though.)

I don't t hink a woman paying more for a hair cut is discriminatory. Generally, it takes longer for a woman's hair cut. You are paying for the stylists time.

DBF and I take our clothes to the same dry cleaner. It costs the same for his clothes as it does mine. I didn't know anyone charged different for men or women's clothes. I don't see a problem with charging less for a cotton dress shirt versus a silk blouse. The silk is more delicate and should be handled with more care than the cotton shirt.

I don't buy the "slippery slope" argument in this case. I live in a college town and free drinks for women has been banned in my state for over 15 years. The bars still offer drink specials to all patrons and stores still offer senior discounts. Just the free booze is gone.

The place I get my haircut charges the same for men and women if they are getting the same services. Most women get more then a standard haircut and if that is the case they should pay more. If they are getting the same exact service taking the same exact amount of time I think you are right, they should be charged the same.

Shirts are treated equal at the dry cleaner I go to as are pants. It doesn't matter the gender of the owner.

The senior discounts I look at differently because we all have an equal chance at obtaining them by simply living long enough. You aren't precluded from the discount because of the gender you were born.

I don't drink so whether or not they offer ladies discount drinks or not doesn't effect me but I think no one should get preferential treatment based merely on their gender regardless of what that gender is. That preferential treatment includes paying a different rate for the same product based merely on gender.
