No Longer coming to you Live from Disney World! Take 3 DDW'S TAMBU LOUNGE 8/6

So... Barb asked me awhile ago to post a synopsis of our December trip and what I found to be the high and low lights!

I figured today was a good as day as any to get this posted as it is ONE WEEK till I am getting off of work and will be heading to the airport! :cheer2:

Let me start with the most positive thing about this trip. Meeting everyone!!

I had the pleasure of meeting Brenda and Emily previously in Disneyland but on those meeting we usually only had time for a meal or a ride or two as it was always weekdays when I was down there and for some darn reason Brenda always had to work! :lmao:

So it was Fun spending time with Brenda and Emily again at WDW where we got to spend a lot more meals together and also a lot of park time!

We had a great time getting pictures on my last night after the Christmas party ended as we made our way out of the park!

This is one of my only ones with Rachel even though we dined with her quite a bit!

This trip was great in that with other people along Hunter was willing to do more in the parks! I am hoping the same holds true for my upcoming trip! Either that or Brenda and I will ditch the guys and go do stuff ourselves :goodvibes

But... on to the food...

We had one AWFUL meal and unfortunately it was both a service and a product issue for Hunter so he has deemed never again to return to KONA. I know for many this is a favorite but for us we have had bad or slow service on all of our visits and the bad Hollandaise sauce was just the nail in the
coffin.

We also had a server issue at Biergarten which has put that on my husbands Kill list as well. I am hoping he will change his mind at some point as I really like the food there!

Onto the good! and I think the rest was ALL GOOD! With the exception of a few slow servers. I'm looking at you Tea Room and the Yachtsman. I think for the most part these were just REALLY SLOW services and at the Yachtsman it wouldn't have even been an issue if we hadn't been on a time crunch.

Some of my favorite meals were.... Almost all the rest of our dinners!

We had a great experience at Flying Fish, Citrico's, delicious food at Yachtsman, and California Grill remains as our absolute favorite.

The steak I had at Flying Fish was awesome. I would skip the fish though as it is just too blah for me... I think it needs some spices!

ry%3D400

Hunter also loved his Pork dish.
ry%3D400

At Citrico's we shared our entree of my favorite dish there... The Short Ribs!
ry%3D400

The short ribs there are absolutely delicious. I prefer them over the Troffie pasta but the gnocchi were good as well!

At Yachtsman despite the slow service our steak was outstanding! The only thing we hate is the way they cut it there!! But we managed to fix that ourselves so we were both satisfied!
ry%3D400

Then there is our Favorite Restaurant. California Grill. We have become good friends with the Sous Chef there and he treats us well. We weren't sure if this would carry over with a group our size but it certainly did!

To start Chef Eddie treated everyone to a mushroom risotto. This was SO GOOD!
ry%3D400

Hunter and I usually share appetizers here because they all sound so good!

This time we went with something new. The Pate Flatbread
ry%3D400

This was quite good. I thought there might be a bit more Pate on it but it was enough to tell it was there without being overpowering.

For our second appetizer we went with what quickly became a favorite during our October trip.
The Pork Belly Nigiri!
ry%3D400

We truely love this! Unfortunately we had forgotten to convey that it needed to be made in the Sushi Paper instead of Nori... I can't remember if they remade it or if Hunter just pulled it off.

For our Entree which we shared we went with the Bison Center Cut Striploin with celery root puree, Chanterelles, Fig Bread Pudding, and Madeira-Fig Demi Glaze. This was delicious! It was a good thing we had each had an appetizer or I would have wanted more!
ry%3D400

After watching Wishes from the observation deck we contemplated dessert. Although CA Grill is not someplace that we actually contemplate much of anything for dessert as Hunter always tells Chef Eddie "Surprise Us!"

And then the "Platters" of desserts came out
ry%3D400

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

A blurry group photo from this meal.
ry%3D400

And one with Nancy, our server, who did a FABULOUS job!
ry%3D400

Even though there were 7 of us at this meal with 5 different checks there was not a delay at all in getting things settled.

Overall it was a great trip! A bit too short in my mind but fun nonetheless! I am excited to be returning to WDW next week with Barb joining us for many more dining events and her Birthday celebration and Brenda joining a day later with her husband Michael to celebrate her birthday which was a few days ago!

If you would like to find out more about our dining plans I've outlined most of them in my PTR with a link in my signature!

The theme for today's post (inspired by DeeDee's great review - see post 1916) is the magical experience of dining at Cinderella's castle...

Though it's lunch time now for me, at Cinderella's Royal Table it is time for breakfast. ;)

emmebear's Menu from March 2014

First you are presented with a Pastry Plate, which used to look like this...

But now looks like this...

Pastry Plate as of March 2014 (Photo by emmebear)

Patty said, "They got rid of that hard cold biscuit and replaced it with a Mickey blueberry muffin. Emme loved it!"

The Adult breakfast entree choices include...

TRADITIONAL BREAKFAST (photo by Mindy2k3)
Scrambled Eggs, Sausage, Bacon, and Rosemary-Lemon Roasted Potatoes

Mindy2k3 said, "Three girls had the traditional breakfast. They all liked it."

Stuffed french toast, that used to be...

Cream Cheese-stuffed French Toast drizzled with Cognac chocolate ganache
Served with bacon and fresh fruit (strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry)

Ginamarie said, "This was nothing like French Toast, but decadent and rich and delicious! Also the fresh orange juice was amazing!"

Then was changed to its current version...

Caramel Apple Stuffed French Toast -Decadent French Toast stuffed with sweet Cream Cheese, baked with Caramel Apples, and drizzled with a Calvados Caramel Sauce

JustEmmy said, "We both ordered the stuffed french toast with cream cheese filling, baked apple, caramel sauce and raisins. I didn't like the chocolate version of this at all, and compared to that one, this is alright, but it's nothing incredible."

Rarity's DSis enjoying her French Toast

HEALTHY CHOICE

Castle-made Granola, No-Sugar Added Walnut-Sunflower Bread,
and fresh Fruit

ses1230 said, "It was good and large! I couldn't finish it. The eggs were a little salty but overall it was delish!"

The Steak and Eggs entree used to be this...

STEAK AND EGGS

disneydivamama said, "DH liked the frittata. Said the steak was fine, but nothing spectacular."

But now is this...

Grilled Beef Tenderloin with Feta and Egg Custard, Garlic Spinach, and Blood Orange Gastrique

Patty said, "There was about 2 oz. of sirloin (not filet like last time), a weird creamed spinach on top of the fake round egg and some really weird blood orange gastrique that didn't even match any of the flavors. I was so incredibly disappointed."

Lobster and Crab Crepes - warm cheese-filled crepes topped with spinach, sauteed lobster, and blue crab meat with a poached egg perched on top and draped in Hollandaise sauce

budafam said, "This was SOOOO good! I am a huge seafood fan and loved this so much. Finally a really, REALLY good breakfast in WDW!

And last this entree, which used to look like this...

BAKED QUICHE
Goat Cheese, Spinach, and Mushroom Quiche with a dollop of Goat Cheese Cream served with Rosemary-Lemon Roasted Potatoes tossed with Arugula - - Photo by disneydivamama

disneydivamama said, "The quiche was decent. The potatoes were cold and hard."

But now it seems that it is baked in a puffed pastry rather than the usual pie crust...

Not a breakfast person...well, how about lunch?

Lunch menu from Aug. 2013 (Photo by Gin0818)

First is the...

Chef's Tasting Plate (as of Aug. 2013) - Cinderella has instructed her Royal Chef to create a selection of "Specialties of the Castle" for your enjoyment
- Photo taken by Gin0818 -

Gin0818 said, "I had the Chef's Tasting Plate, it was cheese, hummus, bread and flat crackers plus a salad with strawberries, goat cheese, and balsamic dressing. The cheese and hummus were good, but I'm not a goat cheese person."

One of the lunch entrees is always some type of salad. I've seen Grilled Chicken or Tuna Chopped Salad, Panzanella with shrimp, and some of the current online menus show a Beef Tenderloin Salad. Unfortunately, none of our live reporters ever tried the salad so I have no photos available. If anyone has a photo, please feel free to post it. :thumbsup2

Then there is always a Vegetarian option, which on the more recent online menus is Rice and Roasted Vegetables but last summer was...

Gnocchi with Roasted Vegetables - Eggplant, Mushrooms, Onions, and Squash topped with Gnocchi, Arugula, Pesto, shaved Romano, and splash of Aged Balsamic

SwirlyGirly said, "My mom ordered the gnocchi. She said it was very flavorful."

And in Dec. 2012 the Vegetarian option was this...

Hearty Tomato Risotto with sauteed seasonal vegetables and roasted tomatoes topped with a salad of herbs and garnished with a splash of aged balsamic

grrrlennyl said, "This was so good! A bit tomato-y, but the salad on top (with edible flowers) cut that heaviness."

The next choice seems to be a signature entree which always appears on the lunch menu...

Major Domos Short Rib, slow-cooked in a Pinot Noir Demi-glace on Potato and Parsnip Puree

Gin0818 said, "The taste was good but the piece of meat was very fatty. I couldn't even eat half of it because of this."

Then there is a pork entree which is now Slow-roasted Bone-In Pork Loin according to the online menus, but in Nov. 2012 was a...

Grilled Pork Chop with Apple Chutney, Mashed Potatoes (subbed for the Sweet Potato Puree), and Swiss Chard

Patty said, "This was very good!"

And in Summer 2013 had been changed to this...

Pork Sandwich - Tender Pork on crusty Ciabatta Bread, Apricot Barbecue, Broccoli Slaw, and House-made Pickles

Next on the menu is a Chicken entree, which is currently a Pan-seared Chicken Breast served with Israeli Couscous but in Nov. 2012 was this...

Grilled Chicken Pasta - Grilled Chicken Breast, Artichokes, Sun-dried Tomatoes, Spinach, and Crimini Mushrooms tossed with Pappardelle Pasta and a Light Cream Sauce, garnished with Prosciutto "Bacon"

Patty said, "My friend said the chicken was rubbery. The noodles were cooked perfectly though."

And by Summer 2013 had been changed to...

Oven-Roasted Chicken Breast with Farro Wheat Risotto, Wild Mushroom and Leek Ragout served with a Stone-ground Mustard Jus

Last is the Fish entree, which at one time was Grilled Snapper (sorry no pic) but then was changed in Summer 2013 to...

Pan-Seared Cod with Meyer Lemon Butter, Tomatoes, Quinoa, and Basil drizzled with Minus 8 Vinegar

SwirlyGirly said,"I had the cod. It was served with heirloom tomatoes and quinoa. At first I wasn't sure if I would like it. The quinoa was loose and floating in the juice of the tomatoes. I loved it. The juice had quite a bit of vinegar in it, which was to my taste."

Next up are the desserts...

In Nov. 2012 they offered these two options (photos by emmebear), along with a Pumpkin Cheesecake...

Flourless Chocolate Cake with a White Chocolate Custard

No Sugar Added Lemon Sorbet garnished with Blueberries

And here was the third choice...

Pumpkin Cheesecake topped with candied pecans and a drizzle of cranberry sauce
- Photo by Alice BlueBonnet -

Then by Summer 2013 their Signature dessert had replaced the Flourless Chocolate Cake on their menu...

The Clock Strikes Twelve - White and Dark Chocolate in a tribute to the moment when Cinderella loses her slipper

Gin0818 said, "This was amazing and looks cool also."

And SwirlyGirly had this for dessert during her lunch in July 2013...

She said, "For dessert we a had the cheesecake. It was gluten free and crust less. It was more like a pudding than cheesecake, but very tasty!"

But DisneyFam09 & family had a special dessert prepared in honor of her DD's 7th birthday...

DisneyFam09's DD with her grandparents

And speaking of DisneyFam09's DD, here is a photo of the Kid's Menu she was presented with during their July 2013 lunch...

Note: The Kid's Dinner Menu seems to be the same as lunch.

There are two Kid's Appetizer choices...

"So what's for dinner?", you ask.

Dinner Menu as of Sept. 2013 (photos by seasidespences)...

For dinner you receive...

Rolls & Butter (photo by seasidespences)

Your appetizer choices include...

CASTLE SALAD
Mixed Greens, Apples, Cucumbers, and Candied Walnuts topped with shaved Romano Cheese with a hint of Herb Vinaigrette

Brenda said, "Since I chose the "castle salad" that states on the menu has a hint of herb vinaigrette that's exactly what it had - barely any taste or flavor. Blah!"

And in May 2013, this was the other available salad option...

Endive Salad with Craisins, pear, blue cheese, walnuts and Minus 8 vinaigrette

Nicole (AvasMommy526) said, "The salad was pretty good, I love bleu cheese crumbles so that was a plus."

But by August of 2013, the second salad option had been changed to this...

Strawberry and Feta Salad with Arugula, Almonds, and Vinaigrette

Brenda (emmysmommy) said,"Em chose the strawberry/feta salad and she liked it."

Also available is this shrimp appetizer...

Crawfish and Rock Shrimp in a New Orleans-style Barbecue Sauce with Goat Cheese Grits

As well as a cheese plate...

Royal Tasting of Cheese - a trio of cheeses with accompaniments

Or another appetizer option is the Soup of the Day, which in April 2013 was...

Italian Pasta (photo by Hannikins)

Now on to the entree options (which are much the same as those available for lunch):

These include a Fish entree, which in May 2013 was...

Pan-Seared Cod with Meyer Lemon Butter, Tomato, and Quinoa Salad

RyMacJ said, "DH had the Cod, which he liked, but he didn't care for the sides."

While no one chose the pork entree for dinner, there were a few who went with the chicken. In September 2012 the chicken dish was...

Grilled Chicken Pasta - Grilled Chicken Breast, Artichokes, Sun-dried Tomatoes, Spinach, and Crimini Mushrooms tossed with Pappardelle Pasta and a Light Cream Sauce, garnished with Prosciutto "Bacon"
- Photo by Alice BlueBonnet -

Alice BlueBonnet said, "After meticulously picking out said mushrooms, Snow declared that her dish was divine."

But by August 2013 it had changed to this...

Oven-Roasted Chicken Breast with Farro Wheat Risotto, Wild Mushroom and Leek Ragout served with a stone ground mustard au jus

emmysmommy said, "I really liked this dish and if I hadn't tasted Em's tenderloin I would have thought it worthy of ordering again."

And speaking of the Beef Tenderloin (which I believe is only available at dinner), it seemed to be the most often ordered dinner entree.

Hannikins chose it in April 2013...

Beef Tenderloin with Duchess Potatoes, Asparagus, and a Chasseur Sauce

It looked a little different though when AvasMommy's DH Jeff ordered it in May 2013...

Sliced Roasted Beef Tenderloin with Duchess Potatoes, Asparagus, and a Tarragon Demi-glace

Nicole (AvaMommy526) said, "The beef was so tender, cooked perfectly, he loved the potatoes! He gave me his asparagus which you'll see on top of my dish, also great!"

Then when Em had this in Aug. 2013, it again looked much like it did in April... :confused3

Beef Tenderloin with Garlic Scalloped Potatoes, Asparagus, and Tomato Butter

Brenda said, " It was very good. I also had a bite and agreed that Em was 2 for 2 with her choices. It was served with scalloped potatoes that reminded Em of my version. She never said if she liked them or not so perhaps I shouldn't assume that is a good thing."

However, according to the current online menus the Beef Tenderloin is now served with Sweet Potato Hash, Mustard Greens, and Braised Apples.

But if meat is not your thing then there is always the Vegetarian option, which in May 2013 was...

Gnocchi with Roasted Vegetables - Eggplant, Mushrooms, Onions, and Squash tossed with Gnocchi, Arugula, Pesto, shaved Romano, and splash of Aged Balsamic

Nicole (AvasMommy626) said, "The gnocchi dish was wonderful! It was perfect, I ate so much yesterday but I liked it so much I kept going!!"

Appearing on the dessert menu for dinner only is the Chef's Dessert Trio, which in Sept. 2012 looked like this...

Chef's Dessert Trio (photo by Alice BlueBonnet)

Alice BlueBonnet said, "For dessert, Snow had the sampler. She liked everything, but said the cake was extremely rich and that she liked the cheesecake the best. Also, as an FYI the sorbet is not on the sampler, it is the cheesecake, the flourless chocolate cake and a small serving of the mousse."

But by Aug. 2013 it looked like this...

Chef's Dessert Trio - Lemon meringue tart, tiramisu, and a banana bread pudding with a caramel pecan topping

While their signature dessert remains on the dinner menu...

Clock Strikes Twelve Signature Dessert (photo by seasidespences)

...as does the No Sugar Added option (see Lunch post for photo of NSA Lemon Sorbet), the Seasonal Cheesecake changes...seasonally. In Sept. 2012, Alice BlueBonnet had the...

Pumpkin Cheesecake topped with candied pecans and a drizzle of cranberry sauce

Alice BlueBonnet said, "I had a full serving cheesecake and it was amazing. And I ate the whole thing ."

In April 2013, the seasonal cheesecake ordered by Hannikins was...

Hannikins said, "Strawberry Jam and Key Lime Cheesecake - didn't tasted any lime!"

By Aug. 2013 it had changed to...

Brenda said, "I tried the peach cheesecake and didn't like it so much."

And apparently they had this dessert available in Sept. 2013...

Wow Barb! That CRT re-cap was inspired! So many great highlights. Great job! :thumbsup2

Paula: Yes, ditching the guys is an option! :lmao: Just not on May 1st.

Brenda's Dining Highlights and Honorable Mentions
Shout Outs and So Nice to Meet Yous!

I can’t summarize the dining highlights without mentioning the other highlight of the trip and that is the new DISers that we met as well as spending time with other DISers for which we had already made their acquaintance. (Thanks Paula for the nice words in your summary! I’m glad we’ll be seeing you and Hunter shortly.) This particular group of DISers definitely made the trip not only worthwhile but memorable in so many ways.

The DISers that I had met before without their spouses were Linda and Paula. I had also met Vicki and her family in August 2012. It was great to see these ladies again and in the case of Paula and Linda to meet their husbands. I said in the very beginning of my dining reviews that these guys were hilarious and made for some great moments that threw me into giggling fits – fun times!

Now for the DISers that I had the pleasure to meet this trip – Rachel, such a sweet young lady (she could be my kid!), Patty and adorable Emme – we only had one meal together but at least we were able to meet briefly. I'm still impressed that Emme so tirelessly endured a 2+ hour meal at YSH with all of us.

We also had the privilege to meet Beth (Couchy) and her husband Wil (during part II of their trip.) and we shared my favorite breakfast AND dinner of the trip. I'm glad that Beth's travel dates and schedule lined up with ours since it was great to spend time with her.

And then there is the person that brought us all together and allowed us to take part in her live dining thread – Barb! I’m so glad that we were finally able to meet face-to-face and not just text each other. I will always remember her son’s birthday since it held a special meaning for me with my son’s Afghanistan deployment. I will also always remember that Sunday in November of last year when the tornadoes that tore through Central Illinois caused concern for her and her family. Luckily they were ok but having an eerie silence on the live thread for a few days was strange. And finally, I was fortunate that Barb was very observant of my dining reviews and sent me off on my August 2012 family WDW trip with a list of 18 things to accomplish. I don’t think either of us knew it at the time but my texts to Barb with some photos was a first generation version of the live dining thread. I feel honored to have contributed to these threads in some way over the course of the last year and a half. What a great way to stay connected to other DISers and to enjoy one of our favorite things! I’m honored to have met Barb and look forward to seeing her in 12 days.

It was also great to meet Barb’s Emily. Such a great young lady and I’m glad we had a few meals to share as well. One other mention here on the dining thread…. DisneyKidforLife (Rob) with whom we met up with for the Illuminations cruise, the Epcot Bar Crawl, and some time at MVMCP among other moments. It was awesome to meet as well! Truly.

Yes, there are DINING highlights to share….
So what about the food? Over the course of our 10 day trip, which included 22 dining experiences, there were a few that stood out and deserve to be mentioned once again. There were a few disappointments but they were either a service issue or a wrong decision on my part so I’ll summarize the positives.

What were my favorites? I’ll share by meal with a runner up or two since I may have had a hard time choosing and then the winner in the category. There were so many great dining experiences that narrowing it down is difficult.

Breakfast
Starting with breakfast, which I rarely miss and even less so on vacation since there’s the hope of Mickey waffles or a puffed French toast somewhere in WDW.

We had 8 breakfasts during our trip, Whispering Canyon Café, Crystal Palace, Kona Café, Kouzzina, Akershus, Grand Floridian Café, Captain’s Grille and The Wave. Unfortunately my favorite, Kona Café, didn’t make it into the top this trip because of the fail with splitting those amazing pancakes with Paula. They just didn’t deliver anything special by having plain pancakes with no toppings for which we were abandoned by our absentee server. So now that you know what I didn’t choose, what made it into the runner up position? Similar to Barb, the simple yet amazing French toast from Grand Floridian Café made this a solid runner up. I’ve been a fan of these since the first time I ordered them in 2010. In our 8 trips since I have not strayed from ordering this exact same dish EVERY time. I know, so boring!

GF Café French Toast
DSCN0829.jpg

These little beauties are also available at GF Café
DSCN0825.jpg

The real winner for the breakfast category was ……Crystal Palace. I had to go with this choice for a few reasons. The puffed French toast, Mickey waffles, more puffed French toast, and more Mickey waffles. Seriously, I’m in love with those two things. The made to order omelet didn’t hurt either. The Pooh and friends characters were a nice addition to this great breakfast buffet.

DSCN6640.jpg

Lunch
Moving on to lunch. We had 8 lunches as well; Chefs de France, Yak & Yeti, GF Afternoon Tea, Via Napoli, Liberty Tree Tavern, Rose & Crown, Plaza Restaurant, and La Cantina de San Angel. Looking back at these choices, it is hard to narrow it down since there’s not a stand out favorite.

However, let’s just say that my runner up was partly due to the appetizer that Vicki kindly shared and for which I can now say that I’ve tried the Scotch egg at…. Rose & Crown. That was good stuff! BTW, Yak & Yeti gets honorable mention for those delicious egg rolls.

Honorable mention Y&Y egg rolls

And let’s not forget those cream cheese wontons
DSCN6953.jpg

Scotch Egg at Rose & Crown:

And then there was the wonderful toffee pudding which I wouldn’t mind having every trip.
DSCN0316.jpg

My favorite would have to be a colonial favorite….Liberty Tree Tavern. Two reasons that this restaurant rated higher than the other choices…
1. The wonderful burger (who knew that anything would rival the tasty pot roast?)
2. Ooey Gooey toffee cake! Total amazingness!

Liberty Tree Tavern Cheeseburger. There’s no need to adjust your screen… Yes, we ventured from the delicious pot roast but it was Em’s fault for not being in the mood to dine on pot roast.

The ever delicious ooey gooey toffee cake
DSCN9556.jpg

DSCN9544.jpg

This was a great pre-MVMCP place to dine with fellow DISers!

Dinner
For the 8 dinners and 1 cocktail lounge with appetizers I did have a clear winner; however, I will need to announce a runner up alongside a runner up! We had so many amazing dinners it is hard to name only a favorite and a runner up.

The 9 dinner places were; Boardwalk bakery, Citricos, Yachtsman Steakhouse, California Grill, 50’s Prime Time Café, Territory Lounge, Teppan Edo, Shula’s, and Kona Café.

Of these nine places, the none too shabby runner up position goes to California Grill. This was a great dining experience made even better by the wonderful amuse bouche and the wonderful collection of every single dessert that the pastry chef created was brought to our table! However, as much as those were awesome, I loved the re-designed pork tenderloin dish. They made this even better by adding the pork belly yet they still retained the delicious polenta.

DSCN8193.jpg

The ultimate dessert collection! Or as Paula said, the “Surprise us platter”
DSCN8216.jpg

DSCN8217.jpg

My favorite was the same as last trip….It involved steak…and mashed potatoes….. and dining with Beth and Wil at
…..

....

....

....

....

Shula’s!
The 8 oz filet is the best thing a cow ever gave up for my dining enjoyment! I need to thank the cattle rancher that raised that steer/heifer.

DSCN1837.jpg

The 8 oz filet was sheer amazingness!
DSCN1821.jpg

And garlic mashed potatoes that were excellent!
DSCN1818.jpg

I need to mention the meal that I thought was the most fun of the trip even if it didn’t rank up there for the best food – although it wasn’t bad by any means. Between all the antics of our DISers group, minding or manners at the kitchen table, and interacting with our cousin Dave…. 50’s PT Café was the meal for which I probably laughed the most and had a great time. Seriously good fun and the food wasn’t bad either. I learned that yes indeed, there is a kids’ portion of the pot roast, not just the chicken dinner. Heading to MK for EMH after this meal was also a great memorable night.

50’s PT Café kid’s pot roast. This tasted better than it looks. Honest.

I’m looking forward to revisiting many of these favorites in the next few weeks. And even better, I get to dine at most of these places with Paula and her husband Hunter and Barb!

BARB - WE SALUTE YOU :thanks:

What a great job ladies!! So much info and wonderful insight. You are truly Disney dining pros!!

Sent from my iPhone using DISBoards

I am going to pop back in to do my summary of the trip although I know it won't be nearly as good as Barb, Paula's & Brendas!

For now I wanted to be indulgent and add a couple of pics to Barb's montage with some pre-thread pics ...

One of my favorite Mickey Bar photos from our December 2009 Christmas trip ..

And from our CRT Dinner on the same trip ...

Great job on your trip highlights, Paula & Brenda! I'm so glad that we will be revisiting some of our favorites together very soon. And thank you Vicki for adding your great photos, they are classic Disney!

So Paula's favorite meal has inspired the theme of my post today, as these live update photos are from her favorite WDW restaurant and mine...

You may have noticed that this is California Grill's old sign (prior to the major rennovations which took place there during most of 2013). Well, the reason for this is that the first live thread began in September 2012 so many of the California Grill reviews which I received were from before the remodel.

Let's begin with the last old CA Grill menu that I received prior to its closing on Feb. 1, 2013...

Menu as of Jan. 29, 2013 (Photo by Li Li)

And since this post was inspired by Paula, the next photo is from her dinner in Oct. 2012...

Notice the romantic message that Hunter made for her from the celebratory confetti on their table. They were celebrating their reunion, after being apart for 9 long weeks.

Then a photo taken by Nanabug02 of the Nov. 2012 cocktail menu...

From this menu Nanabug02 chose a...

French Martini (Skyy Vodka, Chambord, Pineapple Juice, and a splash of Roederer Sparkling Wine)

Another live reporter, sanapp, tried this cocktail and said it was tasty...

California Sunset
Crown Royal and X-Rated Fusion with a splash of Orange, Pineapple, and Cranberry Juice

Now on to the food, starting with the old bread basket with sourdough bread...

Then first on the menu are the flatbreads...

Triple Cheese Flatbread with Pecorino, Asiago, and Provolone, Sun-dried Tomato, and Arugula Pesto

This used to be their signature flatbread which was always on the menu. Then they usually had two or three other flatbreads which frequently changed. Of the other three listed on the Jan. 2013 menu, emmebear tried the Lamb flatbread during her dinner in Nov. 2012...

Lamb Gyro Flatbread with Handcrafted Gyro Meat, Feta Cheese, and Marinated Vegetables

Patty said, "This was flavorful but soggy. It was a very generous portion. I wish we had tried something else besides the lamb gyro. We were debating with the gnocchi too."

And Li Li and her DH tried both the Lamb Gryo and this flatbread...

Bacon Cheeseburger Flatbread with Wagyu Beef, Tillamook Cheddar, House-made Dill Pickles, and Florida Tomato Ketchup
- Photo by Li Li -

Li Li said, "I loved the cheeseburger, while Nigel preferred the lamb. (Sorry, we dove in before taking a pic!)"

And here is one of my favorite CA Grill flat breads that was previously available there...

Heirloom Tomato BLT Flatbread with Marinated Tomatoes, Applewood Bacon, Chiffonade Romaine, and Lemon Mayonnaise
- Photo by Smiling Cheshire Cat -

Rachel said, "Thanks for recommending this Barb. We really enjoyed the BLT flatbread. The bacon and tomatoes were sweet and the mayo was sour. A nice contrast of flavors."

Listed next on the Jan. 2013 menu were the Sushi offerings, starting with this one ordered by Beth & Wil...

Tuna Three Ways (Photo by Couchy)

Beth said, "We started with this. We both enjoyed it. The sashimi was the favorite. So delicious!"

Then skipping to the third sushi offering on the old menu...

Dragon Roll - Spicy and Tataki Tuna, Shrimp Tempura, Bell Pepper, Avocado, Chili-Soy Sauce

Nicky said, "My sister started with the Dragon Roll. This was very good, but a bit sweet for my tastes. I prefer my sushi spicy!"

Then we have the very popular (and one that is still available on the new menu)...

Spicy Kazan Roll with Crab, Shrimp, Scallops, Tuna, and Fireball Sauce

Candice said, "We loved the sushi, especially the spicy Kazan roll."

California Sushi Roll with Jumbo Lump Crab, Avocado, Cucumber

And the most impressive of all the sushi options...

Yoshie's Deluxe Sushi Platter with Maki and Nigiri (Photo by Candycane83)

Although these last two sushi rolls were never listed on the menu, they seemed to always be available upon request...

Shrimp Tempura Roll (Photo by Nanabug02)

Vegetarian Sushi Roll (Photo by AlohaPolynesian)

AP said, "I ordered an off the menu, chef's choice vegetarian sushi roll. I am used to the sushi I get back home - tiny little rolls usually. This was HUGE!!!!!! Filled with red pepper, tomato, lettuce, cucumber, and avocado. It was really good."

Now moving on to some of the Salads that were offered during the time period of Sept. 2012 - Jan. 2013...

Chef’s Garden Tomato Salad with Queso Fresco, Avocado, and Charred Onion Vinaigrette made with Original Barrel Minus 8 Vinegar

Nicky said, "For dinner my sister had the Chef's Garden tomato salad, which was good but not spectacular. The tomato salad I had the next night at Flying Fish was better!"

Heirloom Apple Salad with Pistachio Vinaigrette, Local Greens, Rogue River Blue Cheese

Maine Lobster Salad with Toasted Brioche, Avocado Dressing, and Watermelon Three Ways

stitchaholic said, "This had a nice piece of brioche bread and chunk of lobster meat, then a salad of lobster, capers, avocado, and pickled watermelon rind, with a round of watermelon. The sweetness of the watermelon rounded out the saltiness of the salad. It was an interesting dish."

And here was the soup that was offered when auntfrannie was there in Oct. 2012...

Creamy Roasted Cauliflower Soup with Petite Heirloom Florettes, Pumpernickel Croutons, and Smoked Olive Oil

And another First Course option which appeared on the Fall 2012 menu...

Handmade Potato Gnocchi with Wild Mushrooms, Edamame, Smoked Pork, and Organic Soft-poached Egg

Last are two First Course options which are mainstays of California Grill's menu (and can still be found on their current menu)...

Crispy Rock Shrimp Salad - with Florida citrus, red onions, soy reduction, and wasabi cream

As I'm out of time and have reached the 25 image limit for this post, the old entrees and desserts will have to wait until later. In the meantime, I'd love to hear everyone's comments regarding some of their old California Grill favorite starters...flatbreads, salads, soups, and of course sushi. Oh, and feel free to post photos too!

So I was sharing with Barb that October 2012 was not an Anniversary Celebration for us as our Anniversary is 2 weeks from TODAY! While doing that I shared with her a picture that WAS taken at California Grill during our 5yr Anniversary Celebration.

On that trip I had not made an ADR for CA Grill. At the time I had only planned that trip with 6 weeks notice. CA Grill was then and still is a hard ADR to get! However my husband when I asked him about meals for that trip... Really both of ours first time EATING at WDW. He said "Why would I want to go to a California Cuisine inspired restaurant when I can get that anytime here." So I proceeded with our plans not making an ADR for the restaurant that most people had declared tops for dining. On that trip we had been on the Deluxe Dining Plan for the first 7 days and not on a plan the last 3 nights as we had moved offsite.

On this particular day I did not have an ADR planned for dinner and Hunter had spent the afternoon in the Pastry Kitchen at the Grand Floridian. While there I had him ask them for recommendations for dinner. Well of course they recommended CA Grill. So we went to conceirge and they said. No, sorry, no openings... we can make you a reservation for the Wave. I said okay, I had heard the Wave was good as well. So we headed over to the Contemporary and I said, lets just check something.... I stop at the CA Grill Check-in desk and ask if there is any possibility of an opening. We were told sure, you can site at the Sushi Counter. Well we get up there and we were shown a regular table decorated with Confetti!

ry%3D400

We were also given complementary glasses of champagne and Hunter did his thing with the Confetti.

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

We did have one of the signature dishes that night....
ry%3D400

I'm glad the pork is still on the menu but even better than before as it includes one of my favorite food items ever! PORK BELLY!

So.. this improptu meal which my husband had not wanted to do because of "CA Cuisine" turned out to be fabulous and we were spoiled even our first time there!

Thanks Paula for your great Throwback Thursday post! I'm not sure if I've told you this already, but your dining report from that 2009 anniversary trip greatly influenced my dining choices for my 25th anniversary trip in 2010. :thumbsup2

So continuing on now with the Throwback theme, let's take a look at some of the entrees that were on the California Grill menu from Sept. 2012 - Jan. 2013.

Many of the photos that I have are of entrees which appeared on this menu...

Menu from Oct. 2012 (Photo by NoOrdinaryPrincess)

Let's begin with their signature entree...

Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Goat Cheese Polenta, Roasted Mushrooms, Zinfandel Glaze, and Sage

Robin said, "Tim had the pork tenderloin. He said (and I agree) that it was full of flavor and wonderful."

Next is their Filet, which is always on the menu but with frequent change to the accompaniments. For instance, shortly after the first live thread started in Sept. 2012 sarabear sent us a review of this Filet entree...

Oak-Fired Filet of Beef with Tillamook Potatoes, Blue Lake Beans, Bacon Vinaigrette, and Teriyaki Barbecue Sauce

sarabear said, "This was not as good as Le Cellier Filet or Yachtsman NY strip."

Then by Oct. (as seen by the menu photo) the sides served with the filet had changed to this...

Oak-fired Filet of Beef with Cheesy Potatoes, Brussel Sprouts, Bacon, and Teriyaki Barbecue Sauce

Beth said, "A 9.5/10 for DH's filet. It was perfectly cooked. Fantastic flavors. Overall it was excellent!"

But by January of 2013, here is the filet entree that appeared on their menu...

Oak-fired Filet of Beef with Buttered Purple Stokes Purée, and Citrus-glazed Carrots

Robin said, "Alex and I both had the filet. This is what Alex gets every time, so of course he loved it. I did also, but it was a little overcooked, which is not normal for CG."

Sadly I received no photos of the Roasted Carrot Ravioli, the vegetarian option that is listed on the Oct. 2012 menu, but I do have one of the entree which by December had replaced it...

Pumpkin Fig Ravioli with Spiced Winter Fruit Mostarda, Fig Pinot Noir Syrup, and Pumpkin Seed Sage Crumbs

AP said, "I ordered the vegetarian Pumpkin Fig Ravioli, which was delicious but very rich."

We have a photo of the next entree on the menu thanks to Smiling Cheshire Cat.

Jumbo Tiger Prawns with Creamy White Corn Tasso Grits, Fried Okra, Espellette Vinaigrette

This is followed on the Oct. menu by the...

Veal Chop with Creamy O’Henry Sweet Potato Hash, Wild Mushroom, Root Spinach, and Chimichurri

Patty said, "It was cooked a perfect medium and seasoned properly. The thing was massive, but very good. Thumbs up!"

Patty (emmebear) also reviewed for us the next entree listed on the menu...

Seared Diver Scallops with Zellwood Corn Risotto, Spiced Tomato Broth, Micro Popcorn Shoots

Regarding her friend's entree choice Patty said, "The scallops were cooked perfectly. Soooo good. The risotto was gorgeous! It was my favorite bite from dinner. Le Cellier should take notes on this risotto. However for the price, there should be at least 5 scallops."

Surprisingly none of our live reporters reviewed the chicken entree, however we did receive one for the fish...

Atlantic Swordfish with Cauliflower Puree, Chili Garlic Butter, Carnival Cauliflower, and Lime Gastrique

Beth said, "I ordered the swordfish with cauliflower puree. It came with a chili lime sauce and a garlic butter sauce, which I got on the side. This dish was incredible. I loved the lime sauce. Ahhhh." :cloud9:

The only Kid's entree which was reviewed during this time was the Grilled Chicken Breast. This was given negative reviews by both budafam's DD and emmebear's DD Emme.

Grilled Chicken Breast served on a bed of rice

budafam said, "DD wasn't too thrilled with the chicken."

Grilled Chicken with Brown Basmati Rice, Seasonal Vegetables and House-made Barbecue Sauce

Patty said, "Emme didn't like it. The brown basmati rice was not cooked enough. Still very hard and underdone."

Next up: Desserts of the past ;)

Almost all of the dessert photos that I received from Sept. 2012 - Jan. 2013 are listed on this Nov. 2012 Dessert menu sent to us by Beth (Couchy)...

Let's begin with the one that is listed first...

Caramel Corn Creme Brulee - Zellwood Sweet Corn Custard, Salted Caramel Swirl Ice Cream, and Caramel Corn Brittle

Vicki said, "Delicious...it was soooooo good! Well worth the month I spent trying to get the ADR."

Next up is the...

Pear and Almond Tart - Poached Pears, Lemon Shortbread Crust, and Toasted Almond Ice Cream

budafam said, "This dessert was okay. It was really big and I was unable to eat half of it."

Valrhona Chocolate Cake - Warm Chocolate cake with molten center, Gianduja Ice Cream, and Frangelico Chocolate Sauce

Beth said, "OMG, what a great dessert!"

Here is a photo of Beth's DH Wil at their Jan. 2013 dinner, which concluded with the Valrhona Chocolate Cake dessert...

Doesn't he look very content? :thumbsup2

But if the Valrhona cake was not enough to satisfy your chocolate cravings, then they also offered this dessert...

Heather's Chocolate Sampler
Marshmallow Whoopie Pies, Chipotle Chocolate Cupcake, Peanut Butter Buckeye Pop, and Valrhona Mint Chocolate Cup

Patty said, "I was too full to enjoy this. I had a bite of everything and it was yummy."

Prefer bananas and caramel over chocolate, then perhaps this was your favorite dessert...

Bananas and Caramel - Crispy Baked Phyllo Squares layered with Banana, Mascarpone Mousse, and Caramelized Banana

Robin said, "Tim chose the Bananas and Caramel and really enjoyed it."

Next on the dessert menu was the...

Warm Heirloom Apple Crisp
Chai Ice Cream, Hippen Tuile, and Apple-Currant Compote

Though we didn't receive any reviews of the last dessert on the Nov. menu, Key Lime Cheesecake, we do have a dessert that appeared on the last Dessert menu we received before the restaurant closed...

Dessert menu from Jan. 2013 (Photo by Couchy)

Strawberry Lemonade Cake - Plant city Strawberry infused Lemon Cake with Strawberry Sherbet, and Compressed Mint Strawberries

Robin said, "Now Alex, who is not a big dessert eater, decided on the Strawberry Lemonade Cake. His plate was totally clean when he was finished. He said this was fantastic."

I also want to include a photo sent to us by budafam of this unique CG Kid's dessert...

Kid's Crisped Rice Sushi Dessert

And I saved the best for last...

This is the platter of desserts that Paula & Hunter received in Oct. 2012 when Hunter said, "Surprise Me". Could that be the previously missing Key Lime Cheesecake at the top of the plate? ;)

Just adding my favorite Cali Grill memory -- Andrew's surprise cake!

Blurry family shot ...

We have had several truly great meals at Cali ... as a family, just with DS and of course the best of all with the group in December. It is the one restaurant I most look forward to going to when in the World! :thumbsup2

Thanks for sharing that Vicki. I had forgotten that it was at California Grill that you presented that great cake to Andrew. The photo that you sent me of that cake was one of the first "live from Disney World" pics that I posted so it definitely should be among the live thread highlights. :thumbsup2

So I have been putting off doing my summary of the trip because that means it is really over. :sad1: As most know, DS is moving on to college in the Fall and a new chapter in both of our lives will begin. This trip was a first step in that direction for me. First time I put me ahead of the men in my life. First time on a plane alone, at a hotel alone and taking a trip with no family. I have to thank all of the wonderful people on this trip for helping me do it and enjoy every minute! (Ok, except for the one breakdown in EPCOT!). Such an honor to spend time again with Barb and Brenda & Emily. And to meet the others that I felt I already knew – Paula, Linda and Patti & little Emme. Adding Hunter, Phillip, Beth, Rachel & Rob to the mix only iced the already perfect cake!:grouphug:

I will add myself to the list in saying that California Grill was my overall favorite meal. Everyone has posted such great pictures, I would only be repeating. Just the best experience! And I agree with Brenda that 50’s with Cousin Dave was the most fun. That is usually the first meal I talk about when asked about going to WDW with a group. I hope to get there with my extended family next year but doubt that we will be quite as misbehaved! :upsidedow

Couple of other great moments for me … one being getting to see the Animal Kingdom parade with everyone …

This is my absolute favorite Disney parade and now that it is closing I am especially grateful that I was able to see the Christmas version one last time.

As for the food portion, I am going to post my favorite things rather than meals …

I was able to have many of my very favorite Disney desserts on this trip … In no particular order,

Yak & Yeti’s wontons

Liberty Tree Tavern’s Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake

Via Napoli’s Zeppoles with the amazing chocolate sauce

And Rose & Crown’s Sticky Toffee Pudding

And a couple of other repeat favorites from previous trips …

The Bangers & Mash from Rose & Crown …

Pot Roast with a side of Collard Greens from 50’s Prime Time

Sushi from Cali Grill

And perhaps the thing I crave most when I am at home … pizza from Via Napoli

(Again I thank Barb for indulging my craving and allowing me to choose the toppings!)

And of course there are always new favorites from every Disney trip and this trip was no exception

Starting with the thing I have actually recreated at home … Santa’s Little Helper!

YSH Oysters …

And of course everything about the Grand Floridian Tea

So that’s it from me. One last THANK YOU to Barb, Brenda, Paula & Linda for pushing me into going on this trip and including me in the planning. :flower3: I am so sad that I will not be able to meet up with you all this year. I am already having serious Disney withdrawals with no trips on the horizon. I will have to visit thru you all for now.

I am so sad that I will not be able to meet up with you all this year. I am already having serious Disney withdrawals with no trips on the horizon. I will have to visit thru you all for now.

Another great trip summary, thanks Vicki! And I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we will see each other again in October. Hopefully I won't have to resort to kidnapping. ;)

Now it's out with the old, and in with the new...

When California Grill reopened its elevator doors on September 9, 2013, we were very fortunate to have a live reporter present. Here are the menu photos which Maiky sent us from that Grand Reopening night...

And another photo sent to us by Maiky, which gave us our first look at the new Cali Grill...

But let's rewind and start from the beginning, which for California Grill is at the check in desk on the 2nd floor of the Contemporary...

Perhaps one of the drinks from their new cocktail menu...

Sake Martini - Karen “Coy” Sake, Licor 43, and Cruzan Mango Rum with a splash of Orange and Pineapple Juices

Linda said, "Honesty I would go back to CG just for this. It really was that good. Not too sweet and a very delicate flavor. 10 out of 10."

Awww Vicki, Andrew looks so young in the CA Grill photo with his cake. I remember that as well. What a great celebration dinner. :)
