No it's not that I don't like it I'm allergic!

I have a kid with a food allergy (eggs/breaks out in hives). She manages it very well but the biggest issue we have is that because its not a nut allergy, people aren't as informed about it. As a result they often can't tell us if a food (potato salad is a big one) has eggs in it. If she had a nut allergy we could get a lot of information but with eggs we are stuck at times.

Thankfully everyone believes us & no one tries to fool us.

I'm allergic to mushrooms and seafood. People always give me the same "Oh, you don't like that" line...no...I just don't want my throat to close up!

That's why people who say they are allergic to, say, broccoli (because it makes them gassy) or eggs (because they don't like the smell) are jerks -- because they make people not take genuine allergies seriously. My future stepsister claims to be allergic to about a dozen things (dairy, gluten, eggs, nuts, vegetables, beef, whatever) when in reality she has never been tested. Her only real allergy is not being the center of attention.

Sorry about your blue cheese allergy. That would break my heart.

I think there's a big difference between how people handle food sensitivities and just the blanket statement that if you say you're allergic just because something gives you gas then you're a jerk. (And gas IS a sign of a sensitivity that could very well become a full-blown allergy.)

In most settings, it's far easier for me to just say "I'm allergic" when asked rather than say "I can't eat dairy this time of day or I'll be up all night with explosive diarrhea." I'm pretty sure people want to enjoy their ice cream without THAT picture in their minds.

Guilty. I am allergic to cashews and pistachios, but I don't like any nuts, so I will generally say I am allergic to nuts. And technically I could be allergic to more nuts but not know yet, since I don't eat them. I am also allergic to mangos, kiwi, and latex. They are all in the same family.

Watch bananas--they are cross reactive with the things you list. My DD is allergic to bananas, but not mangos, kiwi or latex. She has a tree nut allergy too.
I'm not allergic to dairy or lactose--just 'sensitive' to milk protein. Got to watch how much dairy I eat, so I just don't. Most of the time...same thing with shrimp and scallops. I can eat one or two very fresh shrimp. If they've been around awhile or I eat any more--I get violently ill. Scallops I can eat until they come out my ears--if I go catch them and eat them on the beach. If I eat a single one that's been frozen, refrigerated, etc. bleah...soo sick. Something about the proteins getting stronger when they've been sitting around...idk.

OP--sorry about your mom. Some people are just like that.

Yep, I have been warned about bananas, but I only ever eat them in banana bread and haven't had a reaction. I am also allergic to avocados, which I LOVE, and will eat occasionally with a side of benadryl.

Ok hello it's my Mom that does this all the time.i am one of the small % with a penicillin allergy that is also then allergic to blue cheese. (they use penicillin to get the "blue mold" lines to form) so small that most are not allergic. But I am!

So when my mom mentions a recipe with blue cheese in it she replies oh ut you don't like blue cheese. No I do like it but it makes me sick if I eat it so I don't.

Rant over.

I'm not getting what the rant is about. Is your mom trying to force feed you blue cheese or sneak it into things :confused3? I'm not allergic to anything. However, there are a few things I despise to the point that if I need to lie about being allergic to them so they don't appear on my plate I will.

My husband is allergic to wheat and gluten. He hasn't been tested but since eliminating from his diet he no longer bloats up like a balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving parade and doesn't throw up.

Those things also make him feel not good for about a week or so afterwards. He's had people he works with make potluck food, like chili without using flour or even beer so he could eat it. But, they didn't check the tomato paste they were using, and inadvertently added flour to the dish. He could tell after about ten minutes.

That's why I get so upset at shows like Rachel Ray or The Chew who mention something is gluten free, then they insist on adding beer to the dish. Rachel Ray downplays Celiacs, instead referring to people who eat gluten free as "picky eaters."

I am allergic to pennicillin and Sulpha drugs. My throat closes and gets numb if I eat kiwi. We (the Dr. and I) are pretty sure I am allergic to latex or are really sensitive to it. If I smell it (as in balloons) my lungs tighten and I have a hard time breathing. If I touch it I get a rash. I also seem to be allergic to any kind of gel. As in lubricating gels used for ultra sounds. As well wheat causes a lot of problems, ie migraines backaches, gas, bloating, well you get the picture. I have tried to tell people that I can't have certain things that I am sensitive to them and they laugh it off and give it to me. I end up really sick for the next couple of days. So now I just say that I am allergic. I am sorry if that upsets you but I hate being sick. I do have an epi pen because of the throat closing which I hope I never have to use.

Latex, kiwi, mangos, cashews, pistachios, and bananas are all related. I have that allergy (bananas unconfirmed) and also sulfa drugs.

She puts it in stuff to test my allergy. Or maybe she just forgets.........for a long time I thought I just didn't like it. My mouth would get numb with small amounts. Then once I threw up I asked my doctor. He sent me for tests and yep allergic. I have a severe penicillin allergy. I stopped breathing the one time it was given to me.

She will also tell me to just scrap it off when she puts it on top of things (melted)

I feel for the adults that develop allergies too because people think you are faking. That you just don't want to eat it. Usually throwing up on the table is enough to get them to believe!:rotfl2:

You don't understand someone slipping something you are allergic to into the food because they don't "think you are allergic"? That can kill someone!

I know what you mean. Very annoying. Nothing more then a bid for attention I think. And naturally they are allergic to pretty much under the sun unless of course they are in WDW. I guess even their food is magical.

Can't speak for anyone else on or of this dis but I eat the same at wdw as I do at home

Yes I know. I stay away from the other things because I know they are in the same family. I just want to take a chance. The kiwi is the worst of it though. One time I went to a restaurant and ordered a salad. I was okay with everything that was in it. When it came it had decorative kiwi on it. I sent it back saying that I was allergic to the kiwi and could they make me a new one. That no where on the menu did it say anything about kiwi. I was nice about it but knew I couldn't eat it. They brought me what I though was a new salad. No. They just took the kiwi off of it. Thank goodness I had just taken a very small bite because just my lips blew up but my throat didn't close. I was upset with them and decided that I had better not eat there. I did not pay for the salad and they seemed upset that I wouldn't just eat it without the kiwi.

I don't care if it is a life-threatening allergy, or just something that one does not enjoy or prefer.

What goes into my (or anyone else's) body is NOT anyone's business.

This is a HUGE pet peeve of mine.

People seem to have real control issues, and think that this applies to what others eat.
Man, that is just mentally ill.

I think it's just friends looking out for others health not a control thing

I completely understand. It's even more frustrating for me because i can completely understand why people would question my list of allergies....because of the number of allergies and the fact that new ones keep showing up every couple of months...but believe me...I would give anything to not be in this situation. I would NEVER lie about an allergy.

I am allergic to all of the top 8 allergens (except fish). I am also allergic to some more random ones like oats, coconut, sesame, honey, sunflower seeds, Bananas, cherries, etc. I also have severe OAS so I can't have any raw fruits or vegetables.

The most interesting ones for me are parabens, lanolin, and sodium benzoate. That makes medications tricky because of inactive ingredients. I was just in the hospital recently and learned that oral morphine has sodium benzoate and parabens in it....didn't know that until I took it and developed hives...I can only have IV morphine. Same thing with zofran....liquid zofran and dissolvable zofran both have sodium benzoate and/or parabens in them....which means I can only take the tablet or IV which makes things fun since I am routinely admitted for my GI problems. I am also allergic to dilaudid and dulera. But with dulera it's not the medication itself...it's either something in the processing that causes the reaction or an inactive ingredient. We are not sure.

Luckily, my physicians and my nurses have all been wonderful about it and they never question it.

And with the foods, I just never eat anything that is not made in our house anymore. Unless its at Disney...so far, we've had no problems with it at Disney. But I will not eat anything made at someone else's house. Even relatives..I had a severe reaction during thanksgiving a couple of years ago and that was the last time I ate food made at someone else's house.

I didn't know these were related as allergens! I tested positive for latex, avocado, and zucchini. However, bananas, pistachios, mangos and kiwi all give me severe stomach pain. I am not allergic to penicillin, but my Dad was.

I lie and say my kid is allergic to something he isn't. As an infant my kid had a reaction to an antibiotic that was severe enough that he burned his upper airway, leading to a year on a feeding tube and a lifetime on lung issues. Technically the reaction was an "intolerance" because his immune system wasn't involved, but I just say he's allergic so there's no chance he'll be given it again.

I "acquired" my Oral Allergy Syndrome about 10-12 years ago also. Stinks. I'm now allergic to ALL fresh fruit and nuts. (tree nuts) Peanuts are a "bean / legume" so I can still have peanuts. :sad2:

I also have Oral Allergy Syndrome. When I tried to explain it to a bunch of RAW Food fanatics who don't eat anything cooked, that I can only eat the fruits & some veggies only when they are cooked, baked, stewed, or canned (which heats the fruit during the canning process,) because heating breaks down the protein/enzymes I am allergic too, they thought I was just making it up.

Ironic, as the reason they eat foods raw IS because they believe cooking destroys the nutrients, but when I use that same principle to point out how YES, when cooked lightly, it does break down the protein I am allergic to, they then don't believe it. :sad2:
