All this fuss over a made up holiday that promotes reverse segregation... Political correctness is a dangerous thing....

What is reverse segregation? Wouldn't that just be inclusion?

Or are you trying to imply that the celebration of Kwanzaa somehow promotes African Americans to segregate themselves from the rest of the country?

Okay, to sum up: LSUTigerDISfreak thinks Kwanzaa should be "over in the African section." BayouMickey thinks it promotes "reverse segregation" whatever that means. Gumbo4x4 points out that it's all made up unlike those other real holidays.

Let's see...
African Americans can not just be happy with main stream colleges, so they have to have their own.

they can't be happy with being part of main stream pageants, so they have to have their own..

They can be happy with celebrating holidays as a whole with everyone else, so they have to have their own.

Any other race, especially caucasian, who would attempt to do the same would be deemed racist and wrong, but somehow, it's ok for African Americans. Do I sound racist? perhaps, but no more racist than the other side who throw the card around when opinion differs from their own.

Fact is fact..
1) Kwanzaa has no religious value or special merit except for the fact that they needed their own holiday.
2) Kwanzaa was created by an extremist during a time when they were rejecting anything associated by "the man"
3) Kwanzaa has only become popular when political correctness was at it's highest.

People scream and holler for total equality but then support something that promotes the opposite.

Believe it or not, I dream of an equal world, but we cannot become equal until we break down barriers and acknowledge double standards..

LOl.
Not even you could be that misinformed.
Seriously?

So it was not a matter of being "happy" with main stream colleges. It was more of the fact that we could not go. getting lynched because you wanted to attend college really isn't all that much fun.
Most historical Black colleges were established because of a crazy thing call segregation. If you place historical black colleges on a map you will see that all but 3 I think are south of the mason Dixon line. Pretty much all states that had Jim crow laws prohibiting blacks from attending "main stream" colleges.

Have you not heard of "Brown vs. board of education" or the little rock, James Meredith?
Any time the president has to send in the national guard to escort a kid to college for no other reason than he's black, what do you think would happen?

Same thing with pageants. It wasn't until the 1970's the Blacks were even allowed to participate in Miss America (I'm assuming that's what we're talking about).

Baseball was segregated. or have you forgotten about Jackie Robinson. so yes, there was a Negro league.

I have absolutely no problem with you being or sounding racist but at least do so truthfully.

Separate but equal was never true and it most definitely was never done by choice.

Ok, I'm being punked right??

yes there was a time needed for a negro league, but as time went on the need was ebolished, same with the other formentioned. There is no need for it and longer yet it persists. We can continue to hide behind "oh there was a need for it" till the end of time, but fact is it's not needed any longer, there was a need for polio vaccines once.. the fact is the reasoning for something that has happened decades ago is still being used as an excuse. I don't blame people, it's what we've been told to do and we follow. How we got things is not important, what's important is why o we still have them when it's no longer needed.

Do you feel the same way about Columbus day? Or St. Patrick's day?

:confused3

by why should the shut down? their great universities and most of them have great programs to diversify their colleges. none of them are "all black" anymore. they are historically black colleges but anyone and everyone can apply and anyone and everyone do attend.

Many of the small ones have shut down but you are saying they should close simply because they are historically black????

that makes absolutely no sense???

I mean here in Philly we have a Puerto Rican day parade. It is pretty famous along the east coast (regional thing). It's a party that got its start early when the cities Hispanic population had nothing to represent them. Heck, now the darn thing is a mega party on the parkway. Every body and their mama shows up.

Okay, so I'm done...I can no longer involve myself in a discussion with somebody who believes we no longer need the polio vaccine. That was just the tip of the iceberg of what's wrong with your rants.

absolutely. both holidays are frivolous and not needed. but we don't get the day off from these holidays either..

This entire post makes my heart hurt......may i suggest some serious introspection!!.....oh and maybe the fact that historically black colleges exist may have something to do with the fact that it wasn't to long ago that the national guard had to escort black children to class....and last time i checked, you can apply to any historically black college if u wish

Not shut them down, but open them up to all.

Sure you can, but will you be accepted?

If this thread wasn't contentious enough, bring on the vaccine debate!

Of course. But this particular one has no historical significance. The founders of Burning Man or Comicon could just as easily declare a "holiday" and get the same recognition. My apologies if Kwanzaa is important to you or others. Just pointing out how greatly it differs from Christmas, Thanksgiving, May Day, etc. in that regard.

when did Kwanza become a holiday?

My point being though we still have the vaccine, since 1988 it's not been needed as a cure more so now as prevention. Even the FDA was considering dropping the vaccine until the current outbreak in syria

we do have a "caucasian" holiday.....its called festivus for the rest of us!!!
