No Discount Using Target Red Card?

My mom tried to buy Disney gift cards yesterday using her Red Card but the girl working the checkout said you couldn't use your Ted Card to buy them and get a discount. Did I miss something? Was there a change or was the checkout girl wrong? Anyone successfully buy gift cards and get the 5% discount lately?

It still works online!
Target employees seem to be all over the map on this, as well as paying for Disney GCs with Target GCs. Both work, but the cashier may tell you it won't.
I say just do it without asking them about it.

It still works in store as well. Employees just don't know as much as the customers. The register will ring the discount automatically.

Rule #1 about any type of discounts. DO NOT ASK. The cashier rarely knows, if the discount will be given, it will be given. There is nothing the cashier needs to do one way or the other. It is the computer/cash register that gives the discount.

I think what happens is that you can't get the discount on Target GC's and cashiers tend to think that means all GC's. I think when most people pick up a GC, for Disney, Chilis, or whatever they are only picking up one maybe two and most likely with a couple other items so when the 5% comes off the cashier doesn't notice that the discount works on the cards. I have had a couple cashiers look surprised, probably because I tend to buy 20 or so a time, and when I told them about the discount they said they would def pick up the GC's when they go. They were also surprised when I told them their employee discount would work too.

Employee discount no longer works. Its been a year or 2 since it stopped working.

5% red card discount works. Just try it on 1 card if you aren't sure. We're talking a gamble of $2.50 on a $50 gift card.

You can do that online, not in the stores.

Not when making GC purchases. It can still be stacked with the REDCard discount for merchandise purchases.

As others have said, you don't need the cashier's permission. I bought one as recently as last Sunday and got the 5% off.
