No Day But Today- FINAL post on page 40!

Great chapter/installment/thingamajig! :thumbsup2 When I eventually muster up the courage (and bucks) to go deluxe, WL is definitely first on my list. BTW, the last sentence and picture are really touching. :flower3:

Hi Crystal, i was so excited to find a new report from you, so great to see the "World" through your camera lens again:goodvibes You always get the most unique and fantastic shots. BTW, it was you that inspired me to go for a solo trip as you made it seem so much fun to explore on your own schedule. Oh yeah, and because of you, for the first time ever, i have found out how to put a new font on my computer, and a disney one too:cheer2:

Just wanted to send you a very warm message of thanks for the inspiration, and the wonderful way your report entertains us all, I am a big fan, and can't wait for more.:grouphug:

Hi Crystal - Ive actually taken Stans tour twice! I agree its hard to do on days that one would want to be at the park openings. I went on days (different trips) when I was letting our teenage son get some sleep (longer trips).
During our very first WL stay in 2001 we had the pleasure of going with Stan the Man to raise the flags! It was quite an experience. The views were extraordinary. That same trip we extended our vacation. On the 6th day we added on another 3nights (were suppose to go to MILs in FL). She was w/us and agreed we could stay longer. During that time we took the DVC tour and became DVCers!
Looking forward to reading more of your trip report - thanks

Yay, a Crystal update. Your pictures and stories of the WL are really helping me to lean towards staying there next year, hmmmm. Lovely!:flower2:
And good luck with the phone search! :magnify: what a pain! I lost my phone at a bar once so I feel your pain. Luckily it did turn up. I hope your phone does too!

Crystal,

I am not a big fan of pre-trip reports but I skimmed through yours and it was very interesting. But you really have my attention now that you're into the actual report and are posting so many wonderful photos. :thumbsup2

On our trip this November, we stayed at ASMu the first night, just as you did, before transferring to the Wilderness Lodge. In fact, we had a room in the Rock Inn, very near yours, in 3141. Many of your photos are similar to mine from ASMu and it's fun to compare them. You have some excellent shots at the Wilderness Lodge, many at less common angles. Good work! My interior WL shots, especially of the lobby, turned out dark, and I will need to lighten them with the digital photo software as I post them. I'm curious, did yours photos come out that bright, or did you need to enhance them?

Looking forward to more photos and more of your report. :)

Some of them I got lucky with, and some I had to play with in Paint Shop a little. That lobby is so beautiful, but so flippin' hard to photograph! I've figured out that no flash, camera ballanced on something to make it sturdy is the way to go, but I still have some fine tuning to do from there! My new goal is a night picture of the "bear face" outside. I've *never* gotten a clear one!

Yay, a Crystal update. This defintely makes sitting down to another long day at work a little better. Your pictures and stories of the WL are really helping me to lean towards staying there next year, hmmmm. Lovely!:flower2:

No phone yet! I need to call the airline again today, just in case I lost it on the plane instead of the airport. Come home, little phone!

I did the DVC tour this trip, too! But more on that later ;) I wonder if there is anyone you can suck up to to get up on the WL roof without being the flag family? I've never asked to do the flag, since I'm usually solo, and I'd rather let an actual family do it, but man I want up on that roof!!!

Would you be available to follow me around and shower me with compliments all day? ;) Thanks so much for your kind words- I'm having "one of those days", and it's so nice to come back to responses like that! (And all of you guys who have posted, really! It makes all of the work that goes into a report so worth it!) And go team you with your new font! :thumbsup2 I'm a big nerd when I'm printing up my various lists for WDW- they must be cute! (even though I promptly forget about them, and never look at them on the trip!)

Great chapter/installment/thingamajig! :thumbsup2 When I eventually muster up the courage (and bucks) to go deluxe, WL is definitely first on my list. BTW, the last sentence and picture are really touching. :flower3:

Go WL! I can't say enough about that resort! My heart belongs to the Polynesian still, but WL is so much more affordable, and *almost* as good! (high praise from me!)

Okay, I've been reading this and just got to page 3, so I'll have to post again when I get to the end, but I had to say it. I've met Anthony Rapp!

LUCKY! The closest I've gotten is having him on my friends on MySpace! :rotfl2: He's a cutie, huh? Too bad he's taken!

Wow... that was a great installment. I love you for always focusing a lot on the resorts in your trip reports! I'm a huge fan of the resorts and visiting all of them and such, and not a lot of people write about them in their reports. So thanks!

This ended up being a really resort-heavy trip! I know a lot of people say not to spend a lot of money on where you stay, since you'll just be sleeping there, but instead I try to stay at the awesome places, but REALLY get my money's worth! (Wait till AKL day!) I seriously think I have just as much fun hanging out at the resorts as I do at the parks!

I read your whole thread tonight...really have enjoyed it and can't wait to read more.

Welcome! You have great courage conquering it all at once! :thumbsup2 More coming soon!

I am loving your report!! such great details...learning so much i never knew and I like your writing style!

Can't wait for more:banana:

See, it's not just a trip report, it's edumacational, too!

I don't know if you've mentioned it but I will ask anyway...what kind of camera do you have? The color is so vivid in your pics....love them!!

Keep the trip report coming!!

"My precious" is a Nikon Coolpix 995. We've been together a few years now, so I finally feel like I really know it. I think I'll be sticking with it until I win the lottery and can upgrade to the coolpix S10 (I am addicted to the flippy lens!)

I do "fix" a lot of my pictures in Paint Shop- mostly just to sharpen or crop, but I did finally figure out the "automatic color balance", which can warm up the colors on ones that turn out dull. Very handy tool!

In other photo news, my Photopass CD arrived in the mail today! Hooray! (Because this trip report obviously didn't have enough photos yet!)

Day 1 Bonus Photo Post!

I just got my PhotoPass CD today, and I can’t believe I forgot to tell you guys this story from Day 1!

You should know that I’m a Photo Pass junkie. Just ask Katie- if there’s a photographer within five hundred feet, I spot them, and we’re there! I want to smush as many photos on that CD as humanly possible! (Although funny enough, I only ended up with like 80 this time! I must be slipping!) Anyway, as I was walking to Pirates on my first morning, there was a Photopass (is it one word or two?) photographer set up in front of the Pirates sign, and one of the POTC CMs was out getting a picture with a kid. Being me, I jumped in line to be next! I was expecting a normal photo, but before I knew what was happening, I was being swept back into a dip, Gone with the Wind style! I look awful in this photo because I was cracking up, but it’s one of my favorites anyway!

photopass3.jpg

(By the way, do you know how hard it is to point your toe in a Croc?)

And my one other Photopass pic from that day (in which I thankfully look a little less manic!):

THANK YOU for the Postcard
The funny thing is that a week before yours arrived I got the same postcard. So now I have two identical postcards:lmao:

Thanks Agian:flower3:

Part 6- Day 2 continued

Hooray, you made it back!

(I had to break this part up because of the photos per post limit! Sorry!)

After the WL tour, I took a few minutes to wander around the resort. (As if I hadn’t done enough of that already?) Of course, those few minutes mean I have five million more photos to share! ;)

Imagine the size of the tree that whale came from!

Humphrey!

totemsign.jpg

I never noticed these signs before- they’re set into the floor at the base of each of the big totem poles.

refurb.jpg

I was a little bummed that this outdoor area was closed for refurb, I’ve always liked hanging out out there!

One of my goals was to find new angles to photograph the Lodge from- there aren’t many left that haven’t been done a million times! (See Day 5 for more WL photos!)

(The rest of this installment coming up momentarily!)

Hello
Im sorry what did you mean by saying "Hooray, you made it back" Are you talking about the postcard?

Part 7- To more than one dimension-(aka a long trip to Animal Kingdom)

I went down to the bus stop to catch a bus to Animal Kingdom- who knew I’d be there *forever*? (I think I may in fact STILL be at that bus stop, writing this trip report!) There were a few people there waiting when I got there, and I’m pretty sure they’re unofficial family now, because we all spent the next 45 minutes together!

I’m usually pretty patient with the WDW busses- I figure they’re free, and they keep me from having to drive anywhere on vacation, so it’s all good. I’ve accepted that I need to allow an hour to get wherever I’m going. But every now and then, you get one of those long, long waits that makes you a little crazy!

First, it was COLD! And guess who hadn’t brought a jacket from the room? I kept wondering if I should run back upstairs and get one, but I was afraid that if I left, I’d miss the bus. Second, there was a guy sitting at the bus stop playing LOUD music on his cell phone… for about 20 minutes. I’m sure you’re really proud of your snazzy new cell phone and all of its snazzy music playing capabilities, but dude, it’s early, I haven’t had coffee, and I’m freezing- I don’t want to listen to your annoying music!

The bus FINALLY arrived, and we all barely managed to smush on. Remember how I was one of the first ones at the stop? (3rd person, technically?) I didn’t get a seat. I’m not sure what’s up lately- I’ve never had this problem on a trip before, but this time, I was almost always one of the first ones at the stop, but one of the last ones on the bus! I could be standing right at the bus stop, and as soon as the bus pulls up, a big group walks right in front of me and gets on the bus! Ever just feel invisible? And I would understand if it was just an isolated incident, but it happened over and over and over! Manners, people! Manners!

So, where was I before I started ranting? Oh, standing on the bus to AK! The funny thing on this bus ride was the stop at Blizzard Beach (most AK busses stop there). Remember when I said it was cold? Well, it was way too cold for a water park, and apparently, most people agreed- there were a grand total of 21 cars in the BB parking lot! That must have been one EMPTY park!

An hour after I set off, I was arriving at AK, and guess what? The Christmas tree was still up! On Jan 10th! Yeah, I was surprised, too!

This zebra was one of the animals under the tree- he reminds me of the Lion King part of Philharmagic!

photopass2.jpg

Today I will be journeying deep into the heart of Africa, and from there into the soul of Asia, quite possibly all before lunch. My first order of business after getting into the park, however, was to buy a sweatshirt! I know, I’m a big whimp! I found a DAK sweatshirt that I liked that was just $32 (cheap by Disney standards!), and was MUCH happier!

On to Africa!

signs.jpg

Also, there’s a tree.

tree.jpg

I picked up a fastpass for the Safari- no lines for me! I had about an hour before the return time, so I set off for the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail- gorilla time!

(But first, photos! This baobob tree is the Safari fastpass area)

baobob2.jpg

baobob.jpg

So, are you ready for an incredibly embarrassing story? I thought I’d be all cool and use my snazzy new telephoto adapter to get some great animal pictures on the trail. So I reached in my bag, stuck the lens on the camera, and snapped away. It wasn’t until I got to the gorillas that I realized that I had put the *wide angle* lens on, instead of the telephoto! OH! So THAT’s why I had to keep zooming so much! I’m an idiot!

So anyway, enjoy these sucky-due-to-the-wrong-lens-choice photos!

pangani.jpg

okapi.jpg

Okapi! According to my field guide to DAK, the okapi has a tongue similar to a giraffe that’s more than a foot long! (I think giraffe tongues are hilarious, btw. Have you ever watched them? Hi-larious!)

mouse.jpg

I hope we never lose sight of one thing…it all started with a mouse!

meerkats.jpg

“So, Earl, what do you wanna do today?”

“Hmm, dunno, Billy. Wanna go ride Everest?”

“Nah, not really. Wanna go see Festival of the Lion King?”

“Nah, not today. Wanna just sit here?”

“Sounds good to me.”

“Me, too.”

gazelle.jpg

These guys are called Gerenuks! (I never knew that!) They’re known for being able to stand up on their hind legs, unsupported (I think I have a picture of that on a previous year?) I’m always amazed by how unreal they look!

camp.jpg

And what does this camp mean? It means we’ve reached the gorillas!

But not yet in the report! I’ve got so many gorilla photos they’re going to get their own post. Oh, the suspense!

It's Friday night.
And I'm sitting here anxiously awaiting the arrival of gorilla photos.
I'm such a Disney nerd. And I love it.:earsgirl:
Get busy, Crystal. We need another fix!

Since Arkansas mom is waiting for gorillas...

Part Day 2 continued- To Going Against The Grain (aka The one with Gorilla Photos)

I think that sometimes when we’re at Disney, it is easy to go into a sort of sensory overload- there are so many amazing things around every corner that they all sort of blend together for a while. Standing in front of the gorilla exhibit, I thought back to my trip last year when I was standing in this same place, and heard a pre-teen aged girl whine loudly, “What are we going to DO all day?” I’d been standing there watching the gorillas for a good 20 minutes at the time, and couldn’t image not knowing what I was going to do all day at DISNEY WORLD! But I do get it in a way- when you’re in a place where you can wake up to giraffes and zebras outside your window, it can start to feel normal after a few days. While at home, I can spend hours looking through the resort photo thread, all misty-eyed over Wilderness Lodge photos, once I’m back at the World, it all starts to seem normal- yeah, there’s the Polynesian, over there’s the MK. You feel like you’re there all the time, since it is, after all, “home”.

So I try to remember this when I’m there, to stop for a minute and say “Hey! These are freaking Gorillas! Right in front of me! How cool!” I think about the report I read a while back about traveling in Uganda to track gorillas- it involved all sorts of special permits, a five hour hike each way, and they were only allowed to observe the gorillas for an hour. And did I mention that they were escorted on their hike by people with machine guns, to protect them from rebels that may be hiding in the jungle? (Check out the Uganda section of thirteenmonths.com for their whole gorilla tracking story- it is an amazing site! They spent thirteen months (duh) traveling on their honeymoon!) When you think about all of that, it makes you realize a little bit more how lucky we are to be able to hike ten minutes down a beautiful path, and have two groups of gorillas *right there*, and we can stay there all day if we want. Halfway across the world, people are paying thousands of dollars and hiking for hours through impenetrable forest, in the rain, for just the chance to see gorillas for a while.

And now I present you with fifty million gorilla photos! No hiking, security, or immunizations needed!

gorilla9.jpg

gorilla8.jpg

gorilla3.jpg

Check out that LOOK! I wonder what he’s thinking?

gorillas.jpg

gorilla7.jpg

gorilla6.jpg

gorilla5.jpg

I seriously think that Animal Kingdom hires the models of the gorilla world. They were throwing out perfect poses faster than I could click photos! (There was some major telephoto action going on here, btw- the gorillas were pretty far away, thus the grainyness.)

gorilla4.jpg

gorilla1.jpg

I have no idea why, but the look on this gorilla’s face reminds me of Peter from Family Guy.

Remember the eight times I mentioned it was cold this morning? The keepers had put out some blankets for the gorillas to play with, and this one went around collecting them and piling them on top of himself! Smart gorilla!

gorilla2.jpg

gorillasign.jpg

As I mentioned back in the pre-trip, I’ve been learning a lot about photography this year. I’m still not *good* by any stretch of the imagination, but I’m learning! I thought I’d share a little of what I learned with you guys, so here’s Crystal’s Super Basic Photo Tip #1!

I’ve figured out that you can get totally different waterfall photos, depending on what your shutter speed is. For example, the shutter speed on this first photo was taken with a fairly fast shutter speed of about 1/80 second.

waterfall1.jpg

This second one was taken with a much slower speed of ¼ second. See how the slower time gives the water that milky effect? Both are good, depending on what effect you’re going for.

waterfall2.jpg

Here endeth the lesson!

gorillanotes.jpg

There are so many nifty details tucked into Animal Kingdom!

By the time I finished the Pangani trail, I had about 5 minutes left before my Safari FP time, so I found a bench and kicked back to people watch. I could see the FP entrance to the safari, and was amused by watching people try to enter before their time. (I get showing up a few minutes early and waiting around, like I was doing, but some people wait around for ages!) I cracked up when I actually heard the CM tell some people “You have two minutes, you’ll live!”

safarisign.jpg

I had good luck with birds posing for photos on this trip!

I decided to try out my telephoto adapter for my camera on the safari today- let’s just say I need more practice! Sorry for the quality of the safari pics- hopefully I’ll have the hang of it by the next trip!

wilson.jpg

Wilson Matua wants you to prevent poachers!

(Hey, if you have the music from the Safari downloaded, go put it on while you read- it will be like you’re there! If you don’t have it, either see the DAK link in the “Want to download some Theme Park audio?” thread, or sit there and sing it to yourself. “Na woo woo woo…”)

deer.jpg

I had to break out my DAK book again for these guys! They’re called Nyala!

eland.jpg

And elands! (At least these I knew! I think.,,)

ele1.jpg

I’m pretty sure you know what this is!

ele2.jpg

I really love elephants- I wish they had them in the park somewhere where you could stand and watch them (like you can the gorillas) instead of just driving quickly by them! They’re such cool, intelligent, emotional creatures. I remember learning on the Backstage Safari the first time I took it that the females like to stand around and “gossip”, and if one of the males shows up, they shut up! I also saw a show about them on Animal Planet- when one of their herd died, the entire herd gathered around to mourn it, almost like a funeral, before moving on.

giraffebaby.jpg

This is an awful picture, but you can kind of see the new giraffe baby in there!

giraffe1.jpg

warthog.jpg

Another really shaky pic, but this is the ONLY time I’ve ever been able to see a warthog on safari! Hi, Pumbaa!

And here we have to pause again! Stay tuned for a hilarious night at the Magic Kingdom!

Great pics, Crystal!

You would have loved the elephant conservatory we went to in Thailand last year - you get to hang out allll day w/the elephants and feed them, bathe them, etc. One of the highlights of my life.
121633504_e7e7611628.jpg

121633498_7c89e36db0.jpg

ETA: You're right that they are such smart and emotional creatures. One of the elephants at the conservatory came to them blind and they didn't know how they were going to figure things out w/that elephant. Another elephant "adopted" the blind elephant and never left her side and would lead her to the water for bath time, would fight off ornery elephants, etc. So sweet.

Hey, did that happen to be Elephant Nature Park?

Crystal, beautiful pics.

Nan, I bet that was an amazing experience. I love animals so much, I would love to do something like that.

Thanks for the great reminder -- I just ordered mine!

Love the trip report!

After reading a few of your trip reports -- I decided that my next trip to Disney, will be one where I switch resorts a couple of times. Any tips? I start off in the Dolphin then go to CB, and POP.
