No Buy January 2010

And low & behold while we were at Disney I get a call from the farmer asking me how I want my cow cut up. He had bought it for me!!! When we got home my b-i-l went to pick it up for us & now my freezer is FULL of meat!

So I bought him the cutest cow mug on ebay and sent it to him. How's that for No Buy? :cool1:

Wow!! What a generous man! I just hope that the many people he encounters in his life catch a little of his kindness and pays it forward :)

Our van is on the fritz at the moment, and since I'm desperately in need of groceries, I had to buy only a day's worth since I was walking home. I really would rather just shop one big day, but for the next day or two I suppose I'll be stuck with no $0 due to buying groceries that way :P

Groceries: 18.05/$500 ($125/week)

$97.98/$202.78

I've got annual membership dues for three organizations this year - I'll be paying one each month for Jan, Feb, Mar to help even out the cost. :thumbsup2

1/5 Dd did have to go to the dr. $24.00 for that (co-pay plus a little left on the bill from last time), but that's in the budget.

But then I decided to go back and get take out because she said she was hungry and she hasn't been eating too much lately. $12.00 for the two of us!!:scared1: It is ridiculous!

So that will have to come from the grocery budget. (212.00 left for the month)

We are always running by and grabbing fast food, I guess I just never paid much attention to the price. I could have bought at least 3 chickens for what those 3 legs and one thigh cost!!!

That is one thing we will be cutting out this year! No fast food.

Almost forgot, had to run by the dollar store and grab some chips for our lunch at work today and some Tylenol for dd, $8.00.

So, if the other comes out of the budget; that leaves yesterday at

1/5-$8

OMG!! Here we go with more eating!!!

I have been having a little show down with my kids about food. They are usually pretty good eaters, we garden and raise our own meat chickens and have egg layers. Beef and pork comes from a local farmer. A lot of our money still goes to food or eating out etc. I am trying to rein that in and one of the ways I am doing that is eating up what we have when we have it available. The kids (DS 11 and DD9) aren't really going for that. They are used to there being an endless amount of choices. There is still plenty to eat but the choices may be this or this so we can use up that last stray banana or the last lonely rice cakes. I am sticking to my guns around here. I am determined to make it this month on this food budget, my goal is leftover money. I have payments for pork and beef going out this month so this would be an enormous accomplishment. We have so much food in this house I know it can be done with a little extra effort and creativity.

I wish we had a garden. That would be cool.

We're going to try our best not to eat out at all this month. Well, with the exception of while we're out at Disneyworld, of course.

Do you have the space for one? It can really be as complicated or as easy as you make it. If you don't have any ground space how about a couple of 5 gallon buckets with some veggies you like to eat in them. Two tomato plants in good dirt can provide more tomoatoes than most people can eat off the vine.

We have about 7500 square feet of fenced in garden, but it has taken us about 14 years to get to this. We started very small and now grow enough to essentially feed ourselves (and guests) for most of the year and we live in Pennsylvania, growing season can be short but I've learned to stretch it with cold frames for spinach and scallions. This is what makes it even more frustrating to me that my food budget is so high. I am paying very very careful attention to the food money this month. I think that we may be dipping into it for other things....little bits here and there. Not this month. :teacher:

Sadly, no. Not much room. Just a small yard that our dog uses as a bathroom. :rotfl: Also, our soil is that horrible clay soil. Right now it's underneath a few feet of snow!

Our neighbors planted a tiny garden. They put in a big wooden box and I think they only planted tomatoes last year. (I don't eat tomatoes but they gave us a couple.)

I have a black thumb and don't know the first time about gardening. I wouldn't know what time of year to plant anything or what to do. I also don't know what things can grow in our climate.

1/4-8.27 for 8 boxes of cheerioos at Vons. I guess I could say 0$ since its part of the grocery budget.

1/5 0$!(DH did go to store but thats grocery money as well)

1/6 1.39 for a Sonic Chiller(used a coupon though!), 43.00 for Preschool sign up for son(not bad a 8 week, 2x/week course and 3 bounce house days), and I am going to drop off some alterations tonight...

This thread is great it is keeping me so accountable. I am doing pretty good at lunch packing too!
