Just taked with guest services who called Mama Melrose. She was shocked as well. NO bread with your meal ??? $$$. Bread with your meal is now an Appetizer! Disney is getting cheap :scared1:
Its like a birthday cake without icing or a Mexican meal without chips :lmao:

WHAT other surprises Disney !!

By the way I cancelled my reservation.........

That is ridiculous (and cheap!) Who on earth eats pasta with no bread? :confused3 I'm glad I cancelled our September ressies there!

No it isn't. Name three WDW restaurants that are not fixed-price that bring bread to the table if it isn't explicitly ordered.

I'll wait.

We are talking about tradition. All the local Italian places of business where I live Always serve bread. It's Italian !!!!

IMO your question is irrevalent as Mama Melrose, in the past, did serve bread .
Its just another $ save a few cents tactic.
New people to the restaurant will not even know :confused3

Wait a minute bread, as in bread and butter is an appetizer, now? What the heck is that??

I can name three Brian
Lecieller'
Kona'
Concourse Steakhouse

I can't think of one sit down restaurant that doesn't serve bread. Off the top of my head these all serve bread for free (Le Cellier, Rose and Crown, Concourse Steakhouse, Alfredos, Chefs France, Tony's).

Le Cellier does? I thought they abandoned this too. I guess I'm mistaken.

In any event--anyone surprised that Disney is trying to maximize profit hasn't been paying attention.

I don't think anyone is suprised that Disney is trying to maximize profit, as does any business, and Disney is a business. I think that we're more frustrated because bread with an Italian meal is traditional. I know of NO Italian restaurants, Disney or other, that do not serve complimentary bread with a meal. (Even fast food Fazoli's gives breadsticks). I also can't think of any restaurants where bread and butter is sold as an appetizer. All the restaurants I patronize serve at least one piece of bread as part of the meal, and most times it's an all you can eat refillable basket. Cutbacks are understandable but this one is just too much, IMO.

Citricos, Artist Point, I'm pretty sure Kona brought bread last time we were there, Grand Floridian Cafe brought bread. Oh and Raglan Road brough bread, so did Boatwrights.

Unbelievable! What next, a charge for extra napkins? I know my comment is a bit over the top but I am getting so dispirited by so many changes across the board at WDW. I tried to think of what WDW has given us in the past couple of years to compare to all that has been cut back/taken away, etc. I can only come up with Magical Express which is a big thing to many guests but not to us as we always rent a car. Besides, they did not really give it to guests for free as it is being paid for by us in other areas. I hate feeling so disenchanted by Disney but it has been creeping up on me over the last year. We have been taking 3-4 trips a year and after our August trip this year, we are not renewing our APs. As of right now, we are not planning to return to WDW until 11/08. I really, really , really hate feeling this way about something that we have loved, enjoyed and obsessed over for so many years! I hope Disney is paying attention to the increased number of threads on these boards of negative experiences. I was one of the staunch defenders of everything Disney on these boards but I have not been able to lately. Alright- off soapbox. Sorry for hijacking the thread. There are still other things in life that are more important!

- Yachtsman Steakhouse
- California Grill
- Jiko

I'm sure there are more, but those all served bread without ordering it as of May '07. :smokin:

Well, lots of places gave bread to us in Oct. I remember because my DD loves bread. I know we got it with out asking at Rose and Crown, Kona, Le Celliar, Flying Fish, Wolfgang Puck.

I have never gone to an Italian restuarant that did not serve bread. Most that I go to, even chains like Carrabas, serve bread, olive oil with spices, and butter. I always thought it was common at Italian restaurants. Making people PAY for bread just seems really cheap. :sad2:

We have our first ADR there this Sept, with free DDP. It will be our last. I shouldn't be eating a lot of bread anyway, but bread is usually standard with Italian food. Will they start charging for water next?

Maybe Disney could put out some kind of press release like "In order to reduce our customers consumption of fat producing carbs we are cutting out bread with all our TS meals." That way they will be letting us know that they are ONLY thinking of our health. :rotfl:

There's a parallel thread on the main restaurants board concerning this issue, and while I was hoping that maybe the OP was the victim of one of WDW's infamous "telephone games," unfortunately in this case it doesn't look that way. If it's any consolation, the basket of bread you apparently get for - hold on to your hats - $6.99* is an assortment of "artisan" breads and you get 4 different spreads to go with it - it's not just plain italian white bread with butter. But regardless, that place won't be getting my money (or DDP credits, as the case may be).

*Menu on Allears says $6.99, menu on DIS says $5.99

I know no one wants to hear this but it is because of the dining plan. Sorry but it is!

I wouldn't complain to loud about Mama's not having it and other restaurants still having it because with the way Disney works, they will take away the bread at all the other places and give you NO bread anywhere!

It is strange but

One poster though a good lunch at Olive Garden is soup combined with complimentary water and bread sticks.

I wonder if too many guests were using unlimited free bread as a budget technique. I could accept a restaurant not offering unlimited bread but I agree with the previous posters. Italian restaurants traditionally offer complimentary bread or bread sticks. Limit the refills or charge extra if guests aren't ordering an entree. I've dined at restaurants that have a sharing or plate charge. The menu states this charge includes bread.

I wonder how long before Le Cellier starts to charge for the pretzel bread.
