Day 2 – 2/28 – Part 1

Cast:

Alex – DH and stepfather to:
Caitlin, 13
and me, Amy, the official trip planner

Well, right off the bat, I have to say that I only slept about 4 hours last night. I have problems with my upper back and neck and frankly, the bed is just terrible! I got up and took a shower at 6:00 a.m., muttering to myself, “I will have fun, I’m at Disney World, doesn’t matter how tired I am, darn it!” While Alex got ready, I went down and found Tubbi’s (which is very hidden away) and got Caitlin and I a refillable mug and some donuts and bananas for breakfast. Having to go so far for a Diet Coke is the worst part of this vacation. That said, hey—getting a Diet Coke in the morning was the worst part of the vacation! Not a big deal. Alex was lucky; he had a coffee maker right there on the night stand. He told me "nanner, nanner, nanner."

I got Caitlin up and first she moaned and groaned. Then I whispered in her ear, “The Rock-n-Roller Coast is waiting for you.” That did the trick. She jumped up out of that bed so fast, she almost chipped my tooth. She got dressed lickety split and we were outta there!

We fumbled around a bit and located the boat dock. I could see it from our room, but getting down to it took a little bit of work. One of Cait’s favorite rides was the boat. She always wanted to go to whatever park we could get to by boat—not the stinky old bus. And her favorite seat was in the very back, out in the open. Did I mention it was only about 40 degrees this morning? We sat inside. Because I said so, that’s why.

We got to MGM in about 10 minutes and found our way to Guest Services to exchange our vouchers for a real live AP. Cait was chomping at the bit—“WHY do we have to go in this line instead?” Her AP had Minnie Mouse on it. This seemed to only add insult to injury especially after I got Donald Duck (my absolute favorite) and Alex got Goofy (very appropriate). For some reason, Cait thinks Minnie’s real name is Wimpy Mouse.

Got there and sat bumper to bumper at the rope drop. We walked (not running) briskly to R-n-R and hopped on right away. Caitlin had to fling her hand along on the bead door to make a terrible racket and scare all adults in the area. She did this EVERY time we rode. I even took a picture of her doing it! What a way to start the morning—60 mph in 2 seconds. My ears were really freaking out and I had a hard time hearing the rest of the day, but it was great. We didn’t buy that picture though because I had my eyes squeezed shut and I'm vain. Everyone else can look bad in the picture, but not me. Because I'm paying for it and I look better than that. We got in line again and heard this lady behind us debating back and forth about riding it. After we got out of the pre-show, she and her companion were right behind us. She asked Cait if she was afraid and Cait told her she’d ridden it many times before. We explained that it was very smooth and the worst part was the initial takeoff. You hardly even notice going upside down. Cait and I worried about that lady the whole ride. We caught up with her afterwards and asked her how she liked it. She yelled, “It was FANTASTIC and I’m going on it again! Thank you for talking me into it!”

This time our picture turned out well, although I’ve learned something about Alex. It doesn’t matter what ride he’s on, he always looks like he’s just tooling along in his car—slightly bored and maybe listening to a good tune on the radio. Not unhappy, just not thrilled. It makes for some unusual pictures of the three of us—Cait and I screaming our heads off and Alex all calm like he’s on Small World. Bought the picture and on to something else—although I had to drag Cait away. At 13, she now would be totally happy to just ride the same ride over and over and over.

We went to Star Tours as this used to be Cait’s favorite ride at DL when she was little. We were both surprised at how, well, kinda boring it’s become. I think they need to update it a little. Next was MuppetVision 3D because Mommy likes that one. Gotta love Kermit and the gang. Cait bought a little Animal beanie in the gift store that became a constant companion along with a Stitch backpack she picked up at the hotel. Of course, she couldn’t actually carry anything but Animal in the backpack—Alex and I had to tote her autograph book, pen, inhaler, and Kleenex in our pockets. Stitch really likes roller coasters, in case you were wondering. He rode them all with us.

Then, again for Mom, we went to see Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Now this is the ride (although Cait kept telling me, “It’s not a ride, it’s an ATTRACTION, Mom. You don’t ride anywhere.”) that I would go on over and over and over. A lady from Michigan got the hot seat—she was really embarrassed. She got a question about Seinfeld (which she had never seen) and used her Call a Complete Stranger lifeline. The guy that answered was from Peru and had also never seen Seinfeld (and didn’t even know what Seinfeld was). The host took pity on her and gave her the correct answer.

Something odd has happened since Cait’s gotten older. Her new favorite “attraction” seems to be any gift shop. This is the kid I had to drag into a gift shop on our last day to get souvenirs for friends back home—now we can’t get her outta there. So, we went gift shopping for awhile (yawn). Alex would follow us around, then go find a smoking spot and wait for us.

We had lunch at the 50’s Prime Time Café. I’d never been there before and had always wanted to go. Cait had been there on a school trip last year so she wasn’t as impressed as I was. Actually, I think she was afraid she'd get in trouble. Alex was excited to know where the stuff from his childhood homes had ended up. He kept saying, “Hey, we had one of those!” We waited in the living room, then the hostess took us to our seats. Well, she tried to take us to our seats, but I didn’t want THOSE seats—there were all sorts of the kitchen tables with the TV’s open and she tried to tuck us in a little corner table. I very politely asked if we could have one of the other tables instead. She tried to put me off and said she’d have to check and it might be a longer wait. I think she was surprised when I told her that was okey dokey with me--we could just hang out in Dad's living room. She came back and, yes, we could have one of the cool tables.

Our server came up and it was Uncle Dave. I felt like I’d met a movie star when he told us, “Love ya, Mean it!” Then I had to explain it to the family! He dumped the silverware basket on the table and said, “This is not a centerpiece; you kids need to set the table if you want to eat.” I was chastised for having my elbows on the table. He asked me how I ever expected Cait to have good manners. I pointed out that Caitlin had perfect table manners, so I figured I could slack off a bit now. That’s when he told her, “That’s right. She’s my perfect little angel girl.” He called her that for the rest of lunch and embarrassed her to death. I ordered fried chicken, Alex had chili fries, and Caitlin had chicken pot pie. Cait decided she didn’t like “that kind” of chicken pot pie, but she didn’t want to get in trouble so she got Alex to trade lunches with her. (Perfect little angel girl) I got in trouble and had to eat all my green beans. <sigh> It was a great time.

We were pretty full so we went back to the hotel to nap.

Day 2, Part 2 coming soon!

Sounds like you had a great lunch. I was debating about going to Prime Time, but my 8yo is such a picky eater, and all it would take is one CM to chastise him (even in a friendly way) and he would have been done for the rest of the day.

RnR was the best... my 11yo along with DH chickened out on this ride, but my 8yo begged to go on, so I went with him. He loved it!!!

Can't wait to read the next one.

Arrrr, our cousin at 50's prime time was the cool cousin, me got away with quite a bit, except when another CM caught me with me elbows on the table :)

Great reports, keep em comin!
