NJDMV put in strict security measures and rules for renewing a New Jersey Drivers License. My license expires at the end of the month, but since we are going on the Magic in 2 weeks, I wanted to get a new picture id. The place was a zoo. I was in and out in 60 minutes but I was prepared with all my documents. You needed to have documents that valued or equaled 6 points.
There were lots of people that did not have the required documents.
NJDMV 6 Point System - Here is what I presented
Primary Document
Birth certificate = 4 Points Each
US Passport = 4 Points Each
Secondary Documents
You had to present a current document with your address. I showed my latest AMEX bill.

Good luck to anyone who is going to renew their New Jersey Drivers License this month.

Glad to hear you went prepared. I saw on the news how it was a madhouse today. I understand the reason behind such tight security, but it is an awful lot of documentation to present, especially for renewals.

The sad thing is that is isn't going to stop the problems.

The September 11th terrorists got their drivers licenses from NJDMV--as have a lot of others who were "illegal's". But 99% of them got the license by bribing a DMV employee. So how is this new system going to stop that? It's not. It's only going to inconvenience a lot of people.

As far as I'm concerned, I have a valid passport which I'll show them to prove I'm me. And I'll bring in the renewal paperwork which they sent to me at my address to prove where I live. This is a renewal for God's sake--they already should know who I am and where I live, I've had a NJ license for 10 years. Or are they suddenly deciding that they're a bunch of idiots (which WE'VE known about them all along!) ?

It's an absolute invasion of privacy to ask for a paystub, bank statement or credit card statement, and I'll simply go get a license in another state if it comes to it.

They're asking for this rather than a utility bill???

I'd have more faith in this new system protecting me if NJDMV required everyone to get the new license w/i a limited time period. However, they're just requiring it whenever your license expires. Mine doesn't expire until 9/04. Many people have licenses that don't expire for several years from now. Until everyone has this new license I don't see this crackdown as being very effective.

Georgia just passed rules making it easier to renew a drivers license.

I renewed mine over the internet.

A month before your license is to expire you receive a letter from the GADMV mailed to the address on your drivers license. Using a code printed on the letter you can logon to the GADMV website and pay the $8 to renew your license. They send you a new license with your old picture.

You are allowed to renew this way every other time.

Next time I will have to go in person and have a new picture taken and pass the eye test.

The OP said a current document with your address. I would think that a utility bill would do, and I personally wouldn't consider that an invasion of my privacy. Of course, I wouldn't consider showing them my Visa bill with my address on it an invasion of my privacy either - they just want to see the address, I doubt that they care to look at what I bought or how much I spent.

Boy am I glad that I got my license renewed in July. I don't think I have anything that has my NJ address on it. I go to school in PA and live there for school but car and insurance are all in NJ but not in my name. The only mail I get in Jersey is junk mail. Thankfully by the time it's up for renewal again I will already have a PA license and hopefully a new car and permanent address in PA as well.

Very invasive IMHO, and not going to do a darn thing to stop some DMV employee from selling them licenses on the black market.

My utilities are all in DH's name!

I just don't see how presenting ID is invasive.

Will it completely stop fraud? Probably not, but it will make it more difficult IMO.

It's some of the TYPES of ID they are requesting that I find invasive and not well thought out. How does my marriage license and my passport prove where I live?

I think DMV asking for ANY type of banking info is WRONG. To begin with, at least a few times a year they're hauling DMV workers out in handcuffs for some sort of fraud type crime or another. Would you give someone like that access to YOUR baking info? It proves NOTHING!

My health insurance card has my husbands name on it, as do the utility bills. They are making it harder for those of us who do pay our bills, work, and contribute to society without taking care of the root of the problem, criminals who work at DMV!

The bottom line is that each state has the right to set their rules for obtaining a DL. NJ obviously felt that after two of the 9/11 hijackers were able to get NJ licenses, that something needed to be done, and I think they were right.

Anyone that doesn't want a license can go elsewhere, but I don't think that will be so easy either - all of the states are tightening up, and I don't know why any state would issue a license to someone that doesn't live there.

I don't understand what the big deal is about taking in your birth certificate, marriage license and your current driver's license.

Present:

Passport (4 points)

~or~

birth certificate (4 points)

~or~

NJ digital license (4 points)

WITH

social security card (1 point)

~and~

current non digital NJ photo license (1 point)

~or~

Property tax statement bill

No need to bring a bank statement or ATM card, health insurance card....etc., etc.,

Quite frankly, NJ DMV is so bogged down in paperwork to begin with, that this should be one exercise in futility.

Good luck to anyone in NJ. It's gonna be a fun time......

They got them through paying off a DMV employee. So there you go. Make life harder for the hard working people in the state who already have to deal with the NASTIEST bunch of people you've ever met (DMV employees) but continue to not deal with the ROOT of the problem--the NASTY, CROOKED DMV employees themselves!!

They got them through paying off a DMV employee.

I did some research, because I had not heard that this was the case. Turns out that apparently none of the hijackers had NJ DLs.

TRENTON, N.J. — A persistent belief that two of the Sept. 11 hijackers carried New Jersey driver's licenses has proven false, a congressman says.

I guess the NJ officials have decided that regardless of whether or not the hijackers had NJ ID, the system that was in place was inadequate.

I would imagine that taking 2 or 3 forms of ID to the NJDMV is no more difficult than taking 2 or 3 forms of ID onto a cruise ship. Or is it?

Again, the problem has been over and over NJ DMV workers arrested for selling licenses on the black market. I don't know how they think that imposing new requirements on people is going to solve that problem.

I only took one form of ID on the cruise. My valid US Passport.

I do'nt see why my valid passport and current DL with the renewal materials received in the mail aren't sufficient. They prove my identity and my address. To need more than that is just plain archaic, bureaucratic garbage.

Anne

It's not just DMV workers selling licences. It's also individuals with questionable motives taking just a utility bill with their supposed name and a NJ address on it to DMV and getting a licence. I've lived in NJ all my life and the licence I have is a joke. I could have made it at home. It doesn't have my picture on it. I don't bother to use it for ID out of state. The new licence is much more technologically advanced and therefore much more difficult to replicate.

I don't see what the big deal is over showing proper documentation. I just wish everyone was required to get one in the immediate future.

Considering that a few months ago I had to go to DMV THREE TIMES over a two week period to get my license renewed because the computers were down each time, there is NO WAY IN HECK I'm going through that nightmare again because they can't get their act together.

I showed up with proper ID, and waited. The first day I waited four hours. The second day only two, as I had to get to a meeting at work. The third day I was there for about three hours before the system finally got up and running.

I'm not dealing with that again. Next time I'll just get a license with my Florida address and be done with it.

They can't make their voting booths work, but they can at least run their DMV.

The thought of someone not committing an act of terror based on the type of license they do or do not possess is ridiculous at best.
