Just got back from the Jersey Shore. Let me just say, I saw my life pass before my eyes once and maybe twice. When you are in the crosswalk that seems to be the signal for NJ drivers to gun it and see if they can beat you when making a turn before you finish crossing the street! Oh man don't mess with me when my kids are crossing the streeT!! It was so bad, I wouldn't let my 14 year old cross the street alone, they had to call us from the mini-golf place so I could walk down and meet them. What a change from vacationing in New England where they stop in all directions when you are ten feet from the curb. Since I spent my first 22 years in NJ I feel qualified to bash your horrible driving skills.

I like NJ drivers. Makes life more exciting. ;) (Yes, I live in NJ.)

I grew up in NJ. We used to say that if you stepped off the curb, you were fair game. Meaning us stepping off the curb. I was in FL 15 years...cars will slam on the brakes to stop when someone is crossing the street. Now in VA, I see I'm back to dodging cars! They don't stop here.

Funny timing of the post. I had the opposite experience today and it shocked me!
My daughter was riding her bike and was across the street from me, (side street) I was in our driveway.
2 cars turned onto the street and having seen them coming I told my daughter to stay where she was, which she did. The first driver had stopped, I waved him to go, then the second driver stopped, and I again made sure my daughters feet were not even on the pedals, she wasn't moving, and I waved him to go with a big thank you, as well.
Not what I usually count on here. LOL

:rotfl:

I'm starting to teach my almost 16 year old DD to drive (we live very close to Jersey in PA.) I've warned her many times about Jersey drivers.

They truly are a breed unto themselves!

Didn't you know that in NJ crosswalks are a target? Living here all of my life its just a part of everyday living and you just have to be aware of every one and every car around you. Never think you can make it and take a chance and try crossing the street - bets are that the car isn't going to stop - they MIGHT slow down.

it used to be, at least here in south jersey before the casino's and all the new developments and 1000's of people that moved in, that there wasn't any traffic to worry about. The only time we had to be careful was in the summer when all the "shoobies" showed up along with the lovely driving skills they learned in Pa and north Jersey. Now we claim that the reason nobody here knows how to drive is because there's nobody left here who didn't move from somewhere else. Not looking to insult anybody here by any means, just repeating local logic. Actually, my dh has to go thru the Somer's Pt circle at the foot of the Ocean City bridge to get to work every day. He's been inches away from a major collision at least 5 times since the end of June because it seems that none of the visitor's know they have to yield to traffic already in the circle! It seems that when people go on vacation they seem to leave their common sense at home. Maybe that's behind some of the rude things that people have posted about at WDW as well.

hmmm I think we drive just fine

I am from the jersey shore and i didn't really notice that people were bad drivers until i read this post and started watching people. There are some terrible drivers here and thats why insurance rates are so high. But, you have to have terrible drivers in other states and most of the people here during the summer time are not locals, they're really people from out of state on vacation.

Long Island (NY) drivers aren't much better! I can't tell you how many times I've seen them make LEFT turns on red! And there is this one corner close to home. Right turns on red aren't allowed there--but there have been plenty of times that I've seen people do it! And even where they are allowed, 75% of the drivers don't stop, they just roll thru. And don't get me started about stop signs......

I've lived in NJ all my life, and while I understand that we do tend to drive fast and aggressive on the highways, I tend to think that if you're at a sidewalk, you just need to assume the car will not stop and let you walk. I know it's very unfair, but personally when i'm walking (like this last week in Ocean City NJ) i'd wait until every car was out of sight before walking my 3 yo across.

And in all fairness, a lot of the visitors to the beaches in NJ are from PA and NY as well...

With that being said though, I do know what you mean. I however, had a lot of very nice drivers this past week at the beach and it was calm for the amount of traffic in the area.

Hillbeans I know what you are saying about NY and PA drivers, but honestly I used to work at Princeton U. and NJ are the worst. They had to post huge banners across the crosswalks because students were getting hit. In fact I remember being 9 months pregnant and some guy almost took me out, I whipped my Snickers bar at his Volvo door and when he slammed on the brakes I was like "Comeon, let's rumble buddy". Later that afternoon a Prof who saw it happen said "Remind me not to mess with you!" I mean people would actually gun it -- while kids are in the crosswalk, c'mon! In Sea Isle we were with a group of 12 and my DH is like hurry, hurry -- this guy was gunning it, and my DS 14 just FROZE like a deer in the headlights. As for waiting until no cars in sight, well we would still be standing there.

Oh, how I dread those left turns! I've had to drive to NJ from CT about twice a month for the last year and have visited several different towns (or is that townships?). I can never tell whether I need to get into the left lane or the right lane (jug handles) to make a legal left turn. I can see where NJ drivers might have high blood pressure!
