Nintendo announced the drop in price of the 3DS starting 8/12. As an incentive to those who had just purchased a new unit prior to the drop in price, they would give out 20 free e-games (Nintendo ambassador program)

However WalMart dropped the price already. So you have today and tomorrow to get the extra games.

You MUST register the console before 11:59pm 8/11/11.

"1. Starting Sept. 1, Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors will be able to download 10 NES™ Virtual Console™ games at no charge and before they are available in the Nintendo eShop to the general public. These games, including Super Mario Bros.™, Donkey Kong Jr.™, Balloon Fight™, Ice Climber™ and The Legend of Zelda™, are slated to become paid downloadable games, but Ambassadors get them early for free. Once the paid versions of the games are posted to the Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost.

2. By the end of 2011, Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. These include games like Yoshi's Island™: Super Mario™ Advance 3, Mario Kart™: Super Circuit, Metroid™ Fusion, WarioWare™, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong™. These games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future. "

Wow!! This is great!!!!!!! My little guy saved up all his pennies and BEGGED for extra chores to get the 3DS. He worked his 7 year old behind off to make all the money needed. I didn't give in and pay for it, even though I could because I felt it was time to teach him lessons about earning and saving.
He did such a good job and worked so hard that I felt bad for him that he got his 3DS literally a month or two before they knocked over 100 dollars off the price:headache:

This will perk him up a bit. He is happy with the unit and enjoys it. I hope this works in Canada!!
Do you know where I go to register and download?:confused3

Do you have to buy in store? This would be great as DS has asked for this with the understanding that it would be his only gift. Any freebies I can get him for this is bonus!

I would say yes you have to buy in store to get online with the 3DS and register before midnight tomorrow.

walmart.com says the 3ds isn't availible in stores and has it for preorder with a shipping date of 8/12

I don't get it. Amazon has it for 170, but only for pre-order. How do you register it and get free games if it's a pre-order that is released the day after the promotion ends?

http://www.nintendo.com/corp/nintendo3ds/news/

found this online and only read through it quickly. It looks like the free games are only for those who paid the higher price for the 3ds. My son will be thrilled!

Since you spent $$$$$ more they are giving you "free" games to "make nicey nice" with you!

I'll have to read through more thoroughly later!

Doesn't matter what Walmart.com says, if your local store has them in stock, they are marked down.

I just back from the local Walmart. They had marked down their 3DS to $170 already. Bought one and will register the system tonight so I get the free games.

The promotion is meant for those who spent more $$ and are now realizing that if they had waited the price drop would have meant a savings of $80.

So, Nintendo is being extra nice and allowing those to paid $80 more to get free games to make up the difference.

It is not intended as a "buy for $170 AND get the promotion" deal.

FYI-Target also has the price drop. DD has been saving her money for a new DSI XL, so I went to look for one for her birthday next month, and I noticed the price drop on the 3DS. Hmm, what to do now. It's hard to pass up 20 free games.

We purchased the 3ds on the day it was released for my son's April 3 birthday. I am so glad you posted this information regarding free games because we did pay the premium price and are excited about getting something for it. My son just registered his 3ds for the ambassador program.

Thanks OP! Found one & we'll be setting it up tonight. Other than a few very inexpensive items I found & stocking stuffers this will be our sons only Christmas gift from us (which is fine by him). Anything I can do to sweeten this for him is a bonus.

DS has been wanting a 3DS for a while now (especially when he heard Ocarina of Time was released on 3DS). About a week and a half ago, he learned from the great guys at GameStop that the price drop was coming on the 12th. DS went into hyper mode and has been counting his money almost daily since! I think he has about $100 so far.

Maybe I'll head over to Target and/or Walmart and pick one up for him tonight. He can either pay me back as he gets the $$ or give me what he has saved and the balance can be a Christmas present. :) Christmas in August!

This is a great deal - thanks for posting!!

Maybe I should have waited a day or two. I just got a 3DS on Monday, as I thought some of the ambassador program games sounded neat. Now I find out the price was lowered early. Anyone know if Target gives a price adjustment for the 3DS? The policy I see online makes it look that way:
Target Stores Price Adjustment Policy
• If Target advertises a lower price either the same week or the week following your purchase, bring in your original sales receipt to Guest Services for an adjustment.
• Exclusions: Price adjustments are not made for clearance prices or Target.com prices.

I'm pretty sure you can. Since the price is marked down in the computer, I think all you need to do is bring in your receipt and they'll do the adjustment as long as it's within 14 days. At the very least you can buy a new one and return it with your old receipt.

I had to run by Target today to pick something up, so on a whim I went by the videogames, and they had the 3ds in stock for 170, so I bought it (I was the first one to buy it at that price, I guess word hadn't gotten out yet) and I'm setting it up now. This is a gift for ds when he learns how to read. :) That sounds a bit counter intuitive, but we have our reasons.

Thanks so much OP! I was planning on getting DS10 one for Christmas after the price drop, even though I knew he really wanted the exclusive games (I just couldn't justify paying that much for it.) I had to go to 2 walmarts but I did find one tonight, so now he gets the best of both worlds, and I'm through with his big gift for Christmas!

One question though: I register it on club.nintendo.com now, but the games are not available now, is that right? I guess they'll send an email or something when we will be able to download them?

Thanks again!

I honestly wasn't planning to try and get both the cheaper price and ambassador program games when I bought my 3DS, but since the price was lowered early at Target I think I may try and get the price reduction. Even if I wait until new ads come out it still doesn't really feel like cheating since I could go out tomorrow and probably find one for $170.
I wonder if retailers or Nintendo thought about people buying a 3DS and then trying for a price reduction after getting into the ambassador program.

My Walmart had the units on the shelf yesterday.

Are all the games on the 3ds downloadable games or will there still be little game cartridges that you put in the machine? If you download the games, are they always available on the system? Is there a limit to how many it can hold?
