Has anyone eaten at the Nine Dragons with a shrimp allergy? My wife really wants to eat there but she is very allergic to shrimp. We have to be careful of cross contamination, ie chicken being cooked in same oil as shrimp, or something being cooked in a wok that just had shrimp in it because they do not scrub the wok each time, some water goes in it gets brushed down them dumped but that is it.

I will say that it is not a life or death allergy but it does mean being very stomach sick for 1 to 2 days and she would be leaving the room so we do not want to take a chance.

I called and the person I talked to at first sounded unsure but then said " I think she will be ok" Not very reasurring to me.

Thanks in advance Dave

My sister has pretty serious shellfish allergies and will not eat Chinese at any restaurant because of her concerns about allergic reaction. Seeing that you will be on vacation and are out to have a great time, I'd avoid Nine Dragons for 3 reasons. First, the restaurant is not like your neighborhood joint at home, where you know how they prepare your food and they know you, so there is little chance of an allergy attack. Second, why chance it and even remotely give your allergies the opportunity to ruin your Disney vacation? And finally, the food at Nine Dragons just isn't that great. I've had much, much better takeout here at home than the meals I've had at Nine Dragons!!

I have a sister who has life-threatening allergies to shellfish. She will not eat in a Chinese restaurant at all. The chances of getting cross-contamination are pretty high, given the methods of cooking. No way would i bet my vacation on it.

I do not know the restaurants at WDW but as a fellow sufferer I can offer this advice : I am allergic to shellfish and only eat at Asian restaurants that I know & can trust that take the "cross-contamination" thing seriously. A lot of them do not understand. If in doubt...leave it out!

That was my thought also but I wanted to check since she has really wanted to eat there for a long time

Thanks again Dave

According to my allergist (very prominent Boston physician), shrimp is actually more allergenic while being cooked as much of the protein is emitted in the steam, therefore just being at a restaraunt where someone orders a 'sizzling' shrimp platter or similar can be hazardous. I would avoid it. I avoid similar restaurants with my shellfish allergic daughter for that very reason. At disney we avoid Asian restaurants, Ohanas and Boma for that reason and the large amount of nut containing dishes.

Good luck!

Ohana's is a place we trust with her allergy, we have been twice this past year and it has been great. Chef Peter came to our table and we let him know what the allergy was and he took care of it from there. And just for the record they no longer cook the shrimp on the fire pit, they cook it seperately out back. He even made up as couple of things that was not on the menu for her. He made a Hawaiian flat bread for her that was killer,

We think my wifes allergy is with the iodine at least that is what she thinks and I don't agrue with her for three reasons

1) It is her allergy
2) She is a chemist and toxicologist by shcooled and practicing.
3) see number 2 she always reminds me that she can kill me in my sleep
without leaving a mark :rotfl: :rotfl:

No I am not afraid of my wife but I do have a healty repect for her :rotfl2:
